An Enid Photo Mystery...
This great old photo shows the aftermath of a hotel fire in Enid. The date of the picture is thought to be from the 20's or 30's. Do you recognize the hotel or the location of this building? It looks as though there might be a barbers pole in front and possibly the word cafe on the window. Help us specify the location!

I wonder if it could be between Randolph and Maple on the east side.
Wasn't it the Youngblood that burned, and where was that located? That may be a clue as to where this may have been taken.
I have never heard about the Youngblood Holel burning. Any idea when that was?
You might be thinking it was the Oxford Hotel but that burned much later than this photo.
I think this might be the St. Joe Hotel in the 200 block of South Grand, west side of street.
Great guess on the St. Joe Hotel but it burned in 1901 and I found an article that stated the fire dept. only had a two-wheeled cart with 500 feet of fire hose, and horse drawn Pabst Blue Ribbon hook and ladder
Yes, but in 1910 (Polk Directory) the St. Joe Hotel is listed on S. Grand and in 1923 (Enid phone book) it was located at 212 S. Grand.
That could be it then, the St. Joe Hotel. It would have been where Garfield Furniture is today.
Although, I think that might have been the Grand Ave. Hotel in the 1920's. Humm?
I found an article about a fire on Oct. 5, 1926 at the Dudley Hotel at 212 South Broadway.
Enid sure had a lot of hotels in the past. Sounds excessive for such a small town.
The St. Joe was on the west side of Grand, next to the alley. The Newton Hotel was east of that (later on). And yes, there were a lot of hotels. I found eleven listed in 1923.
Thanks for the info! Was this entire block the St. Joe Hotel or were there other businesses along the block? So, this might be the corner of Grand and Cherokee? Is that correct?
I had a person do some research. She told me that it was the "Brown Hotel". Any ideas where that may have been? Also, The St.Joe had an angled corner and the door in that angle. This one is squared off.
P.S. Shaggy D - Broadway is an East-West street.
Todd
Hey Todd, thanks! Yeah, just noticed the S. Broadway thing, it was from a newspaper article out of California.
I don't find a Dudley or a Brown Hotel in my references. I'm still trying to substantiate my St. Joe theory, however. If I'm correct, the building at the corner on the right would be at Maine and Grand.
the building at the corner on the right would be at Maine and Grand.
Looking to the north west?
Yes, looking northwest from approximately the old saloon location, right at the alley. But this would mean the building at the corner of Maine and Grand would have been rebuilt after this fire and I can't verify any of this information, but I'm working on it.
