Got Some Extra Pennies?
Currently Leonardo’s is asking children to collect pennies for Leonardo’s in preparation of Pennies for Leonardo’s Day on August 2, which honors the first day the penny was released into circulation. “All money collected by children will be added to our scholarship fund to help provide classes and memberships to families who could not otherwise afford to visit the museum. Often our fundraisers are organized by adults so this is a great way to get kids involved in the fundraising effort,” said Kayte Anton, marketing coordinator at Leonardo’s. Containers are available for check-out at the museum, and must be returned on August 2. All children collecting pennies for Leonardo’s will receive a treat from the Leonardo’s Lunchbox. For more information about upcoming events at Leonardo’s, please call 233-2787 or visit www.leonardos.org.

Enid on Craigslist?
Have you ever used Craigslist at craigslist.com? It's one of the most popular websites on the Internet today and is basically an online classified ad site. Craigslist gets so much traffic that you can find or sell just about anything. The classifieds are broken down into towns. You have the most success for your ads by advertising on the list in the city that is nearest to you. Guess what? Enid is not on Craigslist! Stillwater and Lawton were just added along with Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Shouldn't Enid be listed? It would be a great resource for Enid online and would help people become more familiar with Enid. Help us get Enid listed!! I have started a thread on their forum asking them to add Enid. The more people that comment or add to the thread, the better chance we have of getting Enid added. What do you think? Are we big enough to make Craigslist or we going to continue to let Stillwater blow our doors off as they continue to grow and we sit quietly by and listen to the crickets chirp? Help get us listed here!!

Photos around town
This is a photo of the renovated building at 317 N. Grand. It is now home to the Boy Scouts of America. I remember as a little tyke taking acting lessons in this building. Thom Whitaker and several others taught acting, dance and possibly singing. There was a small stage on the first floor.
Does anyone remember what was originally in this building?
Enid Kidnapping Making World News
Well... ummm... okay...? Let's see. It's like this. Two Enid girls aged 10 and 12 broke into a home and stole a one year old child. They removed the child from it's mother and took it to another location where anything could have happened. A ransom note was left telling the mother, “If you want to see your son again then you won’t call police and report him missing and you will leave $200,000 on the sofa tonight and we will return your son back safe.” The note was signed “the kidnappers.”
Then the Enid paper reported this morning that the father of one of the girls said this, “Why prosecute two girls who didn’t know no better?” “There’s a lot of kids doing the same thing. They’re getting away with it. It’s not right.”
Lots of kids doing the same thing!!!?? They're getting away with it!!?? Have I missed the sudden rash of 10 year old kidnappers that are getting rich doing this very thing?
Okay, so now we know where the problem started. These girls obviously need professional help. Let's hope the story goes away soon and Enid can make the world news in a much more positive manner.
The Fireworks Will Go On and On!
Never fear! Not only are the fireworks going to be exploding over Meadowlake Park tonight but they will also be exploding over David Allen Memorial Ballpark! You get to choose! Take the family out for a FANtastic night of American Legion baseball at Enid's own, very beautiful, David Allen Memorial Ballpark. Tonight will end the annual Fourth of July American Legion baseball tournament. Advance Foods will be providing a BBQ dinner for $6. After the last game of the tournament there will be a wonderful fireworks display which is expected to start around 9:30 or 10:00 depending on the length of the game.
Or take the family out for a night on a blanket at Meadowlake Park. The entire 4th of July show will happen tonight. The Enid Symphony Orchestra will begin its performance at 8:15 and the fireworks should begin around dusk. The symphony will present “Down Home Fourth,” which will celebrate Independence Day and Oklahoma’s Centennial. It doesn't get much better than that on a Friday night in Enid, Oklahoma. So get out and enjoy the fireworks at one place or another.
Enid Celebrates the 4th
The 4th of July celebration actually started early this year. The skies cleared and the rain stopped almost like it was planned. After weeks of rain, drizzle and flooding, Enid was able to put on it's first of two fireworks shows. Oakwood Country Club held it's BBQ dinner and fireworks display Tuesday evening. Those that saw the show can now relax on the 4th and won't have to spend a late evening preparing for work and travel on the 5th. This has also allowed many people to see two fireworks shows if they feel the need. Meadowlake will hold it's traditional fireworks display on Wednesday evening July 4th around the lake. The fireworks should begin just after dusk. Beginning at 8:30 p.m. Enid Symphony Orchestra will present “A Down Home Fourth” and will feature Enid and Oklahoma talent, including soprano Kelsey Stark and fiddler Kyle Dillingham. Leonardo’s will be having activities for kids today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the museum’s second floor at 200 E. Maple. Activities will include gunny sack races, musical chairs, apple bobbing, three-legged races, watermelon seed spitting contest, face painting and turtle races. There will be prizes available for all games. Craft activities and the Leonardo’s Space Jump will also add to the festivities. The cost is $3 for non-members and free for members. Adventure Quest may open in the afternoon if there is no rain.Happy Birthday America!!
Is Your Business Remarkable?
There are normally two times when someone tells another person about you or your business, when something goes wrong or when you encounter something remarkable. If people aren't talking about your business or service, you are most likely just average. This weekend I encountered two businesses I would like to "talk about". The first is a business sector that I have come to loathe in Enid, America. It's our movie theaters. I normally don't talk about our mall theater because it is just average. There's nothing special about it and usually there is no reason to talk about it. This weekend there was a reason to talk about it. My family and I decided to make Saturday a movie day and planned out a course of action. We looked online at the movies and times and mapped out our plan. Our plan went into action as we darted to the mall for lunch. We had a full 45 minutes to eat before the movie was to begin. Luckily I decided to purchase tickets as I entered the mall and before we ate. It was fortunate because the times on the Dickinson website were completely wrong. We now had 20 minutes to eat, get popcorn and find a seat. I quickly paid for my tickets and went to shovel my food down so that I could try to get a good seat. As I ate it occurred to me that I might have been overcharged. On the way back in I asked about kids three and under and was told they were free. The cashier had not asked me the ages of the kids and charged me full kid price. I received a refund. This left 5 minutes to rush into the theater to grab seats while my wife grabbed the popcorn. It was then that I heard even more "good news". The theater was out of popcorn!!! It was the first show of the day! The people around me could not believe a movie theater had no popcorn. I couldn't either. There was no sorry, no certificate for free popcorn next time, nothing. My family sat down disappointed there was no popcorn and we began to watch the irritating commercials. After the blur continued through the second commercial my wife went up front to ask them to focus the picture. Once it was focused the picture split where the bottom of the movie was on top and the top of the movie was on bottom. This continued until another person in our row went up front to have it corrected. After that things went fairly smoothly and to the theaters credit, somehow there was a full batch of popcorn ready as we left the theater. Why is Enid's movie theater like this? Because they can be. They have no competition and they don't care. They hire employees that don't care. They are truly unremarkable. On the other hand, I also experienced a business that I think is remarkable. My lawn care engineer Mark Miller spent his Sunday cutting my lawn due to weather delays. He didn't have to come on Sunday. He didn't come because he wanted money, he left without even getting paid. He did it because he believes in great customer service. His lawn care business is remarkable and something I would talk about. The other day the city left two trash cans full of monkey grass because the cans were heavy. Mark and his crew hauled them off for me, no extra charge. If the grass hasn't grown much, Mark cuts me a deal. His guys always clean up and they do a great job. Is your business remarkable? Are people talking about it? What are they saying?
