Kids Poster & Essay Contest

ENID, OK - The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission of Enid, Oklahoma, invites your students to join them in celebrating the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through their involvement in the annual poster and essay contest. It is hoped that through their participation in the contest and the celebration, students will become more aware of the principles Dr. King promoted during his life.

Please feel free to forward, print, and distribute this information to any interested party. Any child who is of school age may participate. If your child’s classroom teacher is not participating in the contest, your child is still eligible to participate. In the past they have had public and private schools, churches, home school children, community organizations, and after school programs participate. They have had parents work with their own children at home and submit a project as well.

The mission is to promote diversity and with that said, they encourage those with special needs to participate. Please indicate on the back of the child’s work if you would like their work to be judged with this in mind.

The theme this year is, “Continue the Dream and Come Together”. Essay emphasis—How can I bring my community closer to realizing Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream? Poster and essay contest entry requirements are listed on the attached flyer. This year the deadline will be Monday, January 9, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

MLK Commemorative March ---Saturday, January 14, 2017 @ 11:00 am, beginning @ the Central Fire Station, 410 W. Owen K. Garriott and ending at Grayson Missionary Baptist Church, 334 E. Owen K. Garriott.

Everyone is invited to attend the 2017 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, which will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017, at the Central National Bank Center Grand Ball Room, 301 S. Independence, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Poster and essay contest winners will receive recognition and prizes at the celebration. The community organization, school, or church with the most participants will also receive a trophy. We hope to involve as many students as possible in honoring Dr. King and his contributions to society. We thank you in advance for your support of this momentous occasion.

Contest Rules

Awards will be given to the top three posters & essays in each category. Posters & Essays must reflect the theme. The organizations with the most participants will also receive a trophy:

“Continue the Dream and Come Together”

  • Essays should be typed and should not exceed 500 words.
  • Posters may be no larger than 18 X 24 inches and no smaller than 8 1⁄2 x 11 inches.
  • Posters must be original. Posters must be drawn by the child. Coloring pages will not be accepted.
  • Student name, school/organization, teacher/sponsor and grade (indicate if child is special needs only if you would like the judges to know and take that into consideration) should be included on the back of each entry.

Contest is open to Pre-K through 12th Grade students. Judging categories are:

  • Pre-K and Kindergarten
  • 1st and 2nd Grade
  • 3rd and 4th Grade
  • 5th and 6th Grade
  • 7th and 8th Grade
  • 9th through 10th Grade
  • 11th through 12th Grade

Entries must be submitted at the City of Enid Administration Building CDBG office no later than January 9, 2017 by 5:00 p.m. A trophy will be given to the School, Church or Community Organization that has the most participation in the Poster & Essay Contest.

AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE MLK CELEBRATION on SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Central National Bank Center Grand Ball Room, 301 S. Independence, Enid, OK.
