Joan attended Stanford College of Nursing. She met the love of her life, Marvin Haltom in Nottingham, England at an Army Air Corp dance, just before the end of WWII. They were married on April 11, 1945 in Peterborough, England. Joan and Marvin welcomed their first born child, a daughter Phyllis Jean, on July 5, 1947. Together they farmed east of Waynoka and operated their dairy farm until 1956 when they moved to Enid. Joan was a homemaker and Marvin was self-employed. On December 1, 1958 they welcomed their second daughter, Kathy Lynn. Joan loved sewing, needlepoint, crocheting and was also an avid gardener who grew the most beautiful roses and African violets.
