The Scarecrows are Coming, the Scarecrows are Coming!
This year there is hope the city of Enid will be covered with Scarecrows during the month of October! The planners of Enid's Scare on the Square would like as many scarecrows as possible be placed in front yards around town. A list of the scarecrows will be put together so people can drive by view them like they do Christmas lights. The more creative - the better! There will also be a photo gallery of each scarecrow on the SOTS website!
Prizes will be given to the best scarecrows! Please participate and help the scarecrows take over Enid!
The Scare on the Square also needs volunteers and donations to make it happen, so if you can help in that way, please contact Tammy Wilson - event coordinator.

President Nixon in Enid, Oklahoma
With all of this presidential stuff going on I got to thinking about the presidents I have seen in Enid. I saw President Nixon at Vance in 1974, President George H. Bush at Convention Hall in 1992 (I think) and I saw President George W. Bush's landing at Vance about two years ago.I've got a small collection of things from the Nixon visit. My great grandma was a huge Nixon fan and she waited 3 hours in the sun to see him. Here are a few things advertising his visit. I will post the photos over the next few days.
Were you there when President Nixon came to Enid?

Evolution of the Denny Price Enid YMCA
This photo shows houses sitting on the current location of the Denny Price Enid YMCA. Across the street is the just completed Champlin pool.
The "Y", as we like to call it, has come a long way baby and it is currently expanding again! The 7,400-square-foot project, will rearrange the Y's lobby, administrative offices and nursery. It will allow for a large expansion of the cardio, Cybex and free weight areas. The renovation will also create a teen fitness arcade that uses video technology to encourage teens to exercise.
YMCA volunteers have been raising money for about 18 months to pay for the expansion, which will cost nearly $2 million. The new construction should be completed by spring 2009 - the remodeling inside should be finished by fall 2009.
Watch the progress of the construction through eyes of Dale King. His photos and videos can be tracked on this Flickr page.

Good Ice! - Revisited

I first published this post in January of 2006 and it is still a big topic of conversations today. I thought I would revisit it along with the original comments...
What's your poison? Cubed, crushed, pellet, shaved, flake or nuggets? When it comes to ice in your drink there a multitude of options available. Almost every restaurant serves a different variety of ice. Did you know that there are folks like me that would drive a mile out of their way to get a drink with "good" ice?
I would like to state my favorite locations in Enid to get "good" ice. My favorite ice is what I call pellet ice. It's small cylinder looking ice pieces and is great for crunching. I currently get my ice every morning from the Holdings on the corner of Garriott and Hoover. I must warn you that not all of the Holdings have this ice, so beware!
The Sonics located on Garriott also have this style of "good" ice and are great if you just want to drive through for an ice run. Beware, the Sonics on Van Buren have a slightly different version of this ice. Golden Chick also has "good" pellet ice.
I hope I've helped out in some bizarre way. Let us know where you get your favorite "good" ice.

Enid High May Fete 1959?
We were lucky enough to be able to copy these photos for the website. They were in a packet with other photos dated 1959 so we'll assume this is the Enid High May Fete at Government Springs in 1959.
As you can see May Fete was a much bigger deal in the 50's. If you look closely at a few of the photos you will see there once was a fountain along the parade route. Another fact I just discovered is that the May Fete Court used to ride in boats through Government Springs! There is one photo showing the boats cruising towards the bridge. Click for larger photos.
Does any know the history or origins of Enid's annual May Fete parade?

Scare On The Square - 2008
Halloween in August? Well not exactly. But it's never to early to start planning for this years Scare on the Square. The crew from Scare on the Square is looking for businesses interested in manning a booth downtown to hand out candy. They are also looking for anyone that would be interested in being a sponsor.
Scare on the Square is put together with donations from the community and lots of elbow grease and they could use a lot of help! The annual event does not have a major sponsor so it depends on volunteers from the community.
There's still plenty of time to get your costumes and floats ready for the big parade. There's also talk of adding a town wide Scarecrow contest. Challenge your friends and neighbors to see who can build the best scarecrow.
This will be the 6th year for Scare on the Square - please help out so this fun event can continue for years to come.
Contact Tammy Wilson for more information.

Will Enid Be The Next Big Thing?
In an article uploaded to NewsOK.com it is speculated that the next economic development hot spot in Oklahoma just might be Enid. The article states that there's an effort under way to make Enid the state's third largest city. And it's all being masterminded by the folks at Continental Resources.
Continental Resources is a company on the move and has seen its growth skyrocket within the last few years. And because of this growth they are needing qualified staff to keep up with the technology that allows the company to discover new sources of oil. Continental is not only seeking visibility for itself, but also for Enid.
Having just created the state's newest billionaire, company officials want the world to know where Enid, OK, is. They want the world to know that small companies of any industry can come to Enid and flourish.
Because of the influx of these high-pay professionals, Enid will see the need for services such as fine dining, family activities and an increase in the building of larger homes.
Enid is prime for a growth spurt and should look for ways to attract this higher paying work force. Oakwood Country Club has taken a step in the right direction by developing a plan to tear down their old club in order to build a brand new up-to-date facility. These are the types of developments that will bring higher paid individuals to Enid which will in turn help market Enid as a progressive city.
With all of the controversy about cleaning up run down neighborhoods in Enid, maybe our City Fathers are smarter than you think they are.

Enid... A Scammers Paradise?
Come on Enid. I don't know why but the scammers are heavily targeting Enid and Central National Bank right now. The fact that these people continue these scams must lead us to believe that folks are falling for them. Here's some facts...
1. If it's too good to be true, it is!!
2. If a business contacts you for a password or pin over the phone or Internet, it's a scam!
Here's a fun email I just received this morning. It said the email was sent from Central National Bank of Enid:
Subject Line: Survey Congratulations!
Dear Customer of Central National Bank of Enid , (Um, how come they did not use my name? (clue, clue, clue!))
You've been selected to take part in our quick and easy 9 questions survey.
In return we will credit $99.99 to your account - Just for your time! (Um, too good to be true. (clue, clue, clue!))
Please spare two minutes of your time and take part in our online survey so we can improve our services.
Don't miss this chance to change something.

* For security reasons, we will record your ip address, the date and time.
* Deliberate wrong imputs are criminally pursued and indicted. (Yeah, whatever. Does that make a lick of sense? (clue, clue, clue!))
I did actually click on the link and a page matching the CNB site showed up. But if you look at the address bar you can see that it is not a CNB address. They had 9 quick questions and then wanted my debit card number, expiration date and pin. I tried to fill in a fake one but it would not let me.
There is also currently a cell phone scam going on. Enid Police have reported dozens of calls from people who received cellular phone text messages stating their Central National Bank account had been frozen and they give a number to call. Please look the CNB number up (233-3535) in the phone book and call them first.
Please people, think! If you don't feel right about something hang up or leave the Internet and call the actual number of your bank or business and ask them if they are needing your info.
On another note...
We are taking a survey and would love to hear what you think about Enid Buzz. We are paying $50 for every positive quote you send in.
