Happy Easter to All!

First Presbyterian Church - Enid
Happy Easter to all! We hope everyone has a place to celebrate and gets to spend time with family and friends. The churches will be full this weekend as those "twice a year" church attendees break out their best duds and head for the pews.
Easter egg hunts abound all around town and we look forward to the arrival of the Easter Bunny. Have you ever wondered how the Easter Bunny became a part of such a religious holiday? Here's a bit of the Top Bunnies history:
Since its conception as a holy celebration in the second century, Easter has had its non-religious side. Easter was originally a pagan festival. The ancient Saxons celebrated the return of spring with a festival commemorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre.
When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they attempted to convert them to Christianity. The missionaries cleverly decided to spread their religious message slowly throughout the populations by allowing them to continue to celebrate pagan feasts, but to do so in a Christian manner. As it happened, the pagan festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of year as the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. It made sense, therefore, to alter the festival itself, to make it a Christian celebration as converts were slowly won over. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling, Easter.

Being a Christian is an everyday event for me: kindness to strangers (and friends!), love one another, grace and goodness. I don't need to wait for Sunday or a Christian 'holiday' for what is good and right to prevail. Happy Easter.
