Welcome to our Enid restaurant reviews section! For diners, we want to help you decide where to eat out, and to let our experience and feedback help you to research local restaurants. Our goals are to:

To be fair and honest

To understand and illuminate the cuisine about which we are writing

To look beyond specific dishes and experiences to capture the whole of a restaurant and its intentions

Our rating system:

Five Smiles: (Extraordinary) A one-of-a-kind experience that sets the local standard.

Four Smiles: (Excellent) Memorable, high-quality food, service or concept.

Three Smiles: (Good) Solid example of a good restaurant experience, food or service.

Two Smiles: (Fair) Just OK. Not worth rushing back to, but has something worth recommending.

One Smile: (Poor) Below-average rating. Would need a second look.

OUR MOST CURRENT RESTAURANT REVIEW:

Octavios Taquiera

226 W. Broadway • (580) 237-5256

(May 17, 2013) Many of you know Octavios Taquiera has moved to a new location at the corner of Broadway and Washington. Open Tuesday thru Sunday 11am to 7pm, Octavios offers; tacos, burritos, quesadillas and tortas. This is my first time trying Octavios. My first observations; It is a clean restaurant, you order at one side of the counter and when your number is called you pick your order up at the other end of the counter. The menu board is posted above the counter. I do like that they have the different types of tacos in Spanish and in English so you know what you are ordering. On this visit I tried the Special. The special is not on the menu board but a plated version is on the counter. The special is three tacos of your choice, rice and beans. I had the asada tacos. I tried the hot tacos instead of the mild tacos. Note to yourself “hot” is “hot” but I noticed plenty of people piling on more spices. When you pickup your order you will be asked if you would like a grilled jalapeno pepper, it is good and if you enjoy spicy food you will enjoy the extra kick. There is a small salsa bar with cut lime and two types of sauces. So here are my thoughts on Octavios Taquiera;

There were a lot of people there, some I knew, some I didn’t. Since I hadn’t been there I asked patrons what they liked and how to order. Everyone I talked to was eager to share what their favorite menu items were and why. I give Octavios melting pot factor .

I really liked my tacos, rice and beans. The beans weren’t all smooshed up. Don’t get me wrong, I like refried beans and on this visit I liked the beans I had. Squeeze a little lime on the asada taco, it gives it a little fun. I give the quality of food and for the price as it relates to quantity.

The atmosphere is diner in the front and nicer diner in the larger room to the side. There are some interesting wood and leather chairs that separates Octavios from many other dine ins. I liked the atmosphere. When they are busy you will want to situate yourself so you are able to pickup your order and make it thru the line of people waiting to order. It can be crowded at times, I like that, it is good to enjoy the hustle and bustle of a happy crowd. I give the atmosphere 1/2.

I had watermelon juice with my meal. There is also rice water, bottled water and bottled pop. Try the watermelon juice or the rice water. It’s sweet, refreshing and a real treat. Nothing like it in town. I’m an ice tea girl and there wasn’t any, still I was really happy with the juice option. Yum. I give the drink selections .

I give the watermelon juice and rice water . You have to try this.

I’m glad Octavios Taquiera moved to a larger location. The casual feel and terrific food makes it a must try in Enid

Buying medications for many families has become a luxury. The high cost of life saving prescriptions has put a strain on the budgets of middle and lower income Americans. Many people today will even go without their medications just so they can pay their bills.

Help is now available for Oklahomans who cannot afford the high cost of their prescription medications with a new service called RX for Oklahoma. The RX for Oklahoma prescription assistance program helps the uninsured or under insured access pharmaceutical company programs that offer reduced cost or free medications. RX for Oklahoma staff from across the region will be available to help area residents access the free program Friday May 17th from 8-5pm and Saturday May 18th from 10am to 2pm at The Non-Profit Center downtown located at 114 S. Independence. Please take a valid form of ID, proof of income, insurance cards, and/or proof of public assistance. Theses items will help the staff better assist you.

RX for Oklahoma is a free service funded by the state and is offered by three different community action offices. Region 1 services Northwest Oklahoma including the panhandle. Community Development Support Association (CDSA) and Opportunities INC. are the agencies that service the 16 county region and 3 offices. Those counties include: Garfield, Grant, Noble, Kay, Kingfisher, Blaine, Major, Alfalfa, Woods, Dewey, Woodward, Harper, Ellis, Beaver, Texas, and Cimarron.

Statistics show the uninsured and under insured population falls between 15,000 – 25,000 in our region alone. “There are many Oklahomans that are going without their life saving medications because they don’t realize help is available,” said Angelica Berry, RX for Oklahoma Region 1 Coordinator for CDSA. “Our staff provides assistance in completing prescription assistance applications from the proper pharmaceutical company with the proper documentation. This process takes about a month and only long-term maintenance medications qualify,” stated Berry.

Nearly 1700 prescriptions worth $1 million dollars were provided to Oklahomans in the 16 county region. “We have anywhere from 15,000 to 25,000 people that use our assistance, yet we only served 1700 claims. This tells me that we need to spread the word about our program and help improve the quality of people’s lives in our region,” said Berry.

This program helps save Oklahomans from the stress of how they’ll pay for their needed medications. Assistance through RX for Oklahoma is available Monday – Friday from 7am to 5pm. The statewide toll-free number is 1-877-RX4OKLA. The website is www.rx4okla.com.

If you have more questions about this event contact Angelica Berry at 580-242-7928 or angelica.berry@cdasok.org.

Beginning Wednesday, May 1, Enid Public Transportation Authority will shut down operations between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. This time period will be used by EPTA staff for training and administrative meetings.
EPTA General Manager James Neal said these brief interruptions to transit service are necessary to improve EPTA operations. “We are working at EPTA to provide more effective and efficient transit service to the citizens of Enid,” Neal said. “In order to accomplish this service enhancement, the EPTA staff need a dedicated block of time in which we can train and conduct administrative meetings.” Neal said the affected time blocks were selected because they coincide with one of the lowest periods of demand for transit services during the work week. “We ask that people who utilize transit service schedule their trips and appointments around the EPTA staff meetings on the first and third Wednesdays of the month,” Neal said. “We appreciate your cooperation, and we look forward to serving you in the future.”

City of Enid Engineering officials have reported the Wednesday tie in of a new 20” water line at U.S. 412 and 54th Street has been successfully completed by Nowak Construction. Officials also reported the tie in effort was completed in record time. At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, City of Enid crews started the process of re-pressurizing the existing 20” line that runs form US 412 and 54th Street, then southeast to 78th Street. According to Robert Hitt, Director of Engineering Services from the City of Enid, “Over the next three weeks the new line will be dis-infected, pressured, existing services moved from the old to new line. At that time, the 40 year old line will be de-watered and taken out of service, and full pressure and water supply will be restored.”

Hitt also stated, “This very successful conclusion to an emergency need has been accomplished through the diligent work of Nowak Construction, City of Enid Water Department employees and the great cooperation of the abutting customers, including land owners for allowing for the quick installation.”

According to City of Enid Engineering Management, one of the final steps in replacing the 20 inch water line located on the east side of our community will be to tie in the new 20 inch water line to existing pipe to allow for rinsing and pressure testing.

Robert Hitt, Director of Engineering for the City of Enid said, “To tie the new line in, we will need to take the existing water line down starting Wednesday morning. The water line is expected to be down for 12 to 18 hours. This includes time to drain the line, install the new valves and water line, and re-pressurize the existing line to service pressures.”

City officials also stated that the water department will notify the affected customers and Koch Industries officials have been notified. The new 20 inch water line is located on the south side of Highway 412 and goes from 54th street to Kremlin street and then south along the railroad easement to 78th street.

This emergency project will replace 2.5 miles of 40 year old, 20 inch water line with new system and allow for full pressure service to the area.

by Curtis D. Tucker

Many people may not be aware of the fact that Enid no longer has dirt track racing out at the Enid Speedway. The track currently does not have a promoter which handles most all aspects of running the races, attracting drivers and marketing to the fans. The Enid Speedway is located at the Garfield County Fairgrounds in the Garfield County Memorial Stadium.

The track is overseen by the Fairgrounds Trust Authority and managers of the fairgrounds. Terms of the trust prevent the track from legally signing any promoter to a contract for more than two years.

Ed Beckley, who operated dirt car tracks in Dodge City, Kan., and Liberal, Kan., was the last promoter. Beckley cited small car counts and lagging attendance as the reason he was forced to pull out of a deal he had with the Garfield County Fair Board in 2011. The last race reportedly lost $7,000.

The Enid Speedway track opened in August of 1948 and was once known as Thunderbird Speedway. The track is a 3/8 mile high banked dirt oval. Over the decades the track has changed names and promoters many times. The stadium is now closed.

Currently Enid is going through somewhat of a renaissance with the renovation of Conventional Hall, the creation of the Enid Event Center, the revival of the Esquire Movie Theater, new emphasis on local parks, rebuilding of the Meadowlake rides, renewed interest in Tri-State and the rebuilding of almost every school in town.

Enid seems to be yearning for many of the things that made living here great in the 60′s and 70′s. Part of that legacy includes auto racing at the Enid Speedway. Most of the long time local residents can remember hearing the car races every Saturday night during racing season. The engine sounds could be heard in practically every corner of town and the bright speedway lights could be seen for miles.

Today, there are a couple of people willing to step up and bring dirt track racing back to Enid. The speedway needs a promoter and there is one young man that may be the perfect candidate for the position. His name is Justin Bingham, a single 35 year old US ARMY Non Commissioned Officer veteran with some very lofty goals. He currently owns Enid’s hottest delivery service, Jus 10 Time, located at 2811 W. Owen K. Garriott.

Bingham served three overseas tours in the war zone of Iraq. Unfortunately he was badly injured when hit by two insurgent vehicles while on patrol North of Baghdad. The US Army medically retired Bingham due to his injuries and ended his career early with 11 years of pure Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.

Bingham moved back to Enid to be with his family. Since his return, the Enid Speedway has lacked stability and joined Tulsa, OK and OKC, OK in shutting down their tracks. His goal is to bring back racing in addition to many other popular activities related to the industry.

There are currently plans to make major changes to the way the track has operated in the past. This includes the pits, concessions, and grandstands. Bingham is looking to make the speedway fun and exciting while adding at least two new classes to the schedule. He currently has $20,000 put aside to invest in the track. He still needs another $80,000 before the doors can open.

Investors are currently being sought with no amount given being too small or too big. Regardless of the amount sponsored, raised, or donated, these funds will go directly to opening the track. Sponsorship packages are also available. Sponsors will have their name on the speedway walls, names on banners in the stands, the parking lot area and on track equipment. These sponsors will also receive free event tickets, free drinks and food specials.

With a few major sponsors there could be enough support to show the fairground authority that the Enid Speedway should reopen. If you have questions, suggestions or would like to contribute, please do not hesitate to call Jus 10 Time. (580) 540-4260 / (580) 747-1360.

Fans of auto racing and the Enid Speedway are doing what they can to bring racing back to Enid. They have created a Facebook page to keep everyone updated on the latest news. Please visit the Keep Enid Speedway Kickin page today.

Bringing auto racing back to Enid could be another feather in our cap. Enid is definitely on the move and could easily become the #1 destination spot in all of northern Oklahoma. Let’s take advantage of our current growth, influx of oilfield workers and variety of weekend activities. Race fans need to unite and show their support for the race track.

An event has already been created to get the ball rolling on bringing back the speedway. Keep Enid Speedway Kickin is presenting their 1st Annual Car Show. All race cars, mud trucks, motorcycles, rock crawlers and hot rods are welcome. The event will take place Sunday, May 19th in front of the Enid Speedway beginning at 12:00pm. Food will be provided by the BBQ Joint from Pond Creek. There will also be Monster Truck rides from Sudden Death, a dunk tank, car bash, motorcycle games and other surprises. Call 747-4848 with questions.

EPTA – Temporary Change in Service

ENID, OK (May 9, 2013) –

Beginning Monday, May 20th Enid Public Transportation Authority will temporarily transition its fixed routes to an on-call demand response system. The change in service will affect all three of the EPTA fixed routes – Blue Bird, Black Bird and Red Bird. The change in service will not affect current EPTA paratransit, or curb-to-curb, riders. EPTA General Manager James Neal said the change in service along the fixed routes is necessary due to budget shortfalls.

“EPTA, like most transit systems in the country, has seen a drastic decrease in its state and federal grant funding over the last year,” Neal said. “This situation is projected to worsen in the 2013-2014 fiscal year, demanding that we find ways to operate more efficiently with our available resources.”

Once the change in service takes effect on May 20th buses will respond to fixed route bus stops only when requested in advance. This service will still pick up from, and deliver to, designated bus stops along the EPTA fixed routes, but riders will have to call EPTA dispatch at (580) 233-RIDE in order to arrange a pickup at one of the fixed route bus stops. EPTA Dispatch will be available to dispatch buses to fixed route stops between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

In order to schedule a pickup at a fixed route bus stop during these hours it is recommended riders call at least 1 hour before their desired pickup time. Riders who require service along the fixed route between 6-8 a.m. or 5-7 p.m. will have to call by 4:30 p.m. the previous day to pre-schedule those rides. On-call response service to the fixed route stops will be for the fares currently charged along the fixed route, available on the City of Enid website at www.enid.org.

Neal said the changes to the fixed route system are temporary, and are meant to sustain EPTA service to the public while more comprehensive system changes are developed. “EPTA is working on a total overhaul of Enid’s public transit service,” Neal said. “The end result of this process will be a leaner, more efficient system that provides more service to the public within the constraints of our current budget. We appreciate the public’s patience and input as we continue through that process.”

Neal said a definite timeline for full implementation of a redesigned transit system has not yet been determined.
