This is sad really and nice at the same time. A business is using a tragedy to help them drum up business for themselves. Why not just donate money to the cause to help the people. I think it is nice that they are thinking of these people, but why do they have to tie in their support to how much business that they drum up? If I bought an item that was less than a dollar, would they still donate a dollar? Is it one dollar per purchase, so If I spent $85 total, is it one dollar? Or is it one dollar per item? Seems like they are trying to do a good thing but in reality I think it is a way to try and drum up some new business off a massive tragedy. But I do think it is nice of them to think of the people though.
Being a new business we are doing as much as we can to help and we would do ten times more if we could afford to. The thought of it being a way to make money did not enter our minds. We are not planning on an out pour of new customers from this.
If you bought an item for less than a dollar of course we would donate $1. We are doing a dollar an item so if you bought 5 things that's 5 dollars donated. We sell a lot of small inexpensive items.
Please stop trying to see the worst in people.
Stela & Riley
Well, being a new business and being open to what customers think, then I hope you can accept some constructive customer feedback.
I can appreciate your situation and do hope that you can help them in Haiti. I know you only have the best intentions in mind and are trying to help people. That is what I said above, I said it was nice of you to help them and it is a good thing. I just do not think sometimes everyone thinks of how people can react to a tragedy.
My only point is that in a time of tragedy, sometimes people will see things differently. If a car dealership said if you come in and buy a car, we will send $100 to Haiti. I think people would think that is strange. I think it is ok to say, hey, we believe in helping people and think this is a tragedy. We donated $300 to the relief effort. If you are interested in donating to this effort and want to help the people, here are some great organizations that you can donate to if you want to help. To tie a genuine good samaritan gift or charity to the sales of items, it is called jumping on the band wagon, basically jumping on to the new thing to help bring customers in for a good cause. I think most people would see that as odd, or a way to attract new business off of the tragedy. I am not saying you are doing something bad, all business people do these things. It is human nature to want to help people but also to ensure the business is healthy too.
Here is a good one: American Red Cross:
Go to RedCross.org, hit donate now button at top and then International Response Fund. You also may text "Haiti" to 90999 to donate $10 to the International Response Fund. The money will go directly to relief efforts in Haiti and be charged to your cell phone bill. Or call 1-800-Red-Cross. If you speak, Spanish call 1-800-257-7575.
SHAGGY D, IF YOU FEEL THIS IS ARGUING, PLEASE DELETE THE POST. I do not think it is, just trying to make a point about people profiting off of a tragedy right after it happens instead of genuinely donating without publicity to a worthy cause. I am not saying a bad thing about anyone or any business, just trying to prove an alternative point of view about society and the business practice of Americans.
Ok, In all fairness I looked at your website and you do refer to American Red cross, and other organizations for donations. Maybe it was the title I did not like, The Felt Bird needs your help.
Maybe a better title should have been, The people of Haiti need your help. Then in the post maybe say something about the Felt Bird is wanting to help, etc. and the Felt Bird has some great ways and organizations to tell you about to help them.
Anyways, I am done, no more posting on this subject. Peace. Best wishes on your endeavor.
On our website (www.thefeltbird.com) we included options on how to help which included American Red Cross as well as visiting charitynavigator.com to help in searching for other organizations.
Hey Guys, I do not think this is arguing at all. Comments are always welcome.
I really do not believe Stela and Riley had any thoughts of profiting from the tragedy at all. I posted the information and title on my own and not because I was asked to, so they were not looking for publicity.
I figured if they were going to help Haiti, I would help them. This is most likely my fault in the misunderstanding.
I do understand your points on the matter though. There are people that will take advantage of the tragedy in certain situations.
Let's hope they all get the help they need as quickly as possible!
