Enid Buzz In Vegas Baby!

Enid Buzz made a visit to Las Vegas this weekend and had a grand time. The photo above is my parting shot as we were taking off. This shows the Las Vegas Strip. The new end on the left is Mandalay Bay and the strip goes all the way to the right where the smaller group of buildings are, which is the old strip with casinos like the Golden Nugget. Click on the photo for a larger view.

My Enid story for the strip goes like this... We went shopping at The Forum in Caesars Palace. While in there we stopped at The Cheesecake Factory for some of their great iced tea. While sitting at the bar enjoying our tea the bartender asked us where we were from. There were two people behind the bar.

We of course said that we were from Enid, Oklahoma. The bartender then exclaims that the girl behind the bar is from Oklahoma! So he shouts at her and says, "Hey, these folks are from Enid, Oklahoma!" She in turn looks at us and says, "What? You didn't bring me a sugar cookie?" Without a pause I say, "No, we didn't bring any cookies from Katy's Pantry." She immediately cracks up and comes down to talk about her life in Alva and how she remembers coming to the Enid mall for Katy's sugar cookies.

During this visit we ran into Pete Rose at the mall, played blackjack with Ari Fleischer at The Venetian, watched the Goo-Goo Dolls, Sugar Ray and Josh Kelly at Mandalay Bay and spotted Harold Hamm walking down the strip.

A great time was had by all! Wish you could have been there.

Take Your Kid To Work Enid!

Today is the official "Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day". The program was founded to create an opportunity for girls and boys to share and communicate their expectations for the future.

Designed to be more than a career day, the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work program goes beyond the average "shadow" an adult. Exposing girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their lives do during the work day is important, but showing them the value of their education, helping them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life, providing them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and begin steps toward their end goals in a hands-on and interactive environment is key to their achieving success. Each year, development of new interactive activities and partnerships will assist us in taking girls and boys to the future they dream of.

All of you with OB/GYN exams today... watch out! There could be an extra set of ten year old eyes lurking about the exam table.

Boggy Creek running under Garriott near Ward Petroleum and McKeever Dentistry has turned green!

Is this a late St. Patrick's Day prank or an invasion of the body snatchers? Any clues?

Love To All Catholics And The Pope

Let me start out by saying I am not Catholic. With that said I'm wondering if even the Catholics thought there was a little too much Pope coverage. A visit from the Pope is great and many parts of the fanfare should be covered but having to watch every move he made started to look a little ridiculous.

As cool as the Popemobile is, watching it drive around in a circle for 20 minutes while a man waves at the crowd is not my idea of informative news coverage. Is there so much coverage because the media is waiting for something bad to happen and they do not want to be the one news station to not catch it live?

You know how the news media always has a crew on hand when the President takes off and lands, just in case of a great crash. That's the feeling I got while watching the Pope coverage.

I could be wrong and I'm very glad everything turned out well. All the best to the Pope.

Hey Enid! Who's Your Favorite Baseball Team?

Enid and EnidBuzz.com were recently mentioned on the world famous Royals Review - An Unofficial Kansas City Royals Blog. Enid was profiled as a Royals Radio affiliate. There are some interesting comments about Enid in the post.

After emailing back and forth with site owner Will McDonald I did a short Free Cartoon Baseball Clipartinterview and answered some questions he had about Enid. One of the main questions he and his fellow Royal fans had was, which major league baseball team Enid follows the closest.

I am now posing the question to all Enid baseball fans. Use the comment section below and let the rest of the country know if Enid follows the Royals, the Cardinals or the Rangers.

Enid Resident Crowned Mrs. Oklahoma America

Enid Buzz would like to congratulate Mrs. Allison Greco, just crowned Mrs. Oklahoma America 2008. Allison was crowned Mrs. Oklahoma 2008 at the Scottish Rite Theater in Guthrie, Oklahoma on Saturday night, April 12, 2008.

Allison is a native Oklahoman and currently resides in Enid with her husband, 2d Lt. Anthony Greco, a student pilot for the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Vance AFB.

A graduate and valedictorian of Sapulpa High School in 2002, Allison went on to excel in higher education when she graduated from the University of Oklahoma in May 2007 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and an MBA. She was Outstanding Senior in the College of Engineering for her excellence in academics and for her leadership in many university activities including serving as Chair of Relay For Life, Vice President of Chi Omega Sorority and Chair of the Engineering Leadership Roundtable. Allison is currently employed in the Engineering Maintenance Excellence Team at BNSF Railway.

Allison Greco is honored to represent Enid and Oklahoma in the Mrs. America 2008 pageant, which will be nationally televised in August. She feels that this title will open doors of opportunity to raise awareness for cancer advocacy, research and education. Allison lost her mother to colon cancer when she was 3 years old and wants to encourage others to join the fight against cancer.

She will be traveling the great state of Oklahoma making appearances, promoting the Mrs. Oklahoma America pageant and advancing her platform.

To schedule an appearance or for sponsorship information, please email tracy-crist@msn.com or call 785-539-5727. For more information visit www.mrsoklahomaamerica.com.

Happy Tax Day Enid!

It's April 15th and that means it's time to fork over your hard earned cash to the Federal Government. Are you trying to decide if you should report every little penny that you made? Have you reported your garage sale earnings? Your bingo winnings? Any prizes that you've won? Read this and see how motivated you are about filing your taxes this year...

Federal government employees spent millions of dollars of taxpayer money using their government purchase cards to pay for questionable items such as Internet dating services, Brooks Brothers suits, expensive steak dinners, personalized iPods, computers, and more, and much of the expensive electronic equipment has been lost or stolen, according to Congressional investigators.

It's fairly easy to misuse government purchase cards, which are like normal Visa and MasterCard credit cards, according to the Government Accountability Office. Investigators examined purchase card transactions made between July 2005 and June 2006 and estimated that for 41 percent of them, government cardholders did not follow proper procedures to prevent waste, fraud and abuse.

In one egregious case, a Forest Service employee wrote convenience checks to her boyfriend on her purchase card account, embezzling $642,000 over six years, according to a GAO report published Wednesday. The money "was used for personal expenditures, such as gambling, car loan and mortgage payments, and other retail purchases," according to the report.

And in many cases, things that weren't tied down simply disappeared. Investigators noted that government agencies were unable to locate 458 of 1,058 expensive and "easily pilferable" items, such as iPods, digital cameras, laptop computers, and sometimes even larger items, accounting for $1.8 million in missing merchandise from the $2.7 million sample. The largest was described as "256 items making up 16 server configurations, each of which cost nearly $100,000."

The report gave several more examples of improper, fraudulent or abusive transactions:

* A postmaster at USPS used his government purchase card to fraudulently subscribe to two Internet dating services over 15 consecutive months (April 2004 through October 2006). The monthly charges for these dating services were the only charges that appeared on the cardholders monthly statements during this period; yet each of these charges was authorized and paid for by USPS. The cardholder paid restitution of over $1,100 but faced no disciplinary action for this fraud.
* One USDA cardholder used year-end funds to acquire a Toyota Sienna and a Toyota Land Cruiser totaling nearly $80,000.
* USPS paid over $13,000 for 81 conference attendees to dine at an upscale steak restaurant in Orlando, Florida, in 2006. The dinner, which cost over $160 per person, included steaks, crab, appetizers, and over $3,000 in alcoholic beverages purchased over a 5-hour period. We define this transaction as abusive.
* At the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a cardholder used the government purchase card to acquire two 60GB iPods. Although NASA officials maintained that the iPods were essential for official data storage, we found that the cardholder personalized the iPods with the requester's and agency's names and used the iPods to store songs and music videos. Although the iPods had some business files on them, we concluded that the purchase was abusive because other data storage devices without video and audio capabilities were available at lower costs.

Now get out there and pay those taxes with a smile on your face.

I Didn't Know I Was So Well Traveled

Well, South Africa is a long way from Enid, Oklahoma. But it seems that while I wasn't paying a bit of attention I may have run down there and had a few swanky meals at a place called the Inanda Club.

While preparing for the dreaded tax deadline my wife decided to look over a few of our credit card statements. To her amazement it showed that we had spent two nights dining in South Africa to the tune of $650! Wow! Who knew?

The sad part of this story is that we haven't been to South Africa and in my busy state of affairs I had paid the bill without even noticing the charges! This is a warning to everyone, even us small town folk in Enid, Oklahoma.

Identity theft and credit card fraud are much bigger than many may realize. Unfortunately this was not our first fraudulent credit card charge either. If you pay your statement in full when it comes due, like myself, be sure and look over all charges before you send that payment. It is easy enough to get the charge credited back but you will need to call your credit card company for details.

Let this be a warning! Although Enid is a really safe town we are not immune from the high tech bandits. This person was not a high school kid in a back room, this was a high rolling individual or group that is living the lap of luxury.

So check your statements and see if you might have joined us for a grand time at the Inanda Club.
