Rue21 Closing in Enid

ENID, OK - Fashion retailer Rue21 celebrated the date of November 14th, 2013 as the opening of their new store in Enid.  Officials from Rue21 were extremely excited about Enid being the location for the 1,000th store. Today, the store has signs in its windows saying they are closing the store. They have also confirmed the closing on their Facebook page.

Reuters reports Rue21 is planning to file for bankruptcy as early as this month. The company has not publicly confirmed those reports. The Pennsylvania company operates more than 1,000 stores in shopping malls, outlets and strip centers in 48 states.

Several retailers have sought bankruptcy protection as more shoppers spend money online. More than 10 percent of U.S. retail space, or nearly 1 billion square feet, may need to be closed, converted to other uses or renegotiated for lower rent in coming years, according to data provided to Bloomberg by CoStar Group.
