Happy Labor Day Weekend!!

This weekend is the unofficial end of summer and a three day weekend for most folks. Labor Day is Monday, September 3rd.

Labor Day is always the first Monday in September, Labor Day was the idea of Peter J. Maguire, a labor union leader who in 1882 proposed a celebration honoring the American worker. At his suggestion, 10,000 workers held a parade in Union Square, New York City, and followed it with political speeches, fireworks, and a picnic. The date chosen was simply "convenient," according to Maguire, because it was midway between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. Although the day's focus on organized labor has diminished over the years, the legal holiday still marks the end of summer and the traditional time for children to return to school.

Be safe and have a fun weekend!!

P.S. Look around the stores, this could also be considered the official start to the Christmas Season!!

An Enid Institution Not Gone Yet!!

Fat & Skinnies will re-open soon!

Fat & Skinnies has not left Enid forever!! One of the most popular restaurants in Enid history will soon open in its present location under a new owner. The menu and 33 year Enid traditions will remain the same, with a few added items.

Here's the lowdown from Jeremy Caffey. "I would like to thank everyone for their patronage to the store as well for your encouragement and support over the past 2 years. This has been an amazing experience with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank You." Jeremy Caffey - Former F&S owner.

We look forward to the re-opening and will post more information as we get it.

A Heads Up

Look up Tuesday morning and you'll catch a complete lunar eclipse. The passing of the moon through the Earth's shadow in space will be visible in North and South America, particularly in the West, if skies are clear. Enid's view should be fantastic.

The eclipse will begin just before 4 a.m. CDT, when the moon first enters the lighter area of the earth's shadow. In about an hour, there will be a full eclipse, with the moon in the darkest part of the shadow. The total eclipse ends around 7:22 a.m CDT.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the sun and moon, casting a shadow across the moon's surface. The moon should appear to slowly turn shades of orange and red.

Oklahoma should get about a 90-minute show.

An acoustic history unfolds - Acoustic Grey is complete.

Post-production is now complete on the Screaming Butterfly Productions music video project Acoustic Grey, an acoustic history of an indie artist.

On November 8th, 2006 Grey, Jason Harbour, and Mikey Harbour assembled in a dimly lit room at Db Studios in Enid, OK to record an acoustic history of Grey, an indie rock artist whose 2002 music video collection won Best Music Video at the 2003 Bare Bones Film Festival. In the next four hours, they would record 15 songs. "The songs range from me playing and singing on my own to just Jason and I playing together, to Jason, Mikey, and I playing together, "says Grey.

The songs featured in Acoustic Grey span from the early years of Faded Colours to Words & Music, Grey's 2006 release, described as a mix of "gospel backings, lush arrangements with an all American sound," by P.D. Stanley of the UK indie magazine, The Plastic Ashtray.

D. Lang (Editor, Liquid Wind, The Hebrew Project) took the 1,500 mile journey from San Francisco to Enid to document the occasion in a 72 minute film for Screaming Butterfly Productions."The idea was to create a video that would show my songs in their infant stages," says Grey.

Grey teamed up with Dave Skinner, of the group 3 Legged Monkey, to record, mix, and master the music at Db Studios. Lang, who has previously featured the musician in her projects, spent the next several months perfecting the videos, and releasing individual videos to YouTube.com, the most popular of which is "Story Book Love," from Grey's 2000 release, Colours. The video project also features audio commentary by Grey, explaining the history behind the featured songs. The audio commentary was recorded at Grey Havens Studios.

Listen to Grey explaining how the project itself came about:

Enid Musician Holds CD Release Party

As Oklahoma's international fiddling ambassador and member of the successful band Horseshoe Road, Kyle Dillingham is a busy person. However, in between gigs, the
well-rounded musician has embraced a new cause: orphans in Togo, Africa. On TUESDAY, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m., Dillingham will blend his love for music with this philanthropic passion as he holds a release party for his new solo CD, "Behind Closed Eyes" at Kamp's, 1210 N.W. 25th in Oklahoma City

Admission to the show is $5.00 per person and proceeds will go to Edmond-based 4-Him Ministries for the purpose of supporting an orphanage in Togo. The orphanage currently houses 77 children, many
of whom have lost parents to disease.

"These children are an inspiration to me," Kyle said, "They have faced incredible tragedies throughout their young lives, but are still able to achieve such wonderful things. I will never forget their courage and strength."

The event will feature songs from "Behind Closed Eyes," which is a wide-ranging collection of original songs composed and recorded over the last two years. Two of the album's songs, "Ubon Eyes" and "Train to Kuba," were created during Dillingham's recent Centennial International Tour with Horseshoe Road to Thailand and Japan. 50% of the evening's CD sales will also go to the orphanage.

For more information about "Behind Closed Eyes," and the Sept. 4 concert, please contact 405-808-8804 or log on to www.kyle-web.com.

The Hottest PGA Ever!!

If you haven't heard, Oklahoma hosted the 89th PGA Championship this last weekend and officially became the record holder of the hottest major on record. Tulsa was the host city as Tiger Woods continued his dominance in the world of golf.

A few members of the Enid Buzz staff sacrificed their weekend to attend the PGA tournament so that they could report back to the citizens of Enid. If you've never been to a major golf tournament it is quite a spectacle to behold.

The first thing you learn about a golf tournament is that a bunch of folks attend. There's no seating limit so the crowds can grow pretty large. The second thing you'll notice is that it's a marathon sporting event. It doesn't last for two hours and it doesn't last for four hours. It lasts for over ten hours!! And that's ten hours for four days!!

Our staff members quickly learned that there were no phones and no cameras allowed at the tournament. That made it a little tricky trying to gather and report news back to you our loyal followers. But they weren't about to let you down! Our staff was able to acquire several bootleg photographs (below) of the key players at key times during the tournament.

We hope you enjoy the photos and remember the sacrifice they went through, especially the heat, to bring you Buzz coverage of the PGA. Click on a photo for a larger view.

Summertime In Enid

The grass is turning brown, the wind has slowed to a breeze, the temperatures are nearing 100 degrees and the locusts are filling the air with such a loud noise that it almost drowns out the planes flying overhead. What does this all mean? We are in full summer mode in Enid.

With temps nearing 100 degrees it was nice to see this thunderstorm almost reach Enid this morning. Unfortunately it continued to build south and then moved east.

There's nothing much better than thinking back to summers past in Enid, Oklahoma. There was the splashing at Champlin Pool, the train whistle at Meadowlake Park, getting cold drinks at Somewhere, A&W and Sonic. Remember getting double dip scoops at 31 Flavors on Maine? What about catching tadpoles while trudging through boggy creek?

I remember sliding down boxes on the hill behind Taco Bueno when it was just a field and wondering if there was going to be some hippie hanging out at the Bird Sanctuary. I also remember sneaking into the drive-ins to see the worst B-movies ever made. Speaking of movies, remember when all of the theaters were downtown? How about the huge water slide north of town?

If you're young you need to enjoy today, because these are the "good old days" you're going to miss 20 years from now!

What do you remember about summertime in Enid?

A Moment In Time

As people young and old spent time remembering their years at Phillips University, across town, another less publicized reunion was taking place. This reunion was a celebration, a remembrance and a homecoming rolled into one.

Throughout the 1960's and 70's the Hedges family occupied the McCristy-Knox Mansion at 1323 W. Broadway. Family and friends were invited back by the gracious owners, Donald and Shirley Marquardt, to enjoy a surprise 80th birthday party for Ruth Hedges Ipsen, who was in town for the Phillips reunion.

The homecoming included Ruth's
three living children, Craig (Arizona), Carroll (California) and Brendan (California). One of the two sons of the late Michael Hedges, Mischa, also attended the celebration and surprise.

The event was kicked off by the arrival of Ruth as well wishers lined the huge porch and sang happy birthday. Attending the event were many of Enid's most well known citizens that have over the years been connected to the Hedges family in one way or another.

One special attendee was Enid's own Louisa McCune-Elmore, Oklahoma Today's Editor-in Chief. She had just put together an amazing profile on Michael Hedges for the July/August issue of Oklahoma Today. Be sure and find a copy, it is amazing to think that such a great talent was from Enid, Oklahoma.

The highlight of the celebration was touring the house and seeing the grand job
Donald and Shirley Marquardt have done with the mansion. And no tour of the Hedges Mansion would be complete without a trip to the third floor play area where as kids, teenagers and young adults we were given the privilege of signing the circular wall.

It had been over 30 years since I had signed my name multiple times on the now famous wall. We were allowed to spend time reading the wall and I took as many photos as I could of the names of friends I have not seen since. Fortunately over the years, no owner has yet covered the names of the dozens and dozens of Enid residents that spent time at the Hedges home.

The mid-seventies was my coming of age period and seeing the Hedges family, the Mansion and the wall brought back fond memories and reminded me of why I loved growing up in Enid, Oklahoma.

These are a few pictures of the third floor wall. Many of the signatures have started to fade a bit but many look as good today as the day they were written.

If you have photos of the wall or party please send them in. Email here.

The Bridge is Open!

The fallen bridge on West Randolph has officially been opened. Traffic can now flow down Randolph and across the bridge west of Waller Junior High.

The bridge collapsed in March after a firetruck, exceeding the weight limit, crossed over the bridge. The new bridge has been built to accommodate four lanes of traffic if West Randolph is ever widened.

No More Taxes!! Shop Till You Drop.

Well... no more taxes on the purchases of clothing and shoes during this weekend. But! That's a whole bunch better than a sharp stick in the eye!

Today is the first day of a new weekend sales tax holiday in Oklahoma. This year, Oklahoma’s sales tax holiday will last through Sunday.

Now is the perfect time to get out and buy clothes and shoes for back-to-school and also a great time to pick up a new pair of dress shoes for yourself. Texas will be having its sales tax holiday two weeks from now so there is no need to rush down there to save money.

The sales tax holiday applies to the purchase of clothing and shoes that retail at less than $100 per item. There is no limit on the overall bill. Athletic wear will not be a part of the tax holiday.
