Happy Easter Enid!

It's Easter! We hope the Easter Bunny came to your house and left you something sweet. Enjoy church and egg hunting today.

This is the first year since 1913 that Easter showed up so early.

Easter in the western world is generally celebrated in April, but there are the unusual years, like this one, when it occurs in March.

Easter is a movable feast tied to the cycles of the moon. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full paschal moon, which appeared Thursday.

No one alive today will be around to see that happen again. The next time Easter Sunday will come so early in March will be 2228.

The last time it fell on a March 23 was 95 years ago.

Until 325 AD, Easter coincided with the Jewish festival of Passover. But that year, bishops at the First Council of the Christian church meeting in Nicaea decreed that the feast be celebrated on the first Sunday after the paschal or spring moon.

It's An Easter Weekend Enid!

Good Friday Enid!

Don't forget that this is Easter weekend and the end of Spring Break. Get out and enjoy the church activities going on and the abundant Easter Egg Hunts around town.

Enid Buzz highly recommends you take the kids to see Horton Hears A Who!. This great adaption of the Dr. Seuss book is fun and has some great life lessons. If you were turned off by The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat please go see this movie. It is completely different and worth the money to see on the big screen. Jim Carry is kept somewhat in check and does not deviate into his rather weird, long running "wig outs" as he plays the voice of Horton. Carol Burnett is great as the kangaroo voice and Charles Osgood does a fine job of narrating.

And don't forget to get out and test Enid's top 4 burger joints. Vote, vote, vote!

Greater Enid Young Professionals

The Greater Enid Young Professionals, a chamber sponsored group, had their first meeting on Feb 26, 2008 with an outstanding turnout. The meetings will continue every 4th Tuesday. Upcoming meetings will be March 25, 2008 at 5:30-7 at Panevino and April 22, 2008 at 5:30 at Callahan's. The link below has a white paper detailing why young professional groups are critical to growing communities. For information concerning the group, please contact the Enid Chamber or Cara Evans at 580-748-2088 or cara.evans@encompassfsi.com. YPO White Paper.

Cara Evans took the time to answer a few questions we had about the Enid YPO. These answers might help if you are wondering whether you should attend a meeting.

The Enid YPO is a Chamber sponsored group, what does the Enid Chamber feel a YPO can bring to our city?
I think that this group is viewed as a representative sampling of our most successful and progressive individuals. The organization can be used as both a recruiting and retention tool to employers in the area.

What is your experience with a YPO and are you leading the Enid organization?
While in Tulsa, I was a member of TYPros (www.typros.org ) and held a position on the marketing work crew. In Enid, I am working with Jon Blankenship and Jimmy Stallings to get our group up and running. We do not have an executive leadership team in place yet, but will define those people in an upcoming meeting. At present, we are trying to build momentum and really get a steady attendance built up.

What qualifications or experience do you need to be a member of a YPO?
You need to be entrepreneurial, focused on making Enid great and have a positive and proactive outlook on both a professional and civic level. It is not restricted to certain professions and we welcome most anyone.

The name suggests young professionals, is there an age limit?
There is not an age limit. We target ages 25-35, but are not exclusive.

What types of individuals is the Enid YPO looking for?
Those who want to network, are proud of Enid and looking to make an impact on the community.

What do you talk about at the YPO meetings?
At present, we are holding networking functions. There is not a formal program - conversation occurs amongst members and really serves to allow the next generation of leadership to build relationships. As we grow, we will institute committees and perhaps a quarterly educational program on topics such as the state of the city, economic development, work force development, etc. These will most likely take the form of a roundtable or keynote.

Does everyone have to talk or can you just listen?
It's your choice. We allow our membership to participate on whatever level fits his/her personal objectives.

Other than monthly meetings will there be other YPO activities?
Definitely in the future. In the mean time, we encourage our membership to attend community wide events and chamber sponsored events.

What benefits would I gain from attending an Enid YPO meeting?
You might learn about a business opportunity, meet a new friend, discover something new about Enid or experience an outlet to spend quality time in a casual atmosphere with your peers.

Also, membership is free and participants really have the freedom to become as involved as they want to be. Our meetings are the 4th Tuesday of every month.

Enid Buzz would like to thank Cara for taking the time to answer these questions.

Playing Under Van Buren

Have you noticed the construction going on at the corner of Van Buren and Garriott? It's really hard to miss. As I was driving by the other day I caught a glimpse of the huge hole they had dug on the northeast corner of the intersection. They were replacing those large square and round concrete pieces, that when put together, form an underground drainage system.

It only took a second to realize they were digging up one of my old stomping grounds. Back in the day, the thing to do was to walk the middle of Boggy Creek looking for tadpoles. We would follow the creek all around Indian Hills and always found it fun to hang out under the bridges.

Across from the Champlin Mansion and next to the apartments the creek finds it's way under Garriott. Have you ever wondered where the creek goes from there? We did. My buddies and I would follow the creek under Garriott and dare each other to go as far as we could.

The beginning of the drainage area is large enough that eleven and twelve year olds can just walk right in and with a little stooping can walk almost all the way underground to Van Buren. I remember going as deep as we could, sometimes running into large round drainage areas. For some reason we named one area "Spider Tunnel". My best guess is that we ended up near Van Buren before we would stop. We could hear heavy traffic coming from the little drainage areas along the corners of the streets.

We didn't spend a large amount of time in the tunnels but thinking back it seems like we did. What might have been a 20 minute trip into the tunnel is now remembered as an entire day of treasure hunting and adventure. It's funny how the simple things we did as kids are the things we remember the best and the most vividly.

Those days, running around Enid without much worry, are the memories that I will never forget. And even though I'm only best friends with one of those guys today, that group of friends will always be my best set of friends. I've long forgotten that we slowly drifted apart and think of us as the best of friends even today.

It was great to finally get to see where our old "Spider Tunnel" really was and know that as kids we used to listen to ours moms and didn't play in the street... we played under the street.

Enid YWCA kicks off sponsorship drive

The YWCA kicked off its annual sponsorship drive this month with a goal of raising $30,000, and doubling the total number of sponsors.

Held each year in March, the sponsorship drive allows the YWCA to continue to provide free emergency services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and quality youth enrichment events such as the annual Girl Power Rally and Children's Christmas Sale.

Enid's YWCA has a long history in Enid, beginning in the 1920s when the organization provided the first employment services for women and Enid's first interracial programs. In 1979, the organization opened Option House, a shelter for battered women and their children, after employees saw a need in Garfield County for emergency domestic violence services.

The YWCA is also one of the founding members of the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

The sponsorship drive will continue through March. For information about becoming a sponsor, call (580) 234-7581. The YWCA is located at 525 S. Quincy, across the street from Bass Hospital.

Congressional Order of Merit Winner in Enid

Wow! Imagine my surprise when I returned from lunch to find a recording telling me I have been selected as a Congressional Order of Merit winner as a business owner in Oklahoma. The message also stated that Tom Cole had selected me and I needed to return the call as soon as possible.

Gosh, what an honor. I'm not sure if Enid has ever had a Congressional Order of Merit winner.

Of course I immediately picked up my phone and checked the caller ID. The number was listed as out of area rather than Tom Cole's office. Instantly, the Google blood in me started to kick in at this point. So, before returning the phone call, I entered "Congressional Order of Merit" into Google and waited .016 seconds for the results.

Well, I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed to find out that there were a few other people that had been honored with the Congressional Order of Merit. A few thousand others!

Seems like the National Republican Congressional Committee is using this lame brain tactic to get money to fight old Nancy Pelosi. I'm not sure if I should be mad, feel cheated or should be celebrating the fact that the NRCC has a sneaky way of raising money.

Anyway, after reading several posts about how other people had called the number I decided to call it myself. A friendly lady answered and almost immediately wanted me to listen to a recording by Tom Cole. The message rambled on about how Nancy Pelosi was going to raise taxes and doom small business owners, which she most likely will.

After the message I was asked if I wanted to be on the Business Advisory Council. Now, if I had not done a bit of Googling I might have been tickled beyond belief at this point. A Merit honor AND a spot on the BA Council! It just doesn't get much better than that for a cartoonist from Enid, Oklahoma.

Of course knowing that I was about to be hit up for some dough I said SURE! Put me down. I was then asked if I wanted to be listed in a full page Wall Street Journal ad standing with the NRCC. It would only cost me $500 and they would send me a framed copy of the ad. Wow! I said nope. They asked if I would donate $300, nope I said, how about $200, nope I said again, what about $100 they asked, nope, nope, nope. I did say that I would gladly be on the council and I was directed to go to a web site for more information. Here is the site:

http://www.businessadvisorycouncil.org/info/

I asked who made up this Merit and if it was a government award. She said it was not, that it was created by the NRCC. Then she quickly rattled off something about this not being authorized by any candidate's committee. I asked what that meant and she repeated it and said it was not authorized by any Congressional committee. By then I was pretty much done trying to understand what was going on.

After I hung up I realized she never asked for my address so that they could send me my Congressional Order of Merit. Oh well, easy come, easy go. If you would like to join in on the fun give them a shout at 1-877-829-4742. Tell them Curtis sent you.

Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad

According to KGWA radio reports it looks as though we have two props that have passed and one that has failed.

Proposition 1, dealing with street and intersection construction has failed. This prop generated the most controversy due to the opposition to widening Randolph Street.

Proposition 2, has passed and Enid will be getting it's much needed bridge repairs.

Proposition 3, the plan to continue a 1-cent sales tax passed. Enid can now build a new sewer treatment plant and do other city projects.

Way to go Enid! The polling places looked busy and Enid should be proud that there was a good voter turnout.

Now I just have one request. If you are going to drive 20 mph please drive down Broadway and not Randolph!! PLEASE!

Monday, March 03, 2008

Vote Enid

Please get out and vote on Tuesday, March 4 and exercise your rights. Both sides will need every vote in this important election.

We encourage everyone to vote YES on the sales tax extension and the propositions for bridges and roads.

*******************

On another subject, don't forget to try out Enid's top four burger makers. We will be putting the distinction of Enid's Best Burger to a vote very soon. We would like all of those thinking of voting to get out and taste a burger from all four locations. Enid's top 4 burger stops are:

Pak-a-Sak - 429 E. Maine
Lot-a-Burger - 310 W. Willow
Lenox - 1110 N. Grand
Flamingo - 520 S. Van Buren
