School Board Filing Begins Dec. 5

ENID, OK - Candidates for the Board of Education in 9 Garfield County school districts will file Declarations of Candidacy beginning 8 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2022.

Coulten Cue, Secretary of the Garfield County Election Board, said Declaration of Candidacy forms must be completed and submitted to the County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2022. when the filing period ends. Cue reminds voters that Contests of Candidacy must be filed no later than Friday, December 9, 2022 and may only be filed by another candidate for that office. Contests against unopposed candidates may be filed by contacting the County Election Board.

If more than two candidates file for the same vacant Board of Education position, a Primary Election will be held Tuesday, February 14, 2023. If one candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, that candidate will be named the elected official. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will vie for the vacant position during the Board of Education General Election, April 4, 2023. If only two candidates file for the same vacant Board of Education position, those two candidates’ names will appear on the General Election ballot in April.

Declarations of Candidacy will be accepted for the following offices:

Chisholm Public Schools, Garber Public Schools, Waukomis Public Schools, Pioneer – Pleasant Vale Public Schools, Enid Public Schools, Covington- Douglas Public Schools, Drummond Public Schools, Kremlin-Hillsdale Public Schools and Autry Technology Center.

Declaration of Candidacy forms can be downloaded from the State Election Board website at oklahoma.gov/elections or by contacting your County Election Board office at (PHONE NUMBER) or (EMAIL ADDRESS).

The Garfield County Election Board is located at 903 Failing Ave and is open from 9:00a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Enid Board Office #3 Open

Enid Public Schools Board of Education is looking to fill the vacant seat of Office #3.

Previously held by Frank Nelson, the position would be held through April 2024 and would file in December 2023 to be on the ballot for re-election in February and/or April of 2024. The board typically meets on the third Monday of every month, as well as special meetings as needed.

Qualifications for the position include:

* Must have lived within the district for at least six months prior to the first day of the filing period.

* Must have been a registered voter with the county election board at an address located within the geographical boundaries of the district for at least sixth months prior to the first day of the filing period.

* Must have a high school diploma or certificate of high school equivalency.

* Special regulations apply to those who have been convicted or pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor involving embezzlement or a felony. Fifteen years must have passed since the completion of the related sentence. Individuals are not eligible to run during a pending appeal of such conviction or plea.

* Cannot have a relative within the second degree currently employed by the district, including a candidate’s spouse, child, parent, grandchild, grandparent, brother, sister, spouse’s child, spouse’s grandchild, spouse’s brother, spouse’s sister, spouse’s grandparent, grandchild’s spouse, parent’s spouse and child’s spouse.

Once appointed, members of the Board of Education are required to complete – within 15 months of appointment – at least 12 hours of instruction on education issues, including school finance, Oklahoma education laws, school board-related ethics, duties, and responsibilities.
