Remember Layfield Shoe Mart in Enid?

(click for a larger view)

Renovation on the building at Grand and Broadway has uncovered some vintage signs from one of the past occupants. The building on the southeast corner of the intersection was once the Layfield Shoe Mart. It is currently a mattress store.

Wess Grey remembers Layfields selling some of the grooviest boots in town. Does anyone know what other businesses occupied this corner?

A Little Enid Trivia

Charlie Rich (December 14, 1932 - July 25, 1995) was an American Country Music Singer/Musician. He was a Grammy Award winner that played and sang rockabilly, jazz, blues, country, and gospel.

In the latter part of his life, Rich acquired the nickname The Silver Fox. He is perhaps best remembered for a pair of 1973 hits, "Behind Closed Doors" and "The Most Beautiful Girl". "The Most Beautiful Girl" topped the U.S. country singles charts, as well as the pop singles charts.

What does all of this have to do with Enid, Oklahoma? Well, Charlie actually began his professional music career while stationed at Vance, AFB in Enid!

Charlie met his wife, Margaret Ann, in high school - they married in 1952 and raised two sons and two daughters. After a single year at the University of Arkansas (UA) in Fayetteville, where he was a member of the marching band, Rich spent four years (1953 - 56) in the Air Force, based in Enid, Oklahoma, where he played with a blues and jazz group called the Velvetones. Margaret Ann was their vocalist. The jazz group moonlighted in the local honky-tonks and clubs around the area.

Upon his discharge he returned to his father's cotton farm, but Margaret Ann had other ideas. She took a demo tape to the Sun Records studios, where producer Sam Phillips was working with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Roy Orbison. And as they say, the rest is history.

Does anyone remember seeing them?

Spelling Bee Fundraiser at the Enid Library

The Friends of the Library of Enid, OK, in partnership with the Enid Community Foundation and the Public Library of Enid & Garfield County, invite you to show off your spelling skills in the inaugural Bee Our Friend Adult Spelling Bee fundraiser.

Get a team of three together, come up with a creative team name, crazy costumes, and show up with your most enthusiastic cheerleaders on Friday, February 5, 2010. There will be a little pre-competition fun, and the challenge will begin at 7:00 p.m. sharp!

Event coordinator, Katie Carmack says the focus will be more on fun than on spelling prowess. "We definitely want wild and creative costumes. Have your cheerleaders ready with pom-poms. Audience participation could give you an extra chance if you misspell a word!"

The Friends of the Library have planned the event as a fundraiser and membership drive. Dedicated to making the Public Library of Enid & Garfield County the best library possible, the Friends rely solely on volunteers and donations in their efforts to help support the library. Because membership has slowly declined over recent years, the spelling bee is also a way to reinvigorate the organization and draw in new members.

Team sponsorship levels start at $50 for a three person team and include a t-shirt for each team member. Corporate sponsorship is also welcome, and program ads are available at the $100 and $150 team levels. Team registration is limited to the first 20 teams and is due by December 31, 2009. Once registered, a team can also send Al P. Habet, the resident bee, to issue a challenge to anyone! Pick up a registration form from the Library's front desk, or request an email copy from kcarmack@enid.org. Registered teams will receive an information packet with study words in early January.

For more information, please contact Carmack by calling the library at 234-6313, email kcarmack@enid.org, or visit the Library's website at www.enid.org/library .

Enid Loses An Icon

When you needed a Halloween costume you knew just where to go. When you wanted a funny prank gift you knew just who had the perfect item. When you wanted to rummage through an old vintage store you knew just the place.

Almost everyone in town has been to Papa Torry's at one time or another over the years. Sitting on Grand with the worst parking situation in town you knew you were in for a treat once you entered the store. There was Papa Torry ready to let you try on a Santa costume or help you find the right mix of make up.

I remember going in my younger years looking for prank gifts and fun little magic tricks. You could spend hours in the store and never see everything. It wasn't the biggest, it wasn't the brightest and it wasn't the most organized, but it sure was an adventure every time you went.

Papa Torry was an Enid icon with a name that was immediately recognized. He kept his vintage store open year after year even though many shoppers began buying from the bigger national retailers. You could always count on Papa Torry for the unusual and unique.

Charles Lipps (Papa Torry) passed away last Saturday Oct 31. He would have been 85 the next day. Fitting that he should die on Halloween since that was his busiest season and one of his favorite times of the year. His Celebration of Life service will be at Central Christian Church in Enid on Tuesday, Nov 10th at 2:00 PM.

RIP Papa Torry, you will be missed.

New Oklahoma Laws

Here are a few new laws that took effect on November 1st, 2009 in Oklahoma:

HIGHWAY

HB 1368 requires drivers on multilane highways to remain in the right lane unless they are passing other vehicles. It does not apply to those driving in the far-left lane because of traffic conditions or flow, or road configuration. (Thank you lord for this one! Stop driving in the left lane at 50 mph!)

CURFEW FOR TEENS

HB 1599 changes the teen driving curfew to 10 p.m. from 11 p.m.

LEMON LAW

SB 812 applies to new vehicles with less than 15,000 miles in the first year of ownership. A consumer who bought a defective vehicle would have the option of a refund or a replacement vehicle of a similar type. The legislation includes a formula for determining a lower price for vehicles with more than 15,000 miles. The vehicle would qualify as a "lemon" if the vehicle is in a shop for 30 business days for the same problem or if it's in the shop four times for the same problem in the first year of ownership.
