The Enid Municipal Zoo
(click photo for a larger view)One of the things I remember about Enid as a kid was throwing peanuts into the monkey pit at the zoo. I've been asking for anyone with a photo of the zoo to send it in, without much luck I might add.
Recently Gary L. Brown has also started investigating the history of what was once called the Grady Brock Zoo. EnidHistory.org has compiled a small amount of information along with the photo above and is now researching a scrapbook of a long time Park Superintendent for Enid.
The zoo was located near Government Springs where the Cherokee Strip Museum is being built and was open for 20 years. The zoo was closed in 1972.
If you have photos, stories or information about the zoo please contact us and Gary L. Brown at EnidHistory.org.

Thanks for the picture. I can never find anyone not related to me that remembers the zoo. I'd almost began to believe that I'd dreamt the whole place up!
Hey Rhonda, I remember. Especially how the monkeys were always picking at each other. It was kind of fun watching the animals and although the zoo wasn't really much, there seemed to always be someone there.
I remember the Zoo. I always felt sorry for the animals for some reason. I think they didn't get the best of care, especially towards the end. Yes the monkeys were always picking at each other. LOL I seem to remember a bear also, and there was a little pony too with overgrown hooves.
I remember the bear always seemed very sad. I felt, too, that it wasn't the nicest place towards the end. My mom and I used to go out there together.
I remember the zoo and went to it many times in the 60's. It was a sad place and felt sorry for the animals. The lion was all matted and sad looking. But as a kid, it was something to see. Glad they closed it down.
