As they prepare to move to their new school next fall, Garfield Elementary students are hosting a special tribute for their current building, located at 900 E. Broadway.

Principal Kathy Edson and Garfield students will present “Farewell Old Friend” May 21 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. The come-and-go event will feature music by Garfield students on the front steps, tours of the building and refreshments. Renderings, photos and color boards of the new Garfield school will also be on display.

“This is an exciting time for our community,” Superintendent Shawn Hime said. “We hope Enid residents will join us for this event, and we extend a special invitation to former Garfield students, teachers, parents and friends.”

Garfield has been in its current location since 1919. Next year, students will move to their newly constructed building at the corner of 7th Street and Elm.

The new school, built for 650 students, will feature a first-class library, cafeteria and gymnasium, as well as the latest amenities for 21st-century learning.

A community open house will be hosted this summer at the new school.

Volunteers should bring work gloves and their own paint brushes. Lunch will be provided. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center is located at 507 S. 4th Street, Enid. For more information on Project Day, please contact Mike Caffey, Maintenance Director at 237-1907 x 228.

• Opening Weekend!! Enid Farmers Market begins the season from 8-11 am this Saturday at the train depot at Garriott and Grand.

Bring your lunch and join us at noon on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, in the Village Church for an interesting Brown Bag presentation on the history and use of Police Dogs in the Enid Police Department. Patrolman Ryan Fuxa and his K-9 partner will be on hand to share the story and demonstrate why and how dogs are used in police work.

This Brown Bag presentation proceeds the Heritage Center’s newest temporary exhibit, “Pioneer Pets,” opening May 25. “Pioneer Pets” is a Heritage Center internally produced exhibit showcasing over 30 photographs of Cherokee Strip settlers with their pets. The exhibit will be on display through July 29.

Brown Bag Lunch & Learn presentations are held the second Wednesday of each month and are free to the public.

There is a Ton of Fun going on around Enid, Oklahoma this weekend. We’ll try to list what we remember below:

First Friday:
Downtown will be alive with music, stores staying open late and great food.
• The new band “BACKSTAGE PASS” will be having its first gig. They will be in the breezeway just west of the Bike Shop. They start at 6 and then “CATFINK” plays (around 7:30).
• Live music by Billy Beck – For You from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
• Big Blue Dump Truck at Callahan’s Pub at 9pm

Starts at 9am today at Oakwood Mall
The event starts at 9 a.m. with the Super Fly check-in and open practice, followed at 10:30 a.m. by the Pro/Am Super Fly qualifier. At 12:30 p.m., the competition opens up to the community. Residents are invited to bring their dogs and have a friendly jumping competition with other dogs. The final event of the day is at 3 p.m., when Junior Flyers take the stage.

The competition picks up again at noon Saturday with the Super Fly check-in and Pro/Am and Junior Flyers qualifiers. At 1 p.m., the Pro/Am Super Fly qualifiers will compete, followed at 3 p.m. with the Super V Pro qualifiers. The final four finishers in this category will advance to the finals. A fun jump, if time permits, will round out the day at 4:30.

Sunday is the final qualifier of the Pro/Am Super Fly will be at 9 a.m. The Super Fly Pro and Amateur finals will follow from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the winners will be announced immediately following the competition.

• The Million Dollar Parade will be in downtown Enid at 10:30am Saturday.

• 3rd annual Tri-State Car Show will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and continue through 3 p.m. at Oakwood Mall.

• Grand Concert at 3 p.m. Saturday at Chisholm Trail Expo Center.

Fares from Enid to Okeene are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
Fares from Okeene to Ames are $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Ottaway Carnival is here! They are set up at the Oakwood Mall. They have 2 Tri-State matinee specials: $15 pay one price wristbands on Thurs from 11am-5pm and Fri from 11am-5pm.

They will also have $22 wristbands Wed 6-10pm, Thurs 6-10pm, Fri 6-11pm, Sat 11am-5pm, Sat 5pm-11pm, and Sun 1-5pm.
