Rotten Neighbors In Enid

(Home for sale on West Broadway. High grass, overgrown bushes,
broken windows, broken railing, losing paint...)
Time for an Enid Buzz Rant...
Seems like there's a lot of talk about trashy neighbors and cleaning up Enid. I'm not exactly sure what the controversy is about. Why would anyone not want a clean neighborhood and a better looking Enid? Oh, I forgot, there are those folks in Enid like my ex-neighbors from several years back.
Let's see, we lived next door to each other in a very west side addition with nice homes and clean yards. These neighbors, not poor, were dirty, stinkin, nasty people. That's it. They just didn't care one iota about being clean, looking good or what anyone else thought. Sure it's a free country but not when your nasty habits affect my life.
You see, these neighbors had six dogs. They kept three very large dogs in the bag yard. They went one summer without ever cutting the backyard grass. These dogs only had a path around the edges of the fence to walk. The swing set was buried in grass and their daughter could not have used a machete to find her way through even if she had wanted to. They also kept three little dogs inside their very stinky house. Because of the dogs in back they erected a wire fence in the front yard right next to our bedroom window.
Needles to say, every time they would let these yapping banshee's outside at 5:30 a.m. they would wake us up. They only mowed their front yard about once every six weeks. We actually had a neighbor across the street mow their lawn one day because he was tired of looking at the knee high grass.
Now why should I care about lazy slobs like this? Because their nasty, uncivilized behavior caused our yard to become infested with fleas, ticks and mice. Their screeching dogs woke us up nearly every morning. Calling the city didn't help much because the dogs had to be outside screeching for them to get ticketed and the dogs normally stayed inside the pee infested house.
Did we invite many people over to our house? No. Did we enjoy coming home and making our yard look good? No. Did we move out of the neighborhood as quick as we could? YES! Listen, if you want to complain that it is your right to live like a pig that's fine. Just don't do it next to my house. You all find a nice rat infested neighborhood, park your cars in the yard and move in together.
I found a great site to help Enid with it's trashy people problem. If your neighbor is a lazy slob report them to this site. If you are looking for a place to live check out the site and avoid the areas with the "problem" citizens. This site also gives the location of sex offenders.

I sure hope someone buys that beautiful old home, and fixes it up! And I agree with you on everything else you said. People need to take pride in their home.
While I agree with your point about keeping the neighborhood cleaned up, I think it's crazy that the City of Enid wants to turn off people's water who don't clean up their properties. I don't see how that's going to help them clean up? Makes me glad I don't live in Enid anymore.
I'm sure the City of Enid would love to hear what the best solution to the problem would be. If not fines and cutting off water, then what? Why have a clean up plan but not enforce it?
My old neighbors were disgusting and I was almost powerless to do anything about the problem. The only solution that worked was for me to move. Should everyone have to move because their neighbors are slobs?
I understand there are elderly and disabled which I hope would not be fined if they would communicate with the City. But should their yards become public hazards and eye sores just because they can't keep them up?
How about forming a group of kid volunteers or kids in trouble and having them clean up the yards of those unable. Everyone else can just live without their water!
I didn't disagree about the fines, just about the water. If someone pays their water bill, they shouldn't have to worry about it being cut off, no matter what kind of conditions they live in. As for the rest of it, I agree with your ideas. I think they're great. I just think it's sad that they even have to resort to this kind of stuff to try and get people to keep their property in decent shape.
I agree! Thanks for the comments.
How about the city themselves? Should they not be accountable for their own property? I know of very few people that are against the cleanup itself. They are against inconsistency in code enforcement. Creating new health hazards is not the way to prevent what you already perceive to be health hazards.
Nobody likes trashy neighbors, loud dogs, toilets in front yards, etc. I agree with the overall sentiment here that people should have a bit more pride in themselves and take care of their stuff.
I lived in Enid for many years. I left in 2003 to work for Plano, Texas in their Code Enforcement Department. I handled these very same issues in my capacity with Plano. I have contacted a few of Enids top city officals to help them impliment a effective code enforcement department. They turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to me.
Until you make EVERYONE play by the same rules, you will have ugly spots in Enid.
The fines for grass in excess of 12" in Plano is $350!! $50 to the contractor that mows the property, the other $300 in the citys general fund. It made a lot of money for Plano( they bought hybrid cars from the general fund) and keeps up property values at the same time.
Make some noise as citizens!! Call the newspaper, call the OKC t.v. stations and get the word out that Enid needs to clean itself up!!
