Puppets Coming To The Library
Gina, Mitch, Jay, Sally, Carmen, and Corey are the names of some unusual newcomers to the Public Library of Enid and Garfield County. They sound like everyday children; however they are different because they are life size puppets with disabilities that are brought to life by a puppeteer. They will be in the Great Plains Room on Tuesday June 16th, at 2:00 p.m.
Nancy Gardner, Director of Special Projects for the Oklahoma Parents Center, explains that the puppets help children become more comfortable with other children who have disabilities. The puppets have lively personalities, and demonstrate to the children that children with disabilities play sports, swim, and argue with their brothers and sisters just like everyone else. The puppets were brought to Oklahoma by the Oklahoma Parents Center from the Pacer Center in Minneapolis where the "Count Me In" programs have been presented to more than 350,000 people. The puppets are three feet tall hand and rod puppets representing a diverse group of children. The program consists of three to four skits with plenty of time for questions. Sign-up is not required, but appreciated. Call 234-6313 for more information. Friday, June 12, 2009Enid, Oklahoma - June 1966 Here's a fun newspaper clipping from June 1966 sent to us by Jo Aguirre. The page shows old movie advertisments. One ad is for the Chief, located downtown on Independence. The cost of a nightly show was $1.50 for adults and .50 for kids.Another ad is for the Trail Drive-In and another for the Esquire located on Randolph on the Square. Walt Disney's Bambi was just being released and John Wayne was the king of the box office. What I love most about this ad is the smaller ad at the top. It's an ad for Sandy's, one of the restaurants I most remember as a kid growing up in Enid. I remember the dancing girl logo on top of the sign out front. And who could pass up a quality hamburger for 15 cents?! Thursday, June 11, 2009Wednesday, June 10, 2009Casting Call!
