WHY: “The Huggable Heroes program reflects our commitment to empowering our young Guests to make a difference,” said Build-A-Bear Workshop Founder and Chief Executive Bear Maxine Clark. “Every day we see Guests come to our stores and put so much heart and love into making a bear for a family member, a friend or someone in need. We know that this concept of giving extends well beyond into community involvement. This program finds those wonderful, caring kids and gives them the recognition they deserve.”

Background
In 2004, Build-A-Bear Workshop® launched the Huggable Heroes® program, each year searching for and recognizing young people making a difference in their communities. Former Huggable Heroes have been honored for their work with such causes as Cystic Fibrosis, cancer and supporting troops in Iraq. Huggable Heroes are kids with kindness and compassion for making the world a better place.
From December 26, 2006 through February 14, 2007, Build-A-Bear Workshop accepted nominations for Huggable Heroes. Kids were nominated for their volunteer and community service efforts. Nominations have been narrowed down to a field of 119 semi-finalists. In April, 30 finalists will be named. The finalists will again be narrowed down to determine the 10 Huggable Heroes.
