The old and the new La Macarena are gone, as is the old Playa Azul. But! The new Playa Azul is now open where the old New La Macarena was on west Garriott. Got it. Pastimes is closing but not closing for good. They’ll reopen after the downtown construction has been completed but might not be the old Pastimes, rather a new Pastimes instead. There’s a new bakery in town called the Jubilee Bakery at 220 East Maple and also a new smoothie bar at 220 West Broadway called The Nutrition Nook. The Nook has replaced the new Trough, not the old Trough, which was there for just a short period of time. The new Italian place which replaced the old China place is now closed so don’t worry about that. Cafe on Broadway at 226 West Broadway is open even though I thought at one time it was closed.

Is everyone caught up now?

EPS Launching Free Mobile App

The latest Enid Public Schools information and news will soon be as close as your smartphone.

EPS officials announced today they are working with Oklahoma-based School Connect to launch a free mobile app for the district. The app will be available for download in both the Apple and Android app stores later this month.

School Connect specializes in the development of mobile applications for K-12 school systems and institutions. The company’s services are free to the school district, and there will be no download charges for mobile users.

Superintendent Shawn Hime said he believes the app will enhance school-to-parent and school-to-community communication, especially since users can subscribe to the school news and announcements they would like to receive.

“We’re living in a busy world. Parents, students, grandparents, and residents are always on the go, but they still want to keep in touch with school news, which we appreciate,” Hime said. “This app will give them a convenient way to stay informed. It’s free to the district and free to the user, but the benefits will be priceless.”

The app, financially supported by school-friendly sponsors, will feature:

● Push messaging from both the district and school-site levels,
● GPS mapping and navigation,
● Online gradebook access,
● Tap screens for email for district staff,
● Multiple language options, including Spanish,
● Lunch menus, athletic information, and much more.

Dr. Nick Migliorino, School Connect’s president, said the company is excited about working with Enid Public Schools and other districts to transform school communications.

“People rely on their mobile devices for everything – contact, news, messaging, scheduling – so schools serious about community engagement are serious about robust mobile platforms,” Migliorino said. “This makes the free School Connect app high value to its partners, and we are proud to partner with this local district. Together, we are taking school communication, transparency and accountability to a much higher level.”

Last Chance to See Field, Forest & Stream Exhibit
There are only two weeks left to see the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center’s temporary exhibit, Field, Forest & Stream celebrating the Oklahoma outdoors. The exhibit closes on Sunday, January 15, 2012. The exhibit was developed by the Oklahoma History Center and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. The exhibit includes historical artifacts, dynamic graphics, audio-visual elements, and fun, hands-on interactive features.

Three main topic sections are represented in the exhibit; hunting, fishing and camping. A special feature of the exhibit for Northwest Oklahoma is the addition of historical material on the Grand National Quail Hunt, held every November in Enid. The Grand National started in 1967 and has grown into the leading invitational celebrity hunting event in the United States.

At the turn of the nineteenth century, rivers and prairie streams were the highways upon which the early explorers and settlers depended as they crossed the wilds of Indian Territory. Later, as some of these waterways were dammed to create the large lakes we know today, sporting opportunities increased for all Oklahomans.
Visitors will learn about the development of Oklahoma’s national forests, game management areas, wildlife refuges, preserves, and state parks. Since the Territorial Legislature of the 1890s enacted the first hunting laws it has been a long road to recovery for Oklahoma’s wildlife. Visitors will experience this dramatic comeback and how Oklahomans past and present have enjoyed this valuable resource. Guests can choose between a number of outdoor sport and conservation activities with a history lesson or two thrown in.

The camp section of the exhibit explores the cultural history behind this popular form of outdoor recreation. See and experience examples of vintage camping equipment, camping methods, and Oklahoma recipes from over the years.

For more information on the exhibit, please contact the Heritage Center at 580-237-1907 or visit the website, www.csrhc.org.
