Chisholm Trail 150th Anniversary Cattle Drive

ENID, OK - The Chisholm Cattle Trail was the route by which hundreds of thousands of Texas longhorn cattle traveled northward across Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma and Kansas. The first herd of Texas cattle arrived in Abilene in August 1867 and on September 5, 1867, the first rail shipment of cattle departed to Kansas City. The route became known as the Chisholm Trail and referred to the entire cattle system from central Texas to
Abilene.

The O-K Chisholm Trail Cattle Drovers Association is reenacting a part of that history from September 12th through September 23rd, 2017. Each Cow Camp will be open to the public from approximately 3:00pm to 6:00pm daily. Visitors can expect to see drovers in authentic gear, their horses, 90+ head of cattle, and cowboy campfire cooking demonstrations.
-
Starts at Pond Creek, OK with public visitation daily. Caldwell hosts September 16th celebration on Main Street, cow camp visitation, and concert featuring the Sons of San Joaquin! The cattle continue trailing north to Mayfield and then to Clearwater with a September 22nd evening celebration, then on to the final destination just south of Wichita on September 23rd with a concert featuring Red Steagall!
-
The cooks, crew, cattle, and cowboys are excited to visit with and hopefully answer questions from everyone! Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, they will not be able to feed any visitors. Please use caution when entering camp sites: remember, cattle and horses are of their own mind.
