Enid Schools Showcase

Business Review USA selected EPS as one of three districts to showcase in its July 2011 online edition. The article, “Enid Public Schools: Providing the Ultimate Education,” is the third national article to feature EPS in the last 12 months.  According to Business Review USA officials, the district was chosen as one of the country’s top school districts due in part to “the innovation and efficiencies” it uses to provide education to 7,000 students.

Here’s the Plan … In Case of Bad Weather Safety is our first priority, and winter weather is no exception. Enid Public Schools officials consider travel conditions and other factors ― including slick sidewalks and parking lots ― before making a decision about whether or not to cancel school. If school will be closed for inclement weather or another unforeseen reason, an announcement of such a closing will be made no later than 6 a.m. the day in question on local radio stations and area television stations. In addition to the announcements, when school is closed, phone calls will be made to students’ primary telephone numbers using the district’s SchoolReach notification system. The phone calls will launch at 6 a.m. and most will be received within 15-20 minutes, as long as the line is not busy. Thank you for your cooperation.___________________________Enid Public Schools

**New: Students entering the seventh grade will be required to have a dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acelluar pertussis vaccine) for Whooping Cough, before the start of the 2011-12 school year.  Tdap vaccine is a combination vaccine that provides a booster dose of pertussis, with the tetanus and diphtheria booster. Tdap vaccine is routinely recommended for all children 11-12 years old.
Garfield County Health Department holds regular vaccination clinics each weekday. They are 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are welcome. For information, call 233-0650.

*Children may be complete with three (3) or four (4) doses depending on the brand of Hib vaccine used. PedvaxHib is a 3 dose series.
**If the 4th dose of DTP/DTaP is administered on or after the child’s 4th birthday, then the 5th dose of DTP/DTaP is not required.
***If the 3rd dose of Polio is administered on or after the child’s 4th birthday, then the 4th dose of Polio is not required. ****Previously unimmunized adolescents 11 through 15 years of age may receive a two (2) dose series of Merck® Adult Hepatitis B vaccine. All other children (younger or older) must receive three (3) doses of Hepatitis B vaccine.
•    The table above lists the vaccines that are required for children to attend childcare, preschool, kindergarten through twelfth grade, and college or post-secondary school in Oklahoma. Additional vaccines may be recommended, but are not required. For example, a 2nd dose of varicella vaccine is recommended before entering kindergarten, but not required.
•    Children attending childcare must be up-to-date for their age for the vaccines and number of doses listed. •    Hib and PCV vaccines are not required for students in pre-school, pre-kindergarten, or kindergarten.
*    All measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), varicella, and hepatitis A vaccine doses must be administered on or after the child’s first birthday or
within 4 days before the birthday.
•    Doses administered 4 days or less, before the minimum intervals or ages, are counted as valid doses.
•    For doses given on or after Jan. 1, 2003, the 5th dose of DTaP must be given on or after the 4th birthday or within 4 days before the 4th
birthday. This rule does not apply to doses given before 2003.
•    If a parent reports that their child had chickenpox disease, the child is not required to receive varicella vaccine.
•    It is not necessary to restart the series of any vaccine if the next dose due in the series has not been given on schedule; longer than
recommended time intervals between doses do not affect final immunity.
•    Children may be allowed to attend school and childcare if they have received the first dose in the series of any multi-dose vaccine, but must
complete the series on schedule. These children are “in the process” of receiving immunizations.
•    Children who do not complete the DTaP series by their 7th birthday must complete the series with Td and/or Tdap whichever is age-appropriate
for a total of 4 doses: 3 doses in the primary series and a booster. The booster dose may not be due for 5 to 10 years following the primary series, so some students may graduate before the booster dose is due.

Oklahoma Bible Academy was founded in the early 1910s by the New Hopedale Mennonite Church in Meno, Oklahoma. In 1917 the General Conference Mennonite Churches of Oklahoma decided to adopt the school as its field of service, and the name OBA was given to the school. The school moved from the local church to the previous home of the Meno Prepatory School shortly after.

By 1934 the enrollment had climbed to seventy-eight students, and all four years of high school were accredited by the state. The school became inter-denominational in 1946 and continued to “prepare men and women as light-bearers to attract souls in darkness to the Light of the world.” The 1960s brought many changes to the campus of Oklahoma Bible Academy with a new industrial arts building, a music-lunchroom, and a gymnasium. The school added both seventh and eighth grades in 1977 and became a member of the Association of Christian Schools Internationalin 1978.

With the growth of Christian elementary schools in Enid came the need for a Christian high school, and in 1982 the OBA Corporation voted to move the school to Enid, Oklahoma. In 1995 the school became concerned about space: locker areas were crowded, and classes were getting too big for available room. A stage was also needed for the new millennium, the school has added a football field in 2001, the Advance Learning Center in 2003, and a track in 2006. The current enrollment is two hundred sixty-two students.

Enid High Trivia:
EHS Shares Marble with Monuments.
by Bill Edson:

As they walk the halls of Enid High School, few students realize their school, or at least part of it, shares a heritage with two of the nation’s more famous monuments.

The 16 steps of the main entrance along with the wainscoting on the walls and the floor of the foyer are made of a special white marble once available only in a remote section of the Colorado high country. At the peak of the quarry’s operations before WWI, Colorado Yule was selected to provide marble for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Commission of Fine Arts found the stone “fit pre-eminently for a structure of the character of the Lincoln Memorial.” Seventeen years later, the company was again called on to furnish marble for one of the nation’s great memorials. Stone was brought from the quarry in 1931 for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a tribute to all the men who died in WWI.
