Is Your Business Remarkable?
There are normally two times when someone tells another person about you or your business, when something goes wrong or when you encounter something remarkable. If people aren't talking about your business or service, you are most likely just average.
This weekend I encountered two businesses I would like to "talk about". The first is a business sector that I have come to loathe in Enid, America. It's our movie theaters. I normally don't talk about our mall theater because it is just average. There's nothing special about it and usually there is no reason to talk about it.
This weekend there was a reason to talk about it. My family and I decided to make Saturday a movie day and planned out a course of action. We looked online at the movies and times and mapped out our plan. Our plan went into action as we darted to the mall for lunch. We had a full 45 minutes to eat before the movie was to begin. Luckily I decided to purchase tickets as I entered the mall and before we ate. It was fortunate because the times on the Dickinson website were completely wrong. We now had 20 minutes to eat, get popcorn and find a seat.
I quickly paid for my tickets and went to shovel my food down so that I could try to get a good seat. As I ate it occurred to me that I might have been overcharged. On the way back in I asked about kids three and under and was told they were free. The cashier had not asked me the ages of the kids and charged me full kid price. I received a refund. This left 5 minutes to rush into the theater to grab seats while my wife grabbed the popcorn.
It was then that I heard even more "good news". The theater was out of popcorn!!! It was the first show of the day! The people around me could not believe a movie theater had no popcorn. I couldn't either. There was no sorry, no certificate for free popcorn next time, nothing. My family sat down disappointed there was no popcorn and we began to watch the irritating commercials. After the blur continued through the second commercial my wife went up front to ask them to focus the picture. Once it was focused the picture split where the bottom of the movie was on top and the top of the movie was on bottom. This continued until another person in our row went up front to have it corrected.
After that things went fairly smoothly and to the theaters credit, somehow there was a full batch of popcorn ready as we left the theater. Why is Enid's movie theater like this? Because they can be. They have no competition and they don't care. They hire employees that don't care. They are truly unremarkable.
On the other hand, I also experienced a business that I think is remarkable. My lawn care engineer Mark Miller spent his Sunday cutting my lawn due to weather delays. He didn't have to come on Sunday. He didn't come because he wanted money, he left without even getting paid. He did it because he believes in great customer service. His lawn care business is remarkable and something I would talk about.
The other day the city left two trash cans full of monkey grass because the cans were heavy. Mark and his crew hauled them off for me, no extra charge. If the grass hasn't grown much, Mark cuts me a deal. His guys always clean up and they do a great job.

I want to mention a company that is special. I recently thought I needed an electrician. After calling a couple, one couldn't come for 3 weeks and one didn't answer the phone, I called Thilsted Electric. After I explained what was wrong the man said he thought I needed OG&E rather than him. He said if I did need an electrician call him back and he'd be right over. Sure enough it was an OG&E problem and cost me nothing. I thought Thilsted was special because he could have come out, charged me and told me to call OG&E but he didn't. I am saying Thilsted Electric is someone to call next time you need an electrician.
While we have many great photographers in Enid, I wanted to make a comment about an individual who runs her own photography business out of her home. I recently had her take pictures of my children based on a recommendation from a friend she did a wedding for, and I have to say - I was very impressed! Not only are her prices GREAT but she is patient, very creative and totally put my kids at ease. She has a full time job and just does this on the side for fun and her passion for it really shows. I highly recommend her to anyone!! www.kayteskreations.com
As I sat here and read the most recent blog entry, I was trying to figure out what great businesses I have encountered here in Enid. My family moved here a few months ago (Air Force) and so far we've had fairly pleasant business interactions. I could list names of courteous experiences here in Enid and usually I am the ultimate optimist...
Although, this time I, too have a 'bone to pick' with the [only] movie theatre as well.
My husband, a friend and I recently had a (un)delightful movie-going experience that I would like to share...
First, we checked out times online (movies.com) for "Knocked Up" on a Saturday night and arrived promptly 20 min. before the movie was to begin (7:00pm). We stood in line, purchased our (military discounted) tickets, bought candy & a drink and proceeded to make our way to Theater 4. As we approached the entrance, we quickly noticed that there are NO LIGHTS leading you thru the turn-filled hallway, so we began navigating via cellphone lights.
After a few sharp turns, a few run-ins with the carpeted (and probably bacteria-infested) wall, we saw a glimmer of light which was the still commercials/trivia game, so we entered the very dim theater & quickly found seats.
At about 7:35pm (35 min AFTER the alleged showtime), someone finally went to the front and asked what was going on. Shortly after her return, a staff-person came in the theater and informed us that THEY "FORGOT TO TURN IT ON!!" BUT NOT TO WORRY, WE WEREN'T THE ONLY THEATER THEY FORGOT ABOUT! Isn't that the main objective of a movie theater? To play movies!?!...I digress..
We patiently sat through all of the previews, and about 3-4 scenes into the Feature Film, when someone finally grew annoyed with the screen: I suppose it was set on wide screen because the movie was EXCEEDING the actual screen on the top & bottom...so, any closeup shots were about mid-eye to neck from our point of view.
Then, after 4-5 tries of adjusting the zoom, it became VERY BLURRY...to the point where we couldn't even LOOK at the screen much less try to keep up, since there was NO pause. This lasted for about 10 minutes along with multiple no-sound times that lasted anywhere from 1-5 minutes throughout the entire film.
Then...as we near the last 30 min of the movie...I'm talking the peak of the movie...what the entire movie was based on: the end of being 'knocked up'...it turned to SLOW MOTION!Sound, picture and all!!
By the time it was finally fixed, I realize I didn't pay that much attention to the movie because I am so flabergasted that everything that COULD go wrong at the movie theater ACTUALLY WENT WRONG!!!.
Apparently someone reached their wit's end and complained during the slow motion bit & informed us (yes the movie-goer, not someone from the staff) to tell the front desk & we'd receive a refund. As we walked out, we went directly to the counter & they handed all 3 of us RE-ADMITTANCE tickets. So, not only did we not get our cash back, in order for us to make up for that terrible experience, we'll just have to sit through another one.
I've been to $1.50 theaters that were more tech-savvy, more friendly, more courteous, more--just plain better and for A LOT less than there jacked-up ticket prices (I won't get started on that!).
I will NOT return to Enid's Movie Theater, I'll probably end up giving my freebie ticket to the trash--I'd hate for anyone to waste their time like we did. There's better, more stimulating and less frustrating things to do here...golfing, biking, go-karts, etc. etc. Get out and enjoy Enid...visit OTHER local businesses (I'm a supporter of local business...thank you enidbuzz.com for keeping me informed on events, etc.)...but please do not go to the movie theater.
That's my 2 cents!
Have you all written to Dickinson Theatre's corporate office to let them know these stories? If enough people complained, I think they would take notice since the theatre has their name. I hear a lot of complaining about things, but when I ask if anyone has taken action on it, I get few affirmative answers. I suggest everyone writing the corporate office and letting them know how crummy things are here. Even if one person does not get a response, if a group of people complain, the noise is louder and surely they will listen.
Dear All Movie Goers,
As a young assistant manager at the theatre i want to extent a personal apology for all the displeasures you all have experenced at our theatre. I want to address some of the issue mentioned above. First the popcorn, yes it is pretty ridiculious that we ran out of popcorn. I don't know what really happen, but our General Manager said that we were shorted on our order form the warehouse. He then told me that we were waiting to get approval from our corporate office to purchase popcorn from local vendors. Why it took til after the first round to get the popcorn is beyond me. I apologize for the lack of urgenancy. For the issues with the lights not working in the theatres, we have addressed the situation and are waiting for the parts to get in so we can fix the relays that help turn those on automatically. I personally promise that i will watch closer for the safety of our customers. Again i apologize. Now I will explain the re-admit policy. My general manager was told by home office to offer re-admits to customers instead of full refunds. However, we are told to make sure that our customers stay our customers and that they leave happy every time. I am sorry we are failing to fulfill our promise to all of you! If you have any questions or further comments please addressed the corporate office or me personally. My cell is 580-402-4514. I really would like to work with our customers to make the changes that are being addressed. I want to thank you all for your comments and I hope to hear from all of you again.
Notice: My name is Shawn Pearce, an Assistant Manager, my opinons are my own and are not shared by Dickinson Oakwood 8 nor the Dickinson Corporation.
As a past employee of the theatre I have worked under the current General Manager and would like to inform you that he is completely useless. The issues mentioned above should have been taken care of along with other problems you may or may not of experienced. All the problems are taken care of when he feels like it.The assistant managers are the only ones that do anything. Shawn Pearce along with the former assistant manager Andrew Marshall have done all they can to keep the theatre going.I was also an employee under the former General Manager Andy Somma. Andy and his old team of Wallace White and Erica Pearce actually ran the theatre right.Currently though since the GM is useless the business is being ran by teenagers barely out of high school or just in college. So please try to be understanding and be patient because they are trying. Having not worked there since January and visited the theatre as a customer I to have experienced the problems but knowing why the problems are occuring gives me a better understanding. So please give my friends a break they are doing their best with what they are given.
Thanks to everyone for your input, especially to Shawn Pearce for speaking out. We will continue to go to the Dickinson Theaters and understand that not every experience is going to be perfect.
I personally did not intend for this to be just a slap at the movie theater. We've had bad experiences at many places in town as well as good. My thought was to nudge business owners into thinking about how to make their businesses remarkable. I know I need to find that magic ingredient in my own business.
If you know of any other remarkable businesses in town and what makes them remarkable please let us know.
