VINTAGE PICTURES OF DOWNTOWN ENID

This is a great old postcard showing The First National Bank Building during its glory days. The building still stands as a business building today on the corner of Grand and Randolph.

This is an old post card of the Kress building on the corner of Main and Independence. The building is now part of the Cherokee Strip Conference Center. The red building in the back is the old fire station.

Renovation on the building at Grand and Broadway has uncovered some vintage signs from one of the past occupants. The building on the southeast corner of the intersection was once the Layfield Shoe Mart. It is currently a mattress store (2009).

The court house is sitting where Broadway is now.

This is a great photo of the old court house when it sat in the middle of Broadway. The picture was taken from the middle of Broadway, in front of what would be the Broadway Tower, looking west. The building on the right is the Stephenson Building once located on the corner of Broadway and Grand.
Enid's first courthouse opened on April 1, 1896. It consisted of a two story brick building, which the County soon outgrew. Enid's second courthouse was built by O.A. Campbell of Oklahoma City in 1907 from Oklahoma granite and Indiana stone. The building was located in the center of Broadway, surrounded by sidewalks, and fully landscaped. Its south side was located where the front of the Enid Post Office is now. (Enid’s post office used to be on where the public library is located now, and Enid's public library was a Carnegie building located at 402 North Independence. On January 29, 1931, a fire broke out in the jail, then located on the roof, which quickly spread to the rest of the building. All prisoners were safely evacuated, and county records were rescued. From 1931 to 1936, the County operated out of an agricultural building, and later the Broadway Tower.

Looking North at the corner of Independence and Cherokee.
I think that building with the white side is Oklahoma Tire and Supply (OTASCO). Where that truck is parked would be where the old fire station used to be, in the back of the KRESS (which is now the conference center) building. In the upper right corner of the picture it appears to be the "Newmans" sign. the oddly shaped building is the Mill Cafe (1950). Continuing south is Ernest Duggan Barber Shop, Rollo Jewelry, Vacuum Cleaner Supply and the Midget Bar.

Here is a great photo of downtown Enid when Model T's and the trolley ruled the day. Enid had a very useful trolley system at one time.

This great photo shows the bustle of downtown Enid in 1933. This picture was taken looking at the NE corner of Independence and Randolph. You can see Evans Drug, a beauty supply company, S&Q Clothiers, Anthony's, a shoe store and more. This photo came from a collection of family photos from the Bull family

Broadway Tower in Enid, Oklahoma was constructed in 1931 by McMillen and Shelton Construction Company. The Broadway Development Company hired George Ernst von Blumenauer of Enid, and the Oklahoma City firm Layton, Hicks, and Forsythe to design the building. In 1943, Mr. Garrison Munger, Sr. purchased the building. It remained in his family's ownership until 1981. It is currently owned by Tower Investment Company and Oklahoma partnership. The building is the tallest in Enid at 14 stories tall. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985

The Esquire Movie Theatre. 217 W Randolph. Built in 1969, to replace an earlier 1,147 seat Esquire Theater (photo above), which burnt down in March 1969. In 1987 the Esquire Theater was housed in a dark red corner brick building. "Esquire" was spelled out with black letters on large individual white squares attached to the top front of the building.

Under the lettering was a typical pointed marquee and an overhang sheltering the entrance.

Youngblood Hotel Enid

Formerly Youngblood Hotel - now Continental North
trivia:
In a book -
"D.C. Bass & Sons Construction Co. - The First 75 Years" (1893-1968), it
tells of their trying to find a backer and ..."from the
Seminole oil fields came youthful Lawrence Youngblood with ambitions to construct a hotel.
This was in 1929. This was in 1929 and it was opened in 1931. A newspaper
clipping reports that throughout the years, it was a gathering place for
the wealthy and well-known and "Among its occupants at one time or another
were three past presidents - Harry Truman, Richard Nixon and John
Kennedy."
This article (undated), was an announcement that the hotel would
be closed, remodeled and converted to offices and shops.
