Happy Leap Day Enid!
Today is February 29 a day that only comes along every four years (with an exception of three times every 400 years). Get out today and do something special that you normally wouldn't do. Use this extra 24 hours to do something fun, take the day off or start something you haven't had time to do. It's a free day! Use it wisely. Might we suggest that you go out and sample a hamburger today and report back to us for our Best Burger in Enid investigation. Our leaders for the vote so far are: (in no particular order) Lotta-Burger, Pak-a-Sak, Flamingo and Lenox. Stay tuned as we test each burger and bring our findings to a vote of the people.
Up with People Needs Enid Host Families
The multi-cultural organization, Up with People, a global education program for young adults, is coming to Enid. While giving to communities through its community impact activities and shows, the program also addresses the real need to help young adults gain a global perspective, intercultural understanding, knowledge of worldwide issues, leadership skills and a sense of social responsibility. The cast members live with local families wherever they travel as part of the cultural immersion for which the group is known. For their stay in Enid, Up with People needs families that are able to provide a bed, meals and limited transportation for their four-day stay. The participants, who come from 27 different countries, will be involved in community impact projects and service learning during their visit. The cast of young people will also be performing the "Up with People Show", a community celebration that features original and international songs and uses the universal languages of music and dance to inspire, energize and educate. Their visit is made possible by the following sponsors: Enid Realty Group, PT Coupling, Continental Resources and Ward Petroleum Corporation & INTEGRIS Bass Baptist Health Center. All proceeds from the Up with People show will go directly to Leonardo's Discovery Warehouse & Adventure Quest. WHEN: Up with People will be in Enid from March 13 to March 17. The show will be on March 14 at The Briggs Auditorium at Northern Oklahoma College starting at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for students/seniors and $15 general admission. HOW: If you're interested in becoming a host family or for more information, please contact Ryan Watterson at 262-442-6721 or rwatterson@upwithpeople.orgWHY: Up with People provides young adults an international and intercultural experience that teaches servant leadership and uses the performing arts to deliver messages of hope and goodwill throughout the world. Up with People exists today to spark people to action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries and the world while building bridges of understanding as a foundation for world peace. Vote Yes on March 4
A yes on vote on March 4 is a yes vote to improve Enid and help Enid grow. There really is no dispute as to whether Enid needs new bridges and a new sewage treatment plant. These two initiatives alone will help improve the quality of life and assure Enid of future growth. Other improvements can be debated but in the long run will eventually need to be completed if Enid intends on growing and attracting new businesses and citizens to town. Better streets, intersections and city buildings only help improve the quality of life for everyone. Flood control, sewer improvements and additional outdoor pathways also contribute to a better quality of life in Enid. The loudest and almost only dispute being raised is whether Randolph should be widened. You would know the answer to that if you've ever driven down Randolph and been stuck behind one of the many Sunday drivers that believes the speed limit is 20 mph because the road is narrow and you cannot see cars pulling out into the intersections until you are about to hit them. Unfortunately for those opposed to the Randolph widening there is no counter argument. They say use Chestnut. Chestnut disappears into the grain elevators at Van Buren in case you've never driven it. They also say look at Broadway it is already four-lanes. Well, not quite. If you drive Broadway you'll notice it is not ALL four lane and much like Chestnut, IT DOES NOT GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH TOWN. Broadway also goes through school zones, downtown and neighborhoods. Widening Randolph will ease crosstown traffic because people will be using it to avoid the congestion on Garriott. If we want the population to grow we need to think about increased traffic in the future and how to prepare for it now! The 17% increase in our property tax is a fair way to raise the money to pay for roads we all use. Enid citizens learned how to cope with the addition of their cable bill, their new multiple cell phone bills and their internet bill. They should be able to find a way to come up with a few extra dollars a month to help pay to improve our city. Every Enid citizen is encouraged to voice an opinion and get out to vote no matter what side of the issue you are on. Those residents living along Randolph do have legitimate concerns about their property and each case should be heard and each concern should be addressed.
Fellow Enid Grad Singing O-S-C-A-R
O-S-C-A-R won't be spelling bologna tonight. The Academy Awards will be presenting Oscar live beginning at 7:30 p.m. tonight on KOCO, Channel 5. Do we really care about who is wearing what and who shows up with who? Not really. Are we tired of reading gossip and police reports about these overpaid celebs? Probably. Are we going to watch the Oscars to see famous actors? No. We'll be watching to see my fellow 1981 Enid High classmate, Jenny Fowler Graham, perform live during the show!
You should be able to spot Jenny during the song, "That's How You Know," from "Enchanted".
Good Luck Jenny! Enid will be watching!

Mrs. Enid Ready To Compete
A local volunteer will represent Enid in competing for the title of Mrs. Oklahoma America on April 12, 2008 at the Guthrie Scottish Rite Temple in Guthrie, OK. Allison Greco, a committed volunteer and wife, was chosen to compete for the title of Mrs. Oklahoma America from a field of applicants throughout the area. Allison's dedication to fundraising and to volunteering for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life was significant in her being chosen for the title of Mrs. Enid. In May, Allison graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and an MBA. She was selected as the Outstanding Senior in the College of Engineering for her excellence in academics and for her leadership in many university activities including serving as Vice President of Chi Omega Sorority and Chair of the Engineering Leadership Roundtable. Allison is employed in the Engineering Department at BNSF Railway in Enid. Allison's husband, 2d Lt. Anthony Greco, a student pilot for the U.S. Air Force stationed at Vance AFB, is extremely proud of her. In addition to being a committed military wife and volunteer, Allison enjoys exercising, watching college football, public speaking and attending the performing arts. Allison will compete in three categories for the Mrs. Oklahoma title: personal interview, swimsuit and evening gown. Contestants for the Mrs. Oklahoma America Pageant must be married and live in the city or county they represent. The winner will receive a prize package worth thousands of dollars and will go on to compete for the title of Mrs. America next September in Tucson, AZ. The Mrs. America Pageant is the only nationally televised pageant for married women in the country. To schedule an appearance or for sponsorship information, please email allisonagreco@gmail.com or visit the Mrs. Oklahoma America website at www.mrsoklahomaamerica.com .
Enid Resident Makes A Splash At Will Rogers
Have you ever had one of those days? We almost hate to even mention this story on the blog but since it was splashed all over the TV this week we thought we could mention it. Enid resident Marci Price was on her way through Will Rogers World Airport when she had to make a quick pit stop. That quick stop ultimately turned into more than she had bargained for. While in the bathroom Marci lost a special Valentine's Day gift from her husband, NBA star Brent Price, minutes before she was supposed to board a plane. The diamond bracelet she was wearing ended up making a big splash by finding its way down the toidy. Because of her background in the plumbing industry, Marci knew that the bracelet could be recovered and went to find help. After a small panic at Will Rogers World Airport, two maintenance workers helped Marci get her gift back. View more on the story here.

Enid Firefighter A Shining Light

Enid has at least one firefighter with that good old entrepreneurial spirit. Darrell Wanzer has created what he refers to as the best inboard firefighter helmet light on the market today.
The Inboard Helmet Light was designed by this 18 year veteran of the Enid, OK Fire Department. Darrell was looking for a better, safer way to mount his flashlight onto his helmet. Through trial and error this current design was created and has turned this desire of a better bracket into a family owned business. It wasn't long before the entire Suppression Division of the Enid Fire Department was outfitted with Inboard lights. Now, it's being made available to firefighters everywhere. Help spread the word and ensure that all firefighters have the safest equipment available. Visit their website today.

Enid has "The Big Idea"
Are you a fan of the show, The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch? ( The Big Idea Web Site) If not, check it out. It's a show about how to become an entrepreneur and showcases several entrepreneurs each episode. Show times are 9 pm and 12 am each night on CNBC (Channel 55 on Suddenlink). If you are a big fan, did you know that Enid has been making a big splash on the show? Just last week on the January 30th episode, Enid's own Troy Dunn was showcased for his book on creating young entrepreneurs called Young Bucks. We profiled Troy on our blog a few months ago and actually just stayed at his home on our trip to Disney World. ( Troy's Web Site) On that same January 30th episode a new company was also profiled. The company is called Boogie Wipes. It just so happens that yours truly (me DBA The Curtoons Cartoon Company) created the logo, characters and packaging featured as part of the segment. I am aslo currently creating a second logo for the company. ( Boogie Wipes Web Site) Meanwhile, another Enid resident we have featured on this blog is about to hit The Big Idea. Carlotta Lennox will be touting her doggie vending machine business, Hey Buddy. Carlotta also contacted The Curtoons Cartoon Company about creating a cartoon character for her franchise side of the business. ( Hey Buddy Web Site) What does all this mean? It means Enid is creating movers and shakers in the entrepreneur world. It means there is no reason you cannot start your own business. It means I should start looking into making an appearance on The Big Idea myself. ( Curtoons Web Site)
