Farewell to the Old Blog

Blogger.com, the platform that we've used since building EnidBuzz.com in 2005 has changed their terms of service and we will no longer be using them as our blogging software. We're going to a brand new, shiny WordPress platform!

What does this mean to you? First, this old blog will no longer be updated. We will keep a link to it and all of the old posts will remain online as a fun Enid archives. We are going to republish many of our most popular posts to the new blog so they can easily be found.

Second, our new blog home will now be on our homepage! You will soon be able to go directly to EnidBuzz.com and you'll be on the blog page.

Thirdly, we will have a few missing pieces and holes to fill in as we transition to the new site. We will eventually get all of our content to the new website but hopefully in a better format. Please bookmark the new blog page and stop by often!

Enid Water Tower Logo Contest

The City of Enid, Oklahoma 2010 Water Tower Logo & Color Scheme Contest

The closing date for receiving art submissions has passed, and the City has received thirty-four logos. Thank you to all who have participated! The City of Enid has sponsored this contest to gather public input on the design scheme for the elevated tank portion of one, or more, proposed City of Enid Water Towers. There are two proposed locations for new water towers. If the water tower project is approved, one or both may be built at the following locations: The Northwest corner of Meadowlake Park and/or near the intersection of Chestnut and 30th Street.

Copies of the art submissions will be on display at the
Enid Public Library through the month of May.

Original Art Submissions are being safeguarded.

Judging will take place Wednesday, April 28, 2010.

The City, in its sole discretion, may choose not to place the winning design(s) on the water tower(s) in the future. Regardless of this decision, the winner will receive a check for $1000.00, and a Plaque from the City of Enid during an Award Ceremony held at a City Commission Meeting.

The Winner will be notified.

Tri-State 2010 Starts Today in Enid

Wow! It's that time of year again. The rides are up and there will soon be music in the air. Tri-State will run from April 28th thru May 1st, 2010.

Here are a few new things going on:

Annual Tri-State Dance - Friday from 8 - 11 p.m. Admission is FREE! The dance is for Tri-State participants only.

Ottaway Carnival - Downtown Enid. Carnival runs through Sunday.

Thursday night will be drum night. A concert featuring David Anderson and his group along with the SEOSU marimba band will perform at Montgomery Hall on the NOC campus at 7:00 pm. A drum clinic will precede the concert starting at 4:30 pm. Cost of the concert is $5.00.

Friday night will feature the Tri-State Honor Jazz Band and Show Choir. Performing with these will be the UCO lab band from Edmond. The concert is at Briggs Auditorium at 7:00 pm. The annual Tri-State dance will follow in Montgomery Hall (NOC campus) starting at 8:30 pm.

The Tri-State parade will start at 10:30 am in downtown Enid on Saturday. KOMA's Ronnie Kaye will announce the parade and will be at the Tri-State car show after the parade. The car show will be on the east side of Convention Hall from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.

The Grand Concert will be 3:00 pm Saturday at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center. The Tri-State Honor Band, Orchestra and Choir will be in concert along with the NWOSU choir.

The 2nd Story Trunk Show

The 2nd Story - A Unique Gift & Book Shop/4RKids Foundation

The 2nd Story is sponsoring a special 2-day trunk showing of hundreds of pieces of beautiful and unique handmade jewelry. The jewelry is made in Peru by women in highly impoverished areas who have been homeless, abandoned or abused and are involved in a missionary effort there where they have been taught jewelry making as a skill to help support themselves and their children.

The pieces are one-of-a-kind and are crafted from sterling (.950) and Peruvian alpaca silver wire. They are accented with beads made from semi-precious stone, fresh water pearls, glass, clay, ceramic and man-made materials. The variety is amazing!

Please consider stopping by The 2nd Story gift shop this Monday or Tuesday from 10 am-5:30 pm to view these pieces and meet Norma Rice, missionary to Peru who works one-on-one with the ladies, helping them to improve their situations. Ten percent of sales are being donated to 4RKids Foundation, so all purchases benefit 2 very worthy causes!

It's the Weekend!

It's the weekend Enid and there's plenty to do around town.

The Enid Home Show starts today and runs through Sunday at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center. The show runs from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2 for adults, kids 12 and below are free.

There will be more than 300 vendors will be on hand with a wide variety of services, merchandise and helpful information.

If you happen to be running to OKC for the day or weekend, don't forget to drop by the OKC Arts Festival going on in downtown OKC. If you know of any Enid artists at the show please let us know.

A Day Without Violence observance will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at D. Bruce Selby Stadium. Admission is free. There will be free food, T-shirts to the first 100 people, games, activities and entertainment.

Garfield County Domestic Violence Task Force is sponsoring 'A Day Without Violence' as a way for the community to come together and show support for victims of crime.

And there should be plenty of garage sales going on around town. Get out and enjoy Enid!

'Tis The (Storm) Season!

Strong storms blew threw Enid early this morning leaving many residents without power and many trees without limbs. Driving around town this morning you could see that Enid had gotten a heavy rain. In many spotty sections there was heavy tree damage.

The downtown area had several trees knocked over and many large branches snapped. I guess this marks the official opening of the 2010 storm season!

The Good Old Days

Remember the good old days when you and three friends would go to the drive-in movie and sneak two of you in the trunk? You would sit and watch those cheesy, cornball B-Movies while trying to hear the bad audio on the huge metal speaker hanging in your window. One of the best parts of the show was walking up to the concession stand trying to see who was making out in the cars around you.

I stopped by the old Trail drive-in near Van Buren a few years back. Yep, it's still standing, but not in the exact shape it once was. Here is how it looked then.

Smokin' Jazz in Enid Tonight

The Smokin' Red Dirt BBQ event takes place Friday and Saturday at the Cherokee Strip Conference Center.

Check out more than 75 teams competing for cash prizes and bragging rights. This is a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event.

30 teams will be participating in the People's Choice BBQ tonight. $5 lets you sample ribs from 6 - 8 p.m. and allows you to vote for your favorite. Roberts Ranch will also be serving free pulled pork sandwiches beginning at 5 p.m.

Rib lovers should enter the Rib Crib rib eating contest at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Enid Noon AMBUCS will host a barbecue lunch 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults. There will be vendor booths and special activities for children during the morning.

Main Street Jazz Stroll is tonight from 8 - 11 p.m. around Downtown Enid

16 jazz performances will be going on throughout the evening: BluesTiger at the main stage between Cherokee Strip Conference Center and Convention Hall; Nancy Dillard at Apple Annie's; Piper Leigh at Cafe Garcia; The Jazz Daddies at Callahan's; Doc Bryant Jazz Band at the courthouse Gazebo; Sheree Chamberlain at The Felt Bird; Vickey Rose at For You Boutique; Bill Benkendorf at Garfield Furniture; Donnie Record at On The Sidewalk; The Groove N Gs at Pastimes; Greg Stong at Scribner's; Kylie Morgan at Simpson's Old Time Museum; Big Blue Dump Truck at the conference center; Jim Nay at Soapweeds and Cactus; The Gene Pool at Q-Spot; and E-Town Rythm Kings at Panevino.

A fireworks show is set for 9 p.m. in the parking lot at Cherokee and Independence if it is not raining.

Proceeds help out Enid Habitat for Humanity and AMBUCS projects.

Oklahoma Magazine has compiled its list of 40 Under 40 for 2010. The 40 Under 40 Class of 2010 represents a diverse group of young professionals who are moving up and giving back.

It's the first weekend of April and it looks like it will be a great start to the month and to the Spring season. Temperatures look to be great with little chance of rain. Get out and enjoy life!

First Friday - activities going on in downtown Enid this evening. Hit the Square for a good time. (if you have specific events going on, send them to us and we would be happy to post them)
Corvette Expo - 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center. Billed as the largest indoor Corvette show in Oklahoma. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children younger than 12.
Easter Sunday - time to make it to church to celebrate Easter. Many churches and organizations will be having Easter egg hunts (if you have a hunt please let us know)
iPads Released - if you pre-ordered your iPad it will be arriving at your door on Saturday. If you didn't you can stand in line at the nearest Apple store or Best Buy.
Final Four - a great time to watch college basketball!

Public Library of Enid News for April

The Public Library of Enid & Garfield County will be closed all day on Monday, April 5, 2010, for staff in-service training.

Items can be returned to the library during closed hours in the Book Drop, located in the alley between the Library and the Post Office on the north side of the building. There are no overdue fines, so library items can also be returned without penalty when the library reopens on Tuesday.

April is a busy month at the Public Library of Enid & Garfield County. They are hosting an exhibit from the National Library of Medicine entitled Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine. They have events planned all month long. Here are some highlights:

April 2 - FIRST FRIDAY! Stop in and see the exhibit. Take a library tour with a Marauder's Map and collect trading cards.
April 6 -Potions with Mrs. Snape. A fun way to experience the science of solutions and chemical reactions. Elementary/Teen.
April 13 -Harry Potter Scene It - Test your Harry Potter movie trivia against the competition. We'll also be making and eating chocolate dipped magic wands! Elementary/Teen.
April 20 -Charms with Mrs. Snape - She's back. Join her class to learn to move things without touching them! Elementary/Teen.
April 26 - BOOK DISCUSSION: Grown Ups Love Harry Potter Too! Adults.
April 27 - Harry Potter CLUE! Games. Elementary/Teen.

Greatest American Dog to be back in Enid!

Travis and Presley, "Greatest American Dog" winners will be back in Enid Tuesday promoting their DVD and book on teaching kids manners. The two won the CBS competition series that aired in summer 2008.

Their learning series, "Adventures with Travis and Presley", was shot by KJ Productions and the book was illustrated by Curtis Tucker of The Curtoons Cartoon Company, both located in Enid.

The team will be at Security National Bank from 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday at the 201 W. Broadway location signing books and taking pictures. Drop by to shake hands and paws.

Help Out A Great Cause! MDA Lock-Up in Enid

The Muscular Dystrophy Association in OKC is having a fundraising event on April 21st at Applebees in Enid. They are looking to recruit local business and community leaders as "jailbirds" at this Lock-Up event.

On the day of the event the jailbirds are "arrested for having a big heart" and taken to Applebees where they will be served lunch and have a chance to raise more bail and bring the money they have collected in the previous weeks. This is a really fun twist on a fundraising event! They hope to get the community involved in addition to local businesses for volunteers and donations.

The event is April 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Applebees.

Harmony was born 3-1-09 and is about 35 pounds. She is friendly and well behaved. Harmony would love to meet you, please come by the shelter to see her.

All Dogs/puppies are tested for Heartworm if needed and placed on heartworm, they are de-wormed and vaccinations are kept current. Each animal will be spayed or neutered as soon as medically possible. The spay or neuter is included in your adoption fee, and will be done free as long as it is done in our facility. Many of our dogs live in Foster homes. You may want to call first before stopping by to make sure the dog you are interested in is at our facility. Our adoption fee is $65.00. All cats and kittens are tested for Felv and FIV. Vaccinations are made current and deworming is done. Cats and Kittens are spayed and neutered as soon as medically safe.
