EPS Adopts New School Readiness Program

ENID, OK - Enid Public Schools is pleased to announce the adoption of Early Birds, an Oklahoma school readiness program.
-
Early Birds will provide Enid families with 90-minute adult education classes offered three times a year. The classes, expected to begin by November, will assist parents with their efforts to ensure their children, ages birth to five, are ready to be successful in school.
-
“According to research, students who enter school prepared and ready for kindergarten are four times less likely to drop out of high school,” said Randy Rader, EPS Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education. “Placing an emphasis on learning starting from birth helps families establish strong educational expectations for their children. We look forward to supporting families in their efforts.”
-
The Early Birds program will deliver five core areas of adult education: developmental milestones, parent-child activities, everyday learning, purposeful parenting, and family health and wellness. Parents will receive activities, educational toys, and books to stimulate their child’s development and learning.
-
The program, which is part of the broader literacy initiative #EnidReads, is funded by the Oklahoma Striving Reader’s Grant, awarded to EPS in the spring of 2017. The three-year grant specifically targets Garfield Elementary School, Adams Elementary School, Coolidge Elementary School and Carver Early Childhood Center.
-
Additionally, the Oklahoma Striving Reader’s Grant will fund classroom libraries and in-home literacy opportunities to stimulate reading interest for parents of students.
-
“For now, the program is designed to impact four schools; however, we are confident that we will be able to build a self-sustaining program for all EPS elementary schools by the end of the grant period,” Rader said. “We know that early years are the most important learning years, and we want all students to have the foundation they need to make their dreams come true in the future.”
