Oxford Hotel Fire - Enid, OK - Updated
Here is the latest contribution for our Oxford fire photo collection. Thanks to Jo Aguirre. Here is another photo of the Oxford Hotel after the fire. The hotel burned on July 18th, 1978. Being a kid growing up in Enid in the 70's, I really only remember one thing about the Oxford Hotel. It burned down. I also remember that many of the plastic signs up to a block away melted due to the extreme heat. Here are a few great shots after the fire that destroyed the old Oxford building. Do you have any stories about the Oxford or the fire! Pictures courtesy of Michael E Riley
The adventures of Kealoha, an American Travelling Doll
We would like to thank Kenneth and Robin McDaniel for contributing this story which was first posted on the Vance web site. We hope you enjoy.
by Robin McDaniel 9/10/2008 - VANCE AIR FORCE BASE, Okla.
Military bases all over the world host hundreds of distinguished visitors every year, but this year some bases will be hosting a DV unlike any other. Her name is Kealoha, she is 18 inches tall and is an American Girl Travelling Doll.
Kealoha belongs to my daughter, Katherine McDaniel, age 7. Her father is Tech. Sgt. Kenneth McDaniel, assigned to the 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance AFB, Okla. Kealoha left Vance AFB last March on a trip that will last until the end of this year. By the time she returns she will have visited hosts in 12 states as well as England. Six of those hosts are fellow military families.
American Girl travelling dolls originated with the Society of American Girl Doll Collectors. The idea is simple. A collection of "hosts" welcome a doll as a guest in their home and community. The visiting doll takes part in daily family life - outings, dentist appointments, school, parties, etc. - which is documented with pictures and often commemorated with small souvenirs. At the end of her visit, usually about two weeks long, the doll is shipped on to the next host.

From Enid to Glory
Enid native, Don Haskins died Sept. 7 at his home in El Paso, Texas of congestive heart failure. He was 78. Haskins, a hard-nosed basketball coach made sports and civil rights history when, as coach of the Texas Western Miners, he led the first all-black starting lineup to the 1966 national championship. The Walt Disney movie, Glory Road, was based on the life of Don Haskins and was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Glory Road tells how the Texas Western University Miners literally changed the complexion of college basketball when it fielded an all-black starting squad during the 1966 national college championships against the all-white University of Kentucky Wildcats. The role of coach Don Haskins was played by Josh Lucas. Haskins graduated from Enid High School in 1948, earning All-Conference and All-State honors in basketball and baseball. He went on to become one of the top college basketball coaches in the country. He will be missed.
Troy Dunn - The Locator
Enid native Troy Dunn has a new show on TV! You can find his newest venture on WE TV doing a show called "The Locator." While Troy is helping people locate missing loved ones a TV crew captures him at work for the 10-episode series premiering on WE (channel 128 on Dish Network, 260 on Direct TV). Troy has located more than 40,000 men, women and children over the past 18 years. He graduated from Enid High School in 1985 and was a fullback on the Plainsmen's 1983 state championship football team. Enid High is where Troy met his wife, Jennifer and they have been together for 20 years. The Dunn's have family in Enid, Pawnee and Oklahoma City, and visit constantly just to get back to Oklahoma. Troy and his family, five sons and two daughters, now live in Florida but still like to call Oklahoma home. Troy has made more than 500 TV appearances on show like "Good Morning America," "60 Minutes," "Dr. Phil," "The View," "The Early Show" and "Oprah," to name a few. The Dunn family is a great product of Enid, Oklahoma and we're proud to see them doing so well. Visit Troy the Locator.

The calendars are now available and do include these two photos of Enid. Follow this link to see the other state photos and to order a calendar. Click on the thumbnail photos on their site to see the larger views. The snowy photo was taken in the early morning at Champlin Park.
