Here are a few tips for staying warm at home. Don't forget to unhook your hoses outside!
-
1. Wear layers. Layers of lightweight clothing will keep you warm. Watch TV under a blanket. Gloves, scarves, socks and a hat will help prevent losing body heat as well.
-
2. Avoid frozen pipes. Let your faucets drip, to prevent  pipes from freezing. Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
-
3. Turn on ceiling fans. Warm air rises to the ceiling. Run your fan on its lowest setting in a clockwise direction to push the warm air back down to where you can feel it.
-
4. Block drafts under doors. Keep heat in and cold out by sliding towels or blankets under your doors. Shut doors to rooms you do not use unless they have water pipes in them.
-
5. Use your windows. Close your curtains at night to help block cold air. Open curtains during the day to let warm sunshine in.
-
6. Bake. Need to make cookies? Using your oven heats up the whole house. You'll feel even cozier if you invite friends—and all their body heat—over to eat the cookies.
-
7. Protect your pets. Do not leaves pets outside in freezing temperatures. Check their water bowls and replace any frozen ice with fresh water.
-
8. Stay dry. Wet clothing chills the body rapidly. Remove outer layers of clothing or open your coat if you are sweating.
-
9. Keep active. Light exercise will help warm you by generating body heat. Even doing chores around the house can help warm you up.
-
10. Be prepared. Stock food that needs no cooking or refrigeration and store water in clean containers. Make sure your cell phone is always charged.
-
11. Drink warm beverages. Drinks that are warm will help warm you from the inside.
-
12. Build a fire. If you have a fireplace, light it and spend time near it. Do not let it burn after you go to bed or leave it unattended.
-
13. Build a blanket fort. If the kids are cold, help them build a blanket for out of heavy blankets. Do not put a heater in a blanket fort.
-
14. Cuddle. If there are more than one of you, cuddle next to somebody while you watch TV or sleep. Your body heat will keep each other warm.
-
15. Use your laptop. Most laptops heat up when they are being used. Set yours on your lap and soak up the heat it is giving off.
