Car Tip: Check Engine vs Service Engine Soon

Check Engine Light vs Service Engine Soon Light

-
Are you one of those folks driving around with a “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon/Maintenance Required” light on your dash?  Too often, drivers don’t understand the difference between these two information lights.
-
The “Service Engine Soon/Maintenance Required” light generally means that something like a regularly scheduled maintenance is due on your vehicle (oil change, 75,000 mile maintenance, tire rotation, etc.)  It may not be “critical” to get the maintenance performed immediately, but that light will NOT disappear until it has been reset by the person who performs the maintenance.
-
The “Check Engine” light generally means there is some problem within the mechanical operation of the vehicle that has caused this light to come on.  Many times, it means that repairs are required so that your vehicle can continue to operate at optimum performance levels. (O2 Sensor, Evaporative Emissions leak, Mass Air Sensor, Knock Sensor, etc.)  Oftentimes, this light is an indicator of an easily fixed minor problem. (Replace gas cap, fueling while vehicle is running, etc.)
-
To get the most out of the life of your vehicle, it is best to respond to these lights rather than ignore them.  Schedule an appointment with your local reputable mechanic and get their input/opinion on this.  You might be surprised at the headaches you could avoid in the future regarding the mechanical dependability of your vehicle.
