Robbery Suspect Shot & Killed Named

ENID, OK - The Enid Police Department have identified the suspected armed robber shot by officers after pointing a weapon at them on Thursday. He is identified as 19-year-old Joey Leon Nelson.

At 10:22AM on Thursday, September 27th, 2018 an armed robbery occurred at the Famous Footwear retail store, 4408 W. Owen K. Garriott Rd in Enid. Descriptions of the suspect and vehicle were quickly obtained and officers learned that the suspect was armed with a handgun and a knife. Soon after, officers located the suspect vehicle driving near Rupe and Hayes.

Officers attempted stop the vehicle but it failed to yield. The suspect led officers through several south side neighborhoods before coming to a stop near the intersection of Frantz and Washington. The suspect exited the car brandishing a weapon. He ignored numerous commands to drop the weapon before pointing it directly at the officers. The officers shot the suspect and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Enid Police Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard practice, while the investigation is conducted. No officers or citizens were injured during the incident. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending a report from the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office.
