Let's Spin the Enid Rumor Mill

Rumors, rumors, rumors. Let's explore some rumors going around town. Are these rumors true? If they were, would they be rumors? Is this just tabloid blogism? Could be. Should we be spreading these rumors? Probably not. Are we going to anyway? Yep...
Target Stores. Well, it's back again! It's being rumored again that Target will be bringing a store to Enid. What have you heard? Will it be built out by Wal Mart? Will another large retail chain suck the life out of the mom and pop stores clinging to life in Enid? Only time will tell.
Hollister. Is the hip, surfer clothing store coming to a mall near you? Rumor has it that Hollister may be riding a wave right into Enid. Any truth to this one? Will Enid support a store that sells t-shirts for $25?? Who knows.
City of Furniture. Were the owners of City of Furniture forced out so the bank could build a downtown hotel? Is there more to the story than we know?? Deep Throat where are you??
The City Fathers. It's been said again and again that the City Fathers are keeping good paying jobs out of Enid. Why? So they won't have to pay higher wages. Did the City Fathers build Enid just far enough away from I-35 so the latest Ethanol plant would go to Blackwell? We ought to round the whole bunch of them up and kick them out of town! Wait! Then we'd lose all those low paying jobs they make us apply for. Drat!
Salt Plain Vials. The vials found at Salt Plains may be mustard gas. Could this be a government cover up? Could those vials be full of alien blood that the government is trying to keep secret? Why weren't the vials brought to a testing lab in Enid or Oklahoma City? Hummm? Stick this one in the X-file.
Does anyone have the facts to back up any of these rumors? Comments?? More rumors??

Enid History: Did you know...
In Oklahoma every bank obeyed the edict-save one, the First National Bank of Enid. H. H. Champlin declared his bank was chartered as a national institution and would not close. He stated Governor Murray had no authority over it. Within its vaults was enough money to pay its depositors. The people needed their money and he was determined they should get it.
For three days the exasperated Governor endeavored to persuade the First National Bank of Enid to close its doors but the adamant bankers refused and continued to pay out money to all depositors requesting it. On March 4th, the Governor of Oklahoma called out the militia and a squad of soldiers forcibly closed and locked the bank's doors. Time magazine in describing the incident declared it was the only occasion in the history of American Banking in which a bank was closed by the armed forces.

Enid Bridge Update

The debris from the Randolph bridge collapse has been removed and now everyone is waiting. Traffic has become a big headache and the city is trying to keep commuters from using residential streets to get around the mess.
The loss of the Randolph bridge has been declared an emergency by the city commission. There will be an attempt to have a replacement bridge built by the start of school in the fall. In order to speed up the process the commissioners have waived the normal bidding process on the project. The emergency declaration will save the city time on taking bids but will still allow the city a right to reject bids if they are higher than estimated.
Estimates on fixing the bridge have been priced at $250,000 for a two-lane bridge and $1 million to $1.5 million for a four-lane bridge. Construction on the bridge could take about 120 days.
In other bridge news, a review of city bridges found only six structures in the city capable of supporting its heaviest firefighting equipment. The city has started a structural evaluation of about 76 bridges in Enid and fire officials have asked the city to post weight limits on all bridges, regardless of their capacity.

PETA Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Elephant?

PETA, the sometimes controversial and many times, over the edge organization has it's sights set on Enid, Oklahoma. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 1.6 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.
PETA sent a letter to Enid Mayor Ernie Currier and the City Council urging the city to enact legislation that would ban the use of bullhooks, electric prods, and other devices which they believe are commonly used to inflict pain on elephants. PETA's request comes in light of Carson & Barnes Circus' scheduled April 21-22 visit to Enid.
PETA points out that similar legislation is already pending in Chicago and has requested to meet with Mayor Currier and the City Council to discuss making this weekend's Carson & Barnes performances the last time that these instruments are used against elephants in Enid.
PETA is well known for having famous women pose nude for ads against fur. The campaigns show naked women with captions saying "I'd rather go naked than wear fur."This poster shows intellectual icon Tommy Lee posing for a PETA ad. Man, do I hope that is not a leather skin hat he's wearing.
Although the care and concern for animals is a noble cause, PETA has taken this concern a bit far and would like to force you to eat nothing but beans and greens; and wear nothing but cotton, rayon, and rubber. They want to ban hunting, fishing, zoos, rodeos, and circuses. Some want to permanently end Kosher slaughter. They would like to do away with all pets and they even want to outlaw the use of animals in the search for cures for AIDS, Parkinson's Disease, and cancer. And a growing number take the law into their own hands, crossing the line from peaceful protest to violent crime.
Will PETA succeed in Enid? Who knows. While we're waiting to see we might as well buy some popcorn, find our seats and get ready for the show!!
Tickets are available now for Carson & Barnes Circus that will be April 21-22 at Oakwood Mall. Show times are 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. April 21 and 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. April 22.
The Enid Noon AMBUCS is hosting this show, with proceeds benefiting Enid youth. Denny Price Family YMCA’s Back-a-Youth program, Boy Scouts of America and Hedges Regional Speech & Hearing Center will all receive funds from this event.
The elephants mentioned above will be erecting the circus tent at 10 a.m. April 21 on the mall’s north parking lot.
Tickets are $6 for children up to 11 and $12 for adults. They are available at Jumbo Foods locations, David Burrows Allstate Insurance, Rose Rock Bank, Vance Air Force Base and Oakwood Mall.

Taxes not due today!!
With April 15, the usual deadline, falling on a Sunday, the returns would have been due Monday. Under federal law, tax filing and payment deadlines are extended to the next business day when they fall on weekends or legal holidays.
Under a recently enacted law, April 16 is Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, marking the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's 1862 signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing the approximately 3,100 slaves held in the District of Columbia.
A federal law enacted decades ago requires holidays observed in the District of Columbia to have impact nationwide on tax issues.
Internal Revenue Service officials had said they became aware of the District of Columbia's new holiday resulting in the extension of the tax filing deadline too late for the information to be included on most forms and publications for this year's taxes. The IRS announced the revised deadline on Jan. 24.
So what does that mean to you? You get to wait until Tuesday to start filling out your forms!!! But be sure and get them to the post office before they close, I don't think they are staying late these days to help get those midnight postmarks.

Scribner's Gallery & Studio open

Shane and Sara Scribner have opened their art gallery in downtown Enid at 127 S. Independence. The gallery will showcase local and Oklahoma artists along with their own work. The artwork presented in their gallery is the original creation of fresh new artists whose work is represented through paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings, jewelry, book arts and mixed media.
The work spans from the classical nude, still life, landscape and portrait to modern realism. Touching on abstract, mixed media, sculpture and modern photography.
In addition to the gallery, they plan to teach art and possibly sell custom jewelry. The building is not only an art gallery but also the couple's home.
After investigating a number of locations in the United States, including Tulsa, the Scribner's decided on Enid as their home. They came to Enid to visit relatives and ended up liking it here more than Tulsa.
The building has 1,500 square feet of gallery space with a total of 8,000 square feet throughout. The first Friday of every month, they will feature a new artist with a wine and cheese night at the gallery.
Stop by and enjoy a new art experience! Visit their website.

Someone You Should Know - Carlotta Lennox
I was recently contacted by a new client wanting a cartoon logo for a business they have going in Dallas. The client began talking about a pet supply vending machine that I had just read about in the latest issue of Entrepreneur Magazine! Come to find out, not only was this that person but she was also from Enid!!I recently met with Enid's own Carlotta Lennox to talk about her new business and heard the story of how it came about.
It was on one sunny afternoon in July that Carlotta rolled by a park on a pair of rollerblades and noticed that the dogs looked tired and hungry while their owners were drinking bottled water and eating snacks. It was then that she realized how she could give the day back to the dogs. Seven years later, the first Hey Buddy pet vending machine was established in Bark Park Central, an off-leash dog park in Dallas.
Lennox, an Enid High graduate, stocked the machine with dog treats, tennis balls, dog shirts, dog glasses--basically everything a dog might need for a walk in the park. And with its shingled roof and slated facade, the doghouse-inspired vending machine was hard to miss--which meant pets and their owners weren't the only ones begging Lennox for more. It's a really great branding mechanism for corporations looking for an extra niche for items they want to sell outside their stores and many large companies have already contacted Carlotta about climbing on board.
Carlotta is also in a great position due to Hey Buddy's unique patent, which gives her company exclusive rights to distribute pet products in vending machines across the U.S., which will allow Carlotta to take full advantage of the niche market she's created.
Hey Buddy is already in negotiations with major corporations interested in branding the machines for dog parks throughout the U.S., and sales are expected to reach $100,000 this year. I'll keep you updated on Carlotta's success.

Happy Easter to All!

First Presbyterian Church - Enid
Easter egg hunts abound all around town and we look forward to the arrival of the Easter Bunny. Have you ever wondered how the Easter Bunny became a part of such a religious holiday? Here's a bit of the Top Bunnies history:
Since its conception as a holy celebration in the second century, Easter has had its non-religious side. Easter was originally a pagan festival. The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with a festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre.
When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they attempted to convert them to Christianity. The missionaries cleverly decided to spread their religious message slowly throughout the populations by allowing them to continue to celebrate pagan feasts, but to do so in a Christian manner. As it happened, the pagan festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of year as the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. It made sense, therefore, to alter the festival itself, to make it a Christian celebration as converts were slowly won over. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling, Easter.

Store closing leaves many questions
The couple relocated a few of their stores to the new location and opened in July under the name City of Furniture.
Today, Dale and Leslie are no longer in control of the business that they built in Enid. Although their stores continue to operate, they are now being run by the creditors that forced them out. The stores most likely will be headed for liquidation and eventual closing.
Dale and Leslie brought a passion for entrepreneurship to Enid and it is sad to see a couple that devoted themselves to helping Enid left in the position that they're in. Many questions are left as to why the couple was forced into bankruptcy court and we hope to have a few answers in the future.
