Nursing Trivia The first nursing school in Enid was founded in 1907 in association with University Hospital. The staff of the newly formed Oklahoma Christian University (later renamed Phillips University) would lecture the students at the nursing school. The graduating nurses would then receive their diplomas as part of the graduation ceremony at the University. University Hospital continued until 1946 when it was purchased by St. Mary’s hospital. The nursing school of Bass Baptist Hospital started in 1914, when the hospital was called Enid General Hospital. This school lasted until September 1971 and graduated over 420 nurses from that program. St. Mary’s Hospital started as Spring’s Sanitarium in 1916. That same year, Spring’s Sanitarium also started a nursing school with 12 students of which three graduated in 1919. Pearl French is listed as the first graduate. This school continued until 1937 when the hospital became St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s ran their nursing school from 1937 to 1951 and from 1961 to 1971. In 1969, St. Mary’s and Bass Baptist hospitals made an arrangement with Phillips University to participate in a Baccalaureate nursing program to be operated by Phillips University. Like Bass Baptist, St. Mary’s graduated their last nursing class in 1971, bringing to an end a long tradition of nursing schools operated and administered by local hospitals.
