I found my Enid connection at the KC airport. I ran into a classmate of mine from EHS named Kevin Peterson. Kevin lives in OKC now and works for Advance Foods. On to Orlando!
Enid Buzz Family Vacation Day 1
Well, here we sit at the airport in Kansas City on our way to Orlando. Our plane was delayed due to thunderstorms in the Houston area this morning. I've been looking around for an Enid connection because we always seem to run into someone from Enid on our travels.
I spotted few Enid people at the airport in OKC and even saw one of the girls assistant teachers. If I find an Enid connection here I'll let you know.
Weather in KC is gray and cloudy but no snow. We'll report from Orlando unless something fun happens.
Hope the weather is good in Enid.

That Good Old Enid Weather
If you are checking in and do not live in Enid or have not lived in Enid for a period of time you may need a reminder of how fun the weather can be around here. On Tuesday we were warm and closing in on temps in the 60's. Today we'll be in the low 40's with 15-25 mile an hour wind and Thursday we are expecting snow!!
Here is how morning temps went in Enid today. I left the house at 7:15 am to run an errand. The temperature was 52 degrees and I felt almost a little warm being in a sweater. 5 minutes later a very strong wind came up as I was driving. I ran my errand and ten minutes after I left the house the temperature had fallen to 41 degrees. I left the house for a second errand one hour later and the temperature was 31 degrees! A 20 degree drop in less than an hour.
Well, as they say in Oklahoma, if you don't like the weather right now... wait a minute.
Of course today is trash day in our west side neighborhood, which is to bad because all of our trash is now been blown over to the east side. Here is what you might have seen had you been driving around this morning. I was attacked by these two pizza boxes as I drove through Indian Hills. Be on the lookout for these two desperado's. They should be somewhere near Covington by now.

The Enid Rumor Mill

It's time to spin the old Enid rumor mill again. Sounds like a Buffalo Wild Wings is in the works and now we're hearing stories of a Marble Slab coming to Enid!
Do you have more info on these two stories or even better scoop than that? Let us know! Juicy gossip always welcome.
Having more franchise businesses coming to Enid made me think about the many more recent franchise businesses that have already come and gone in Enid.
Remember these more recent franchise stores: Gap, Dairy Queen, What-A-Burger, The Kettle, Johnny's Burgers, Red Lobster, Eckerds, Midas, Baskin Robbins, TCBY, Goldies, Furr's, Grandy's, Pizza Inn and Schlotzky's. And now we can add Goody's to the list as they will be closing in March '08.
Do you remember any?

Do you remember the Oxford Hotel on Grand?
I remember when it burned down. It melted the sign at the

Enid Speakers of the Plains Toastmasters Club
There are many good reasons why Toastmasters teaches both communication and leadership skills. People with good communication skills are more likely to be promoted to leadership positions, and good leaders need communication skills to be effective.
In other words, if you want to be a leader, you have to learn to speak like a leader. And Toastmasters is here to help.
"Stephan Van Coppenole has been elected as president of the Toastmasters club in Enid for 2008". Members meet weekly and give either prepared or impromptu speeches as well as practice different leadership roles during the meeting. Toastmasters meet weekly, on Thursday at 7 P.M. in the Choices Institute Bldg. on 521 North Grand Ave, Enid, OK. "Guests are always welcomed."
Stop by tonight and see what it is all about!

Enid - Home to KOCO
On July 2, 1954, the only full-power VHF station in northern Oklahoma opened in Enid. KGEO was the station and it survived in Enid for four years before its transmitter and studio location were moved to Oklahoma City in 1958. The station was then changed to KOCO.
KOCO had been the only local television station in Oklahoma that operated and maintained a bureau office elsewhere in the state. For several years after its move from Enid to Oklahoma City, KOCO also operated a second bureau in Enid; but it was closed by KOCO in the mid-1990s for unknown reasons.
Speaking of KGEO, does anyone remember the Popeye cartoon show starring the captain of the good ship "K-George"?

Enid Schools Out On MLK Day

On Monday, January 21st, Americans will celebrate the life of an African-American and civil rights pioneer, Martin Luther King, Junior on the U.S. holiday commemorating his birth. King's actual birthday is January 15th.
King was a key figure in bringing about change at a time when much of the American South was still segregated - and millions of African-Americans faced discrimination, violence and intimidation.

102 Happy Birthday's
Not many of us will ever get the chance to celebrate our 102nd birthday. One of Enid's oldest citizens, if not its oldest, is turning 102 today.
Lillian Evans was born on January 18, 1906. She is the wife of Wilfred Evans and mother of Jim Evans. Their family began and has owned Evans Drug since 1897. Lillian has 18 grandchildren and over 30 great-grandchildren.
Do you know someone in Enid turning 100 years old or older? Let us know! We'd love to help celebrate such a great milestone.

History of an Enid Building

This building, located at the corner of Maple and Jefferson was dedicated in 1924 as the First Evangelical United Brethren Church.
On February 23, 1951 the church was almost completely destroyed by fire. In October of 1953 a newly repaired church building was dedicated. The former church was converted to an education wing. The church continued to thrive and in fact was the largest and most successful EUB church in Oklahoma.
In 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist Church merged creating the United Methodist Church. This placed First EUB, renamed Central UMC in 1968, just one block from Enid First UMC. So in 1982 plans were made to relocate the church to the present location which is now Willow View United Methodist Church.
The building later became the home of Cimarron Montessori School which it continues to be today. Cimarron is a non-profit board-run school which has a toddler program, two primary programs and a combined elementary program serving kids from 2 to 12 years old.

Enid SPCA Has A New Home
After months of planning and construction, Enid's new animal shelter is now open.
The new building, located at 1116 Overland Trail, is Phase I of a two-phase project. The SPCA now has a health clinic and surgical facility, as well as feline rooms. They are currently setting up a small outside exercise area for their dogs until they have funding for building a canine facility.
In the lobby is a small pet supply shop, which they have named Angie's Pet Plaza, in memory of Angela Faulkner. The shop carries Nutro food products, like Natural Choice premium dog and cat foods. In addition, they will carry start-up animal supplies and specialty pet products, and they hope to add a groomer in the near future. When you shop at Angie's Pet Plaza, your purchases support the work of the Enid SPCA.
The SPCA was short on donations in 2007 and the shelter experienced a 25 percent increase in construction costs. Eventually they would like to add a barn and a horse rescue area.
The SPCA expects the shelter to cost about $200,000 and said it is about 75 percent funded. For information on the shelter or to donate, call 233-1325 and ask for Gabriella Wilson or Vickie Fox.

Happy Birthday Elvis!
In honor of the King's birthday I thought I would pull out my one connection with Elvis. This single strand of green shag carpet was plucked directly from the jungle room and was smuggled back to Enid, Oklahoma. Can you feel the energy? If you feel the need to be close to Elvis, know that a part of Graceland now resides in Enid. I do what I can.
Now let's see, where did I put that book of secrets I found at the White House?

Enid Traditions and Rituals
I was thinking today about some of the old family traditions and rituals I remember growing up as a kid in Enid and what traditions my daughters will remember once they are grown up and gone.
Of course I'll always remember shopping downtown on Crazy Day. People dressed in wacky costumes selling cheap merchandise on the sidewalk. Going from Coldirons, to Sears, to Evans, stopping by Down's Pharmacy and then on to Anthony's and Newmans. And if I really did some begging I got to go to Baker's Pawn Shop to look for comics. Then there's Tri-State and the carnival rides located between the post office and court house on Broadway. I'll never forget the smells of the funnel cakes, hot dogs and cotton candy.
Other traditions I think about were the times around Christmas when my family would all meet at Richill's, downtown, for my birthday and we would have enough people to sit in the "round" room. I still remember many of the food items served up everyday. In the summer there was the ritual of playing outside, even after dark, and riding all over town on our bikes without a worry in the world. There was the ritual of my mom taking us to Somewhere Drive In on Maple and Van Buren so we could get drinks with "good ice" and then heading to the Gaslight Theatre so she could help with the sets. I knew every nook and cranny in the old Gaslight location.
Today, we are passing along our own yearly Enid traditions which include picking out a live Christmas tree at the tree lot on west Garriott, watching our girls pick their own pumpkins from the Pumpkin Patch on Randolph and getting together with friends to watch fireworks in July. We also have our own little rituals which include a dad and daughter lunch at Oakwood every Friday, renting movies together from Hastings nearly every weekend and getting "good ice" from the Holdings on Garriott.
I hope my girls remember and appreciate the traditions that can be found in Enid, I know I do. What traditions do you think about or remember from living in Enid?
Comments are welcome.
