ENID, OK - Cruising the strip was something many of us looked forward to each and every weekend back in the day. Hot summer evenings driving up and down Van Buren in a circuit that took us from the north end to the south end and back again. Each generation had its own turn around spot and favorite parking area.
This was definitely a summer phenomenon that lasted from the 50's through the 80's. Somewhere in the 90's cruising stopped and it is nothing but a fading memory in most places these days. Van Buren a.k.a VB was the place where you could find many the teens of Enid, especially those that had a car to show off. It was the place to find new friends and to hang out with your buddies.
On Friday, cruise from 7:00pm-11:30pm and stop by the Chisholm Trail Professional Building next to McDonald's and pre-register for the Car Show and buy a shirt.
Attend the Car Show Saturday, June 17, 2023 from 4-7pm at the Chisholm Trail Professional Building, 102 S Van Buren. Saturday night cruise from 7:00pm-11:30pm.
History of the Cruise
Darla Dalton Robbins started it all in 2010 with a Facebook Page. She was a cruiser from the 80's. She is a graduate of Chisholm High Class of '89. In early 2010 she set up a Facebook page to find others that had cruised Van Buren. In a short time the page had about 700 members and quickly grew to over 3,000 members.
Darla contacted the police department, with the belief that cruising had become illegal. She found that it had not. That June of 2010 over Father's Day weekend they had a few thousand people of all ages come out in vehicles of all makes and models to relive their days of cruisin' VB. It was such a hit that it has now become an annual Father's Day weekend event.
All cars are invited to cruise! Everyone is invited to sit along Van Buren and watch! Many Enid residents just pull up a lawn chair and watch the cruise from parks, parking lots and yards. Please get permission before staking a claim on private property.
