Why wasn't this building saved? I remember going there as a child to take French lessons from an Asian (vietnamese?)woman.
Here's the article that I pulled the photo from...

Shaggy D I appreciate that! Amazing that Enid didn't have the funds to make it an historical landmark. Oh well, hindsight is always best.
This still breaks my heart. I loved this building and have some great memories of the time I spent there as a child.

I loved the Carnegie Public Library in Enid, OK - I graduated from EHS in 1972 when they tore down this building, I cried!!! They tore down history, a building that built minds and memories, and it was a historical building which should of been saved!
BUT David Nicholas bought the property, and he evidentlyl had a need to add another parking lot back then. SAD & POOR DECISION! Shame on Enid for not restoring this building! It could have been such a beautiful landmark for Enid....now it's a overgrown parking lot!
What a tragedy!
I can remember walking up those stairs.....they seem to go upwards forever, but of course back in the 60's I was a small child learning to read. Then the children's books were in the NE Corner of the library, oh...I loved those little talbes & chairs, sitting there looking through books and the "viewers" they had for us to us.
I can still smell that musty scent of the old bldg & 1000's of books, I can hear the creaking of the wooden floors....
I also remember the "Reader Book Club" and when you'd read so many books you'd bet a "pin" such as a green bookwork, an apple, etc. and it was fun to read and collect those pins. EDUCATION RANG OUT IN THE WALLS OF THIS BEAUTIFUL LIBRARY, now sadly only a memory to many of us that enjoyed that great place that housed so many books we enjoyed way back when..
I retract my comment above...from the posted article below the library picture, it said that Ronald Petty purchased the property...and then donated it to his church, etc.etc. BUT I remember when David Nicholas purchased the Bass Bldg. and Hotel Youngblood he also purchased the libary building. Maybe someone who does work in the Garfield County Courthouse could look up the ownership in the Deeds office sometime. EITHER WAY, SAD SAD SAD THAT ENID LET THIS HISTORICAL AND BEAUTIFUL LIBRARY FALL TO PIECES THAT IT WAS CONDEMNED!
The most amazing thing to me was the mummified body, perported to be John Wilkes Booth, which rested on-display under-glass in the library. Unfortunately the body was sold to a carnival which the new library was built and has benn long lost.
