Parenting Again Support Group for Grandparents

ENID, OK - Are you a grandparent raising your grandchild? Do you struggle with emotional support and social acceptance? A new group has been formed to support grandparents who have taken on the role of parenting their grandchildren.

In the last 30 years, there has been a significant increase in the number of grandparent-headed families. Census data indicate that in the United States there are approximately 2.4 million grandparents raising 4.5 million children. Custodial grandparenting occurs when a grandparent assumes responsibility for a grandchild because the grandchild’s parents cannot or choose not to care for the child.

Dana Bickford invites you to Parenting Again, a support group helping grandparents connect with other grandparents raising grandchildren and helpful resources. Bickford was 52 when she began raising her 12 month old grandson Jaden. She eventually filed for and received legal guardianship of Jaden. When you are raising grandchildren, you may feel overcome with emotions. You may feel grief, sadness, and a sense of loss and disappointment that your child wasn't able to raise his/her children. Or you may feel angry or resentful about having to take on this role. One way to make the task easier is to connect with other grandparents in the same situation.
