Snow Bandits

My girls and I spent a little time in the snow yesterday building a snow bunny. The snow was perfect and the weather warmed up for a fun day outside.

It wasn't much over an hour before two snow bandits drove up to our house, got out, and vandalized our poor, defenseless bunny. We've heard reports from around town that they also struck other unknowing snowmen.

We're not out to punish these unruly culprits but we would like to call them out and see if a little embarrassment might make them think twice the next time they decide to tackle every snowman in town.

Here's a description of the yutes: two white males, one with dark wavy hair, late teens, driving a gray/silver Toyota SUV (most likely a Highlander), OSU plates and a sports sticker in the back window (drivers side). We know they hit Indian Hills and the Waverly District but most likely other areas also.

Do you know these two? Dozens of little kids around town would like to pelt them with snow balls. If you know them, we'd like you to shame them into doing a little community service for making some very happy little kids cry.

This Is No April Fool's Joke...

This is going to make a lot of people happy, and others very upset. Although we've maintained a Non-Smoking section for the 6 years we've been in business, we are required to make the main room smoke-free as well. We appreciate all of our customers, especially our regulars, so we'll try to address both groups.

For the smokers out there, we're deeply sorry. For the last 6 years, Callahan's has been the only classy place in Enid to enjoy a cigarette or fine cigar. For those that know the simple pleasure of a good smoke, after a meal or with a drink, there's nothing that really compares. Our servers and bartenders also know that smokers tend to be laid-back, extremely interesting people, who are also really good tippers. We dread the idea of ostracizing this loyal group of people, but the matter is out of our hands. We sincerely hope that you will continue to visit us while we work on a covered patio solution.

To the non-smokers. Most of you will accept this change with open arms. You have always loved the unique atmosphere of Callahan's, but the cigarette smoke has just been too much to bear. We are aware of good customers who have even curtailed their visits to Callahan's for just that reason. We've missed you, and look forward to seeing you return with regularity. In fact, we'll be depending on you to ensure that Callahan's continues to be a thriving enterprise through the difficult transition. If you are excited about the change, please tell all your friends.

Enid Traveler Displays Photos and Art

A View of Enid High School

Here's a 2009 photo of Enid High School for those of you that are now living outside of Enid. All of the windows have been bricked in to make them smaller and new window glass has been installed.

The buildings north of Enid High have all been torn down including the Bible Building, that little apartment complex and the other two story homes. Because of that there is a nice view of the school that most likely will not remain long. New medical buildings will soon be built in this space and this great view will be lost. Thriller movie is being filmed in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Film and Music Office, along with Killer Inside Me Productions LLC in conjunction with Muse Productions, Los Angeles and Revolution Films, London, U.K., recently announced that a new movie project will be filmed in Oklahoma.

The Killer Inside Me is a psychological thriller about a small town deputy sheriff named Lou Ford, based on a novel written by Jim Thompson. Thompson, who was born in Anadarko, Okla., has also written the novels The Grifters and The Getaway.

Jill Simpson, Director of the Oklahoma Film & Music Office said, "We could not be more excited to have a film of this caliber shooting in Oklahoma. The majority of filming was initially slated for New Mexico. However, after the production team heard about our incentives and came in for a scout, we were able to land all but one location here in Oklahoma. It's a real coup for us."

The film will be directed by Michael Winterbottom who was the director of A Mighty Heart, the story based on the life of journalist Daniel Pearl, starring Angelina Jolie.

The Killer Inside Me's leading cast includes Jessica Alba as Joyce Lakeland, Kate Hudson as Amy Stanton, and Casey Affleck as Lou Ford. The film also stars Bill Pullman and Elias Koteas.

The film will employ cast, crew and extras from Oklahoma, and the production is based in Guthrie. Shooting is scheduled to begin in Oklahoma on March 30 and will take place around the towns of Guthrie, Oklahoma City, Cordell, Enid and Tulsa.

The producers for The Killer Inside Me will apply for the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program through the Oklahoma Film & Music Office. The rebate offers up to 15 percent cash back on Oklahoma expenditures to qualifying companies filming in the state. The Killer Inside Me is the second film to meet qualifications since the state's rebate program was funded in 2005.

Fire! Alert!

Black smoke filled the air on the east side of town this afternoon. The fire was located near the 300 block of East Ash. From the looks of things the fire was confined to something located in a junk yard.

A steady stream of traffic began circling the area to get a better look. These photos show how much smoke was being created.

Library Makes Overdue Fines A Thing Of The Past

The Public Library of Enid & Garfield County has eliminated overdue fines for library materials and updated its other fees and policies in an effort to encourage greater library use and be more responsive to the needs of our users. When the economy is in a downturn, library usage generally goes up. We do not want anyone who has returned items in good condition to be blocked from continuing to use the library.

There will no longer be a non-resident fee for users who live outside Garfield County. Anyone with a picture ID and proof of address can get a library card free of charge. Overdue fines have stopped being generated by our library software. Older fines in the system will be deleted over time. Replacement fees for lost or damaged items will now be the list price of an item plus a processing fee, instead of a set amount. These changes were made by city ordinance in January 2009 and approved by the Library Board of Trustees on February 12, 2009.

Our procedures for overdue items are changing. Patrons are now getting a phone call when an item is 7 days overdue and a postcard when an item is 14 days overdue. After 14 days, we do not allow items to be renewed unless they are physically brought back to the library. At 21 days overdue, a letter is sent listing the price of each item that is overdue. We are also looking at other ways to contact people about their library accounts, such as e-mail and text messaging.

For more information, contact Michelle (Swain) Mears, Library Director, at 580-234-6313.

3G Coming To Enid

AT&T plans new investment in Oklahoma, to add more than 30 cell sites

By Associated Press

3:34 PM CDT, March 10, 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - AT&T says it will add more than 30 new cell sites in Oklahoma this year and will launch its third-generation mobile broadband network in Ada, Ardmore, Enid and Muskogee.

Nationwide, AT&T will invest between $17 billion and $18 billion in 2009. The company declined Tuesday to disclose the size of its investment in Oklahoma. But the company says it invested more than $675 million in its Oklahoma network from 2006 to 2008.

Steve Gray, vice president and general manager for AT&T, says the company is constantly evaluating its network and performance in the state. Gray says investments in recent years have included switching offices and cell sites.

Last year, the company added almost 20 new cell sites in Oklahoma and launched its 3G network in Shawnee, Lawton and Bartlesville.

**************************

Many of you may be wondering what 3G technology is and why would you want it. 3G is third-generation (3G) coverage of wireless broadband capabilities. 3G makes surfing and downloading much faster.

For wireless laptop card customers, the top end of AT&T's typical 3G (third-generation) network downlink speed range has increased 20 percent and the top end of the uplink speed range has increased 50 percent. With download speeds of up to 1.7 Mbps (megabits per second) and upload speeds of up to 1.2 Mbps LaptopConnect customers can access large files and multimedia applications faster than ever before.

With 3G customers can not only surf the Web and download files faster than ever, but they can also experience the very latest interactive mobile applications, such as live video sharing and remote home monitoring.

Rumors, Rumors, Rumors

Don't you just love juicy rumors? Rumors are just exactly that, rumors. While some are fun to spread and seem to grow in exaggeration, others are a little bothersome and need to be investigated.

We at Enid Buzz are always up for a good rumor. I only post this story because I have heard it from multiple sources and some seem to think there might be a wee bit of a cover up going on. Whether this is true or not I don't know. I won't use names, places or other solid information that I have. If you have proof of this story please let us know. Please do not use names unless you actually saw this incident.

Here's how the story goes: It seems as though a male anesthesiologist at a local hospital became irritated by a male nurse anesthetist. After a brief disagreement the doctor punched, and knocked out, the other male. A third male entered the situation and was headbutted by the doctor. According to rumor, the police were called and the patients that had been waiting for services were told to leave and return at a later date.

Fact or fiction? We don't know, but rumors like this don't usually spread the way this one has without there being something behind it. We only post it here for fun. Again, no names are being used. Please do not use names in the comment section if you do not have 100% proof of this story.

Another story a little birdie told us was that a certain smoking restaurant in town may have lost their lease and may looking for a new location. Any scoop here?

If you've seen Bigfoot or have been abducted by an alien we would also be interested in hearing your story.

And that's the Enid Buzz.
