So What If There's A Razor Blade In My Apple!
Halloween has gotten a bad rap over the years. It has been made out to be a night to worship the devil and a night when psychotic killers slide razor blades into apples. So what if there's a razor blade in my apple! Back in my trick-or-treating days that would have been considered a challenge. Who could eat the razor blade laden apple without getting cut. We'd have made a game out of it. Come on folks, it's mostly urban legend and less about the devil than about kids getting to enjoy a night of collecting FREE candy in clothing you'd never let them wear to school on any other day. Let's let the kids enjoy the tradition like we did when we were young. I remember walking block after block in Enid, Oklahoma, stepping over cracked sidewalks and running up a big flight of stairs just so I could cross a creaky, old wooden porch for a single orange or black wrapped piece of taffy. I remember people jumping out at me and my heart racing a million miles an hour. Those were the houses you kept firmly planted in your mind so you could return to the next year and be frightened all over again. Trick-or-Treating in your own neighborhoods used to be so much fun. Seeing a block or two with every porch light on brought instant sugar shock to your system and you had to run way ahead of your parents so you didn't miss out on a full size Snicker Bar or caramel popcorn ball. You knew the old coot handing you a Tootsie Roll because you had knocked on his door the weekend before and ran for the bushes before he came outside. He knew you were the kid that had pushed his doorbell but all was forgiven for this one night because it was a time to speak to your neighbors and a time to let kids enjoy their youth. I remember my best buddy and I building a haunted maze in his garage on west Broadway every Halloween. We spent weeks building it, taping it and filling it full of plastic rats, smooshy eyeballs and dangling things. That's what made Halloween great. Watching the terrorized kids run for their lives was something to behold. It was our tradition and it's a time I'll never forget. Let's not lose the traditions of Halloween and spend our entire evening away from our neighborhoods. Spend some time downtown, at the mall or at your church. But then hurry home and bring a smile to the little old lady down the street that bought five bags of candy just so she could see a cute little ladybug come to her door and say, Trick-or-Treat!

Scare on the Square
Scare on the Square will again be hitting downtown Enid this year. The annual event will be held Halloween night Oct. 31.
Tammy Wilson along with a small group of volunteers created Scare on the Square in 2002 as a way of bringing back traditional Halloween fun for all of Enid. Children and adults are invited to visit the downtown Square to receive candy, participate in Halloween costume contests, carve pumpkins and enter floats in the parade around the Square.
Organizers are on the lookout for businesses or organizations that would like to set up booths and hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters. Booths are free as long as you bring candy to hand out to the crowd. It's a great way to drum up some free exposure plus you get to bring smiles to the kids. Booths are open to anyone and you are allowed to sell merchandise and goodies if you would like.
Everyone is also invited to enter a float in the parade. See how creative you can be and get busy on your float today!
To reserve a booth, donate money or candy or volunteer you should call Tammy at (580) 402-6732 or e-mail scareonthe square@hotmail.com.
A Life Well Lived

It was just a few short months ago that family and friends gathered to honor one of Enid's finest friends. Ruth Hedges Ipsen was in town for the Phillips reunion and was thoroughly surprised as her three living children coordinated a birthday party honoring her and those that she had effected during her years in Enid. It was wonderful getting to see Ruth and the family members that had spent so many years living in the Knox Mansion on west Broadway. There were slide shows, pictures, a tour of the house and stories of the late Thayne and Michael Hedges. We all had a great time and thank Craig, Carroll and Brendan for allowing us to see Ruth as we remembered her so many years ago. She was young at heart, kind and full of life. We'll miss her. Ruth Carroll Hedges Ipsen passed away Friday morning in California with her three surviving children by her side. She'll indeed be missed but we can all be happy remembering that she touched so many lives and made us all better people by just knowing her.

Silent Witness
The YWCA will honor those individuals who were killed as a result of domestic violence by hosting a traveling state exhibit titled “Silent Witness Project” on Saturday at the Oakwood Mall. The exhibit features more than 200 life-sized red silhouettes of men, women and children ranging in age from 3 months to 77 years. Its a powerful display because each silhouette represents someone who was once someones child, sibling, neighbor or friend. Our hope is that people viewing the display will realize that we are all affected by domestic violence because each victim’s pain should send a rippling affect across our community, said Kayte Anton, community education and prevention specialist at the YWCA. The exhibit is traveling across Oklahoma during the month of October to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault maintains the exhibit and coordinates its display across the state. Along with a YWCA information table, officers from the Enid Police Department will also be on hand to provide free fingerprinting for children for a parents safety kit. “Our police department is committed to providing our community with the resources necessary to protect citizens in times of emergency, and we are very thankful for their continued service to our organization and its mission,” Anton said. The display will be featured in Oakwood Mall’s center court from 10am to 8pm. EPD will providing fingerprinting kits from 11am to 2pm. For more information, contact Anton at (580) 234-7581 or kanton@ywcaenid.com.

Defend Yourself!!
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Enid YWCA will hold a self-defense class on Saturday from 10 am to noon in the Virginia Groendyke Conference room, located on the first floor. The class is open to anyone age 12 and older and will be taught by Andrea Watkins of the Oklahoma Kenwa Kai School of Karate. The class will cover basic non-physical self-defense, weak areas of the body, basic kicks, body weapons, and an opportunity for students to practice physical self-defense techniques. “Participating in a self-defense class is not just about learning how to use physical defense tactics in a harmful situation, but also about gaining confidence in your ability to take care of yourself,” said Kayte Anton, community education and prevention specialist at the YWCA. Cost to attend is $10 per person or $5 if class participants donate a priority item from the Crisis Center Current Needs List. Priority items for the Crisis Center include pillows, pillow cases, towels, diapers and pull-ups in all sizes, plus-size women’s clothing, winter clothing for women and children, pajamas, bathrobes and cleaning supplies. Registrations must be received by Thursday. Space in the class is limited and tuition must be paid to reserve a student’s spot in the class. Registration forms are available at the YWCA, located at 525 S. Quincy. For more information, please call Anton at (580) 234-7581.
Geronimo!
Geronimo! That's the name of the once famous automobile built right here in Enid, Oklahoma. Although Geronimo Motors is long gone there is still at least one Geronimo automobile around today. It now resides at George's Antique Auto Museum. Auto museum owner, George McCamey, owns the car. This is a photo of the Geronimo carrying members of the Enid High class of 1957. The Geronimo Motor Co. was organized at Enid in 1916 by Will C. Allen. Located on a five-acre tract at the intersection of Cleveland and Oklahoma Streets, the Geronimo Company produced more than 1,000 cars, plus a number of tractors and trailers, before the plant was destroyed by fire in 1920. The Geronimo came in four-cylinder or six-cylinder and the colors blue, black or red. The Four was the biggest seller and sold for $895. The Geronimo Six sold for $1,295. Geronimo dealerships were established in at least four states as production began to grow in the third and fourth years of operation. Around this time the plant employed 125 workmen and was producing a Geronimo every 24 hours. The Geronimo was a good, reliable car and might have become a huge seller had it not been for fire. In August, 1920, shortly after building its one-thousandth automobile, a fire broke out in the motor plant. Before firefighters could get to the fire the plant was totally engulfed. The destruction was total and plant was never rebuilt.
