Reminder - the 4th season of 'The Locator' premieres March 3rd!! 10 PM (That's a Wednesday) Wednesday, December 02, 2009Wednesday, May 09, 2007Meadowlake Park Tornado!![]() ![]() Labels: enid, meadowlake, tornado Wednesday, May 02, 2007Tuesday, April 24, 2007Enid Bridge Update![]() The debris from the Randolph bridge collapse has been removed and now everyone is waiting. Traffic has become a big headache and the city is trying to keep commuters from using residential streets to get around the mess. The loss of the Randolph bridge has been declared an emergency by the city commission. There will be an attempt to have a replacement bridge built by the start of school in the fall. In order to speed up the process the commissioners have waived the normal bidding process on the project. The emergency declaration will save the city time on taking bids but will still allow the city a right to reject bids if they are higher than estimated. Estimates on fixing the bridge have been priced at $250,000 for a two-lane bridge and $1 million to $1.5 million for a four-lane bridge. Construction on the bridge could take about 120 days. In other bridge news, a review of city bridges found only six structures in the city capable of supporting its heaviest firefighting equipment. The city has started a structural evaluation of about 76 bridges in Enid and fire officials have asked the city to post weight limits on all bridges, regardless of their capacity. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 1.6 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA sent a letter to Enid Mayor Ernie Currier and the City Council urging the city to enact legislation that would ban the use of bullhooks, electric prods, and other devices which they believe are commonly used to inflict pain on elephants. PETA's request comes in light of Carson & Barnes Circus' scheduled April 21-22 visit to Enid. PETA points out that similar legislation is already pending in Chicago and has requested to meet with Mayor Currier and the City Council to discuss making this weekend's Carson & Barnes performances the last time that these instruments are used against elephants in Enid. PETA is well known for having famous women pose nude for ads against fur. The campaigns show naked women with captions saying "I'd rather go naked than wear fur."This poster shows intellectual icon Tommy Lee posing for a PETA ad. Man, do I hope that is not a leather skin hat he's wearing. Although the care and concern for animals is a noble cause, PETA has taken this concern a bit far and would like to force you to eat nothing but beans and greens; and wear nothing but cotton, rayon, and rubber. They want to ban hunting, fishing, zoos, rodeos, and circuses. Some want to permanently end Kosher slaughter. They would like to do away with all pets and they even want to outlaw the use of animals in the search for cures for AIDS, Parkinson's Disease, and cancer. And a growing number take the law into their own hands, crossing the line from peaceful protest to violent crime. Will PETA succeed in Enid? Who knows. While we're waiting to see we might as well buy some popcorn, find our seats and get ready for the show!! Tickets are available now for Carson & Barnes Circus that will be April 21-22 at Oakwood Mall. Show times are 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. April 21 and 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. April 22. The Enid Noon AMBUCS is hosting this show, with proceeds benefiting Enid youth. Denny Price Family YMCA’s Back-a-Youth program, Boy Scouts of America and Hedges Regional Speech & Hearing Center will all receive funds from this event. The elephants mentioned above will be erecting the circus tent at 10 a.m. April 21 on the mall’s north parking lot. Tickets are $6 for children up to 11 and $12 for adults. They are available at Jumbo Foods locations, David Burrows Allstate Insurance, Rose Rock Bank, Vance Air Force Base and Oakwood Mall. Up in the Sky...![]() I took this full moon photo from my front yard in Enid, OK this month and posted it to help kick off a fun filled few weeks of star gazing. Get ready to see wonders that won't be seen again for years to come. Beginning December 10, planets Jupiter, Mercury and Mars will be visible to the naked eye until December 14. These three planets in conjunction can be seen early morning, 40 minutes before sunrise. While the phenomenon became visible from earth on Thursday, the conjunction will be within 1 degree circle on Sunday, which is very rare and occurs only once in 50 years. You will need to look towards the east and southeast direction close to the horizon at 5.50 am, 40 minutes before sunrise to spot Jupiter, Mercury and Mars. You can use the naked eye or binoculars to see this fun occurance. Also this month there will be meteor showers likely to occur through December 17. You should be able to see bright streaks of light zipping across the night sky. Away from city lights, you should be able to see these showers with the naked eye. On December 14, the Geminid meteor shower will be at its peak where more than 120 meteors are expected to be seen from night skies. Look towards the northeast and east from 10.30 pm onwards. Morning walkers can look towards the sky between the west and northwest direction from 4.00 am onwards. Bright streaks of light will be seen darting through the atmosphere. Happy Gazing!! |
