Enid Celebrates the 4th
The 4th of July celebration actually started early this year. The skies cleared and the rain stopped almost like it was planned. After weeks of rain, drizzle and flooding, Enid was able to put on it's first of two fireworks shows.Oakwood Country Club held it's BBQ dinner and fireworks display Tuesday evening. Those that saw the show can now relax on the 4th and won't have to spend a late evening preparing for work and travel on the 5th. This has also allowed many people to see two fireworks shows if they feel the need.
Meadowlake will hold it's traditional fireworks display on Wednesday evening July 4th around the lake. The fireworks should begin just after dusk. Beginning at 8:30 p.m. Enid Symphony Orchestra will present “A Down Home Fourth” and will feature Enid and Oklahoma talent, including soprano Kelsey Stark and fiddler Kyle Dillingham.
Leonardo’s will be having activities for kids today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the museum’s second floor at 200 E. Maple. Activities will include gunny sack races, musical chairs, apple bobbing, three-legged races, watermelon seed spitting contest, face painting and turtle races. There will be prizes available for all games. Craft activities and the Leonardo’s Space Jump will also add to the festivities. The cost is $3 for non-members and free for members. Adventure Quest may open in the afternoon if there is no rain.
Happy Birthday America!!

O my goodness. 4th of July in Enid Oklahoma! I just found you on the internet. My name is Cary, and my brother and I grew up on a farm 20 miles east of Enid. I've lived in Texas 30 years, and finding your blog melted my heart for the first town that was the "big town" to me and my brother. The old Carnegie Library was our home on Saturdays when our folks would let us off farm chores. Two little burrhead boys could check out six books each week. We'd stay all day, and eat a sack lunch on the steps, it was just across from the Ford House. The new Enid library was our first taste of the good life, modern chairs, even painting and sculpture. 4-H Share the Fun contests, dress revue, and the magic of snowy Christmas shopping on the square shaped our lives. Thank you Enid - I'm a grandfather, and travelled far from Oklahoma, but I think about you all the time. Thanks for good people, and Coldiron's and Kress, the magic of the square, the sporting goods store, Chenowith and Green, and S&Q Clothiers where Same Wilenzik treated a farm boy like a big shot. You gave me a vision for a life beyond the farm, although it was a great life. I've made and spent a lot of money, I've raised a family, and I think of Enid often. Thanks 4-H, The County Fair with the giant gold magical water faucet, the VFW, drive in movies, phillips university, and every little cafe and shop we visited. Thanks to every old farmer, and Tri-State participant, and preacher, and school teacher, thank you-thank you all, I have to stop before I tear up. God bless you, Cary
