Johnston Seed Turf Tips

With the winter season now upon us and spring only a few months away, now is the time to begin thinking about what you would want to apply for weed control in early spring.

To eliminate weeds from becoming an issue you will use, as it’s known in the industry, a pre-emergent. This form a chemical inhibits a particular plant process, based on the chemical used, during germination resulting in the seed dying out. You have a few options when it comes to pre-emergent selection. Some of the more common pre-emergents are Barricade (Prodiamine), Pendulum (Pendimethalin) and Surflan (Oryzalin). All of these are normally available in either a liquid or granular form, with granular being the more popular of the two. You will generally see 3-4 months of control from a pre-emergent and it may be necessary to make 2 applications starting in late February and again in late April.

When spraying in the spring, it is sometimes necessary to apply a post-emergent in order to eliminate weeds that are already present in the lawn. Depending on the type of grass you have in your lawn will determine the types of post emergent chemical you will want to use. Broadleaf weed killers, such as Trimec, are generally safe to spray year round except in temperatures over 80oF. For grassy type weeds, Round Up or a specialty chemical may need to be used. Be careful with these types of chemicals, if not applied correctly or applied at the wrong time of the year you can stunt the grass from greening up as quick in the fall and/or even kill the grass.
