Helen was born in Independent Hill, Virginia, on January 16, 1944, to Lawrence Everett Runion and Mildred Ida Runion. She grew up in Virginia, living around all her family until she married Walter Chase in 1961 and they had three daughters. Being a military family, they lived in many places. Ultimately, the Air Force brought them to Enid in 1974. On December 31, 1977, she married Harold Dwane Johnson and gained two sons, raising them as her own. They made their home in Enid where Helen worked at Tinker Federal Credit Union and then at Dillards until her retirement in 2016.

Helen loved spending time with her family, reading, watching cooking shows and going to the casino. She and Hal loved OU football and they went all decked out to the games until her health prevented it. Helen would do anything in her power to help anybody, all you had to do was ask. She was the queen of making deviled eggs, homemade macaroni and cheese and hash brown casserole, just ask her grandchildren!!
