Library Makes Overdue Fines A Thing Of The Past
The Public Library of Enid & Garfield County has eliminated overdue fines for library materials and updated its other fees and policies in an effort to encourage greater library use and be more responsive to the needs of our users. When the economy is in a downturn, library usage generally goes up. We do not want anyone who has returned items in good condition to be blocked from continuing to use the library.
There will no longer be a non-resident fee for users who live outside Garfield County. Anyone with a picture ID and proof of address can get a library card free of charge. Overdue fines have stopped being generated by our library software. Older fines in the system will be deleted over time. Replacement fees for lost or damaged items will now be the list price of an item plus a processing fee, instead of a set amount. These changes were made by city ordinance in January 2009 and approved by the Library Board of Trustees on February 12, 2009.
Our procedures for overdue items are changing. Patrons are now getting a phone call when an item is 7 days overdue and a postcard when an item is 14 days overdue. After 14 days, we do not allow items to be renewed unless they are physically brought back to the library. At 21 days overdue, a letter is sent listing the price of each item that is overdue. We are also looking at other ways to contact people about their library accounts, such as e-mail and text messaging.
