The year ended around here a bit on the down side. Our small staff has been hospitalized and knocked out with the flu. But never fear! We will be back at 100% with new stuff for 2009.

Bookmark the blog and check back. We will have more contests, more drawings and more vintage Enid on the way.

May you and your family have a safe, healthy and successful 2009!

Enid Makes LIFE

LIFE Magazine has released its entire collection of photos taken over the years. You can now search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google.

Photos from Enid are a part of the collection. Several photos were taken of the grain elevators in Enid, which at the time, were some of the largest in the world. The photos are now available for personal non-commercial use only and can easily found using the Google Image Search Engine.

Above are a few of those photos. (Click photo for a larger view)

Enid's Winter Wonderland 2008

Weather Reminder

Reminder for Enid School Parents:
Here's the Plan ... In Case of Bad Weather

Safety is our first priority, and winter weather is no exception. Enid
Public Schools officials consider travel conditions and other factors
- including slick sidewalks and parking lots - before making a
decision about whether or not to cancel school.

If school will be closed for inclement weather or another unforeseen
reason, an announcement of such a closing will be made no later
than 6 a.m. the day in question on local radio stations and area
television stations. Tune in to the following for such announcements:
KCRC 1390 AM, KGWA 960 AM, KNID 107.1 FM, KOFM 103.1 FM and
KXLS 95.7 FM. Phone calls are also made to our partners at KEIF 104.7
FM and KLVV 88.7 FM, as well as PEGASYS. Additionally television
stations in Oklahoma City will be contacted, such as KFOR (NBC -
Channel 4), KOCO (ABC - Channel 5), KWTV (CBS - Channel 9) and
KOKH (FOX - Channel 8).

In addition to the announcements, when school is closed, phone
calls will be made to students' primary telephone numbers using the
district's SchoolReach notification system. The phone calls will
launch at 6 a.m. and most will be received within 15-20 minutes, as
long as the line is not busy. (If your phone number has
changed, please contact your child's school.)

Thank you for your cooperation.

The Loss Of Johnny Quarles

http://www.enidbuzz.com/images/johnny-quarles.jpgEnid has lost one of its most famous citizens. Best-selling author Johnny C. Quarles died Sunday morning of natural causes at the age of 62.

Quarles was known for his wonderful western novels which were all centered around the Old West. He had several of his books listed on the New York Times best-seller list.

Another of his claims to fame was writing screen plays for television, one of which was the series "Lonesome Dove."

Quarles was a great Enid resident helping out where he could and he will be greatly missed. The services for Quarles will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Arrangements are pending at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
