Local Cartoonist & Photographer Featured!

http://www.curtistucker.com/images/midwestceo.jpg

When the associate editor of Midwest CEO Magazine went looking for the latest professional to feature in his December issue, he went straight to the Internet. Dayne Logan was looking for a cartoonist to feature in the magazines Goatlocker section.

Each month a person is selected and their unusual or unique working environment is focused on in the magazine section. Logan ended up on the blog of local cartoonist Curtis D. Tucker and found several photos of his fun cartoon studio. Tucker was contacted and agreed to a short interview about his cartoon company and an in-studio photo shoot.

After the phone interview Logan needed a photographer to head to Enid to take the picture for the magazine. He didn't have to go far because he found Muncy Photography in Enid and asked photographer Dawn Muncy to take the photograph for the magazine.

Being that Tucker and Muncy knew each other the photo shoot went well and the photo above was the one selected for the magazine.

Midwest CEO Magazine is a regional magazine and can be found in most large book stores. From Denver to St. Louis, Kansas City to Oklahoma City, businesses in the Midwest all face a similar set of challenges and can learn from each others solutions. These solutions, tips and articles are what you will find in each issue of Midwest CEO. Visit their site.

Help The YWCA This Christmas

Every year the YWCA relies solely on community donations to provide a wonderful holiday to not only their clients in the Crisis Center and Halfway House, but to low-income families throughout Enid.

In answer to the many questions from the community, they have prepared a YWCA Christmas packet for this year. Please review the PDF information page below.

We would like to thank Kenneth and Robin McDaniel for contributing this story which was first posted on the Vance web site. We hope you enjoy.

http://www.enidbuzz.com/images/doll.jpg9/10/2008 - VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla.

Military bases all over the world host hundreds of distinguished visitors every year, but this year some bases will be hosting a DV unlike any other. Her name is Kealoha, she is 18 inches tall and is an American Girl Travelling Doll.

Kealoha belongs to my daughter, Katherine McDaniel, age 7. Her father is Tech. Sgt. Kenneth McDaniel, assigned to the 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance AFB, Okla. Kealoha left Vance AFB last March on a trip that will last until the end of this year. By the time she returns she will have visited hosts in 12 states as well as England. Six of those hosts are fellow military families.

American Girl travelling dolls originated with the Society of American Girl Doll Collectors. The idea is simple. A collection of "hosts" welcome a doll as a guest in their home and community. The visiting doll takes part in daily family life - outings, dentist appointments, school, parties, etc. - which is documented with pictures and often commemorated with small souvenirs. At the end of her visit, usually about two weeks long, the doll is shipped on to the next host.

The Enid Municipal Zoo

(click photo for a larger view)
One of the things I remember about Enid as a kid was throwing peanuts into the monkey pit at the zoo. I've been asking for anyone with a photo of the zoo to send it in, without much luck I might add.

Recently Gary L. Brown has also started investigating the history of what was once called the Grady Brock Zoo. EnidHistory.org has compiled a small amount of information along with the photo above and is now researching a scrapbook of a long time Park Superintendent for Enid.

The zoo was located near Government Springs where the Cherokee Strip Museum is being built and was open for 20 years. The zoo was closed in 1972.

If you have photos, stories or information about the zoo please contact us and Gary L. Brown at EnidHistory.org.

Where'd That Come From? - Update!

Update!!

Commissioners voted to remove a stop sign recently erected for the eastbound lane of Randolph at the intersection with Johnson. The city was catching heat for throwing up the sign without any warning.

11/11/08
Wake up Enid!! You now have a new stop sign in town.

The City of Enid has added a stop sign in one of the oddest places I could ever think of. That really weird intersection at Randolph and Johnson where the railroad tracks are. It has been a three way stop for years but a new stop sign has been added, without much warning, for the eastbound traffic on Randolph.

I'm not sure a new stop sign is what that intersection needed. Especially since the city closed Cherokee and Maine to through traffic at the railroad tracks. It gets harder and harder getting around this town. Pretty soon they'll be a stop sign on EVERY corner. Were there a large number of collisions? What do you think?

And while we are on useless traffic stops, can we remove the light on west Garriott in front of the old Wal Mart? What a colossal waste of time. There's no sense in trying to get food from Wendy's because you never get home with warm fries.

A New Era For Oakwood Country Club

(Click for a larger view)

Oakwood Country Club is about to begin a new era. It's out with the old clubhouse and in with the new. Oakwood will close the clubhouse doors on December 23 and will not open them again until June of 2010 when a new clubhouse is projected to be complete.

All golf, tennis and swimming activities will continue as usual at the club. The golf and tennis pro shops will remain open and operate as usual.

Dining for club members and catering events will be moved to Heritage Hills in the old Mickey's/Rooster in Wine location. The restaurant will not be open to the public but there will be outside events held at the location.

Club members agreed to an assessment to fund the new clubhouse and every penny will come from members. Oakwood not only attracts local families but is a vital factor in attracting new families and businesses to Enid. The club offers families and businesses from other cities the opportunity to play golf on one of the states top golf courses, indoor tennis year round and outdoor swimming in the summer.

Under the direction of Chef/Manager David North and the Oakwood board, Enid will have a brand new facility to be proud of.

You Can Hear The Thunder, But Do You See It?

...Thunder basketball that is. It looks like Enid is getting stiffed on viewing Thunder basketball games. Oklahoma now has a professional sports franchise and Enid won't be seeing any of the action.

With 74,000 Oklahoma customers, Suddenlink has decided not to carry the games. Suddenlink services Stillwater, Enid, Chickasha, Grove, Henryetta, Muskogee, Pauls Valley, Poteau, Purcell, Seminole and Woodward.

Suddenlink does not want to pay an additional fee to the network to carry the game package. The only way they will know that the package is valuable enough to carry is if enough customers call and voice their opinion.

So, if you want to see Thunder basketball in Enid, call Suddenlink and let them know your thoughts. 237-7373.

A Big Thank You To The Military!

Today is the 90th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Armistice Day began in 1926 to honor veterans from World War I, and was made a national holiday in 1938. Congress changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954.

Memorial Day is meant to honor members of the armed services who died serving their country. Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank living veterans who served during war or peace.

Enid Buzz would like to thank everyone that has served or is serving in the armed forces!
