I loved going to the movies at the Esquire - too many to remember! I have lots of memories of going there with my cousins when I was a kid and going there on dates with my future husband in high school. I think we actually skipped out on our senior prom to go see "Little Fauss and Big Halsy" at the Esquire. (How many people remember THAT movie?!?!?)
Remeber the "Free Show" at the Esquire on Saturday mornings?
I worked as ticket taker at the Esquire, Chief, Trail and Enid Drive Inn during Jr. High. A lof of fun.
The Esquire was an actual "movie palace" en minerateure. It had a night-sky dome, beautiful stainglass waterfall lights and recessed ceiling lights under the balcony...some of which made their way into RichHills cafeteria next door. I am a member of The American Theatre Organ Society and I would like to know if the Esquire ever had a "Mighty Wurlitzer". It had it on tape before the show, I remember, and the revolving colour wheel light on the drawn curtain. The esquire was pure high decco and radiated the Urbane character of Our little prairie Metropolis We lovingly know as Enid.....Jan Bryant
Hi Jan, thanks for the great memories! We'll try to get an answer for you.
Wow ... what movie didn't I see there?
Where was it located at?
The building is still there. It is on 200 block, West Randolph (south side of the street) when you look at picture the alley to the left of the building is between the Esquire bldg and Jackson Jewelers.
Is this the same Esquire as the one on Randolph or is this an earlier Esquire located somewhere else on the square?
Esquire Theater, 217 W Randolph
(see newer bldg photo: http://www.enidbuzz.com/downtownenidvintage.htm)
Built in 1969, to replace an earlier 1,147 seat Esquire Theater, which burnt down in March 1969. In 1987 the Esquire Theater was housed in a dark red corner brick building. "Esquire" was spelled out with black letters on large individual white squares attached to the top front of the building.
Under the lettering was a typical pointed marquee and an overhang sheltering the entrance.

I forgot to mention: Sodom and Gomorrah playing in this building was a 1962 film. Also if you notice on the newer bldg I referenced in the photo section, that theater marquee said closed and directed people to the cinema twin out on Garriott which has closed and been remodeled.
