Billie Jo was born Aug. 13, 1927, in San Angelo TX to William F. Underwood and Jessie Hardin Underwood and died Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Guthrie OK. She was a 1946 graduate of San Angelo High School. She attended the University of Texas for one year, studying journalism, before accepting the marriage proposal of the love of her life, the young Army Air Corps Cadet Duard Spleth, whom she met in San Angelo. When she pinned his wings on him, it was a bond that would last a lifetime.
-
They married on January 5, 1947 in a blizzard in San Angelo TX and made their home on the family farm in Waukomis, where they resided for the next 63 years, until Duard’s passing in 2010. They welcomed four children into their lives: Stephen William, James Walter, Ellen Ann and Jo Lou.
-
Billie Jo was a life-long member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in numerous positions, including Worthy Matron. She was an active member in the Waukomis Christian Church as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and member of Christian Women’s Fellowship.
-
She was active in the community and became a member of the Junior Farmerettes when she came to Waukomis. Her passion for Girl Scouting included leading local troops, as well as becoming a professional Girl Scout Field Director.
Billie Jo enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, Texas and Western history, and had a keen interest in genealogy. She and Duard loved fishing on Lake Texoma. Her family came first, but being a Texan was right behind.
-
Surviving are her sister, Juanita Underwood Bozek, Ennis TX; son Jim (Loretta Spleth) Enid; daughters Ellen Beer (Greg Beer), Guthrie and Jo Lou Spleth, Phoenix AZ; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
