Phillips Drug Closes

Indian Hills won't be the same without Phillips Drug. Phillips has closed the doors after serving Enid for several decades in the Indian Hills Shopping Center. Enid not only loses another family owned business but also the neighborhood fountain which served lunch to so many Enid residents.

We won't soon forget the quaint little shop that supplied our neighborhood with candy, greeting cards and unique gifts. We'll miss sitting at the counter ordering lunch from our bar stool and also the friendly service that always came when shopping with the Phillips family.

Thanks for the memories from one of the neighborhood kids, we'll miss you!

Enid has two remaining family owned pharmacies - Evans Drug and Scheffe Prescription Shoppes. These pharmacies would welcome any former Phillips customers and can easily fill their prescriptions. They also both deliver.

Changes at Birthwise

Below is a letter from Cindi Bigheart about the changes going on at Birthwise...

It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that I will no longer be providing obstetrician care as of December 1, 2006. Along with many factors, primarily the cost of malpractice insurance, continuing to offer midwifery services including the birth center is financially prohibiting.

In regards to your obstetrician care, we will continue to provide those services until your are established with a provider your choice. My attending physician, Dr. David Parker practices here at Women's Health & Wellness and does deliveries at both St. Mary's Regional and Integris Bass Baptist hospital's. Dr. Parker is accepting anyone from my practice, as I am sure our other local obstetrician would. We will provide your records to you or the provider you have selected upon request.

I apologize for short notice but please understand this has been a VERY difficult decision. My promise-I will continue to be a advocate for birthing families, rights of moms & babes, and a healthy birth for YOU. It is with sincere sadness I write this letter.

Yours truly,

Cindi Bigheart ARNP,CNM,MSM

Women's Health & Wellness and BirthWise will still be a huge support for moms & babes in this community. We will still offer childbirth education, breastfeeding support groups, used maternity wear, and our maternity shop. We will also continue our website to post important information and keep the forum going!!

And in today's weather...

Windy, windy and windy.

Otherwise a nice Fall day in Enid, America.

Karen Dalton's In My Own Time Reissued

You are most likely wondering why I would post this information. Well, Karen Dalton just so happens to be an Enid native. The picture above shows her playing with Bob Dylan, he's the one in the hat.

In the early 60's, Dalton was a regular performer at the pass-the-hat clubs in New York's Greenwich Village, where she'd gig with the likes of Dino Valenti, Fred Neil, and Bob Dylan. She was often compared to Billie Holiday. But, perhaps because she interpreted other people's songs ("When a Man Loves a Woman", "Katie Cruel") and was a Native American woman, she's been largely forgotten by the public.

However, a reissue of her music might set critics straight. The ten tracks were originally recorded by Harvey Brooks (who played with Dylan on Highway 61 Revisited), and masterminded by Michael Lang (who, like, totally signed a young Billy Joel and co-founded Woodstock). Dalton, who sings and plays the twelve-string guitar and banjo, was backed by dudes from the Gaslight and the Cock and Bull (two Greenwich Village clubs), and also Robbie Robertson's the Band.

A remastered edition of Karen Dalton's 1971 lost classic In My Own Time, was due out on November 7 on CD and vinyl.

Happy Veterans Day - Saturday

Although many people will be celebrating Veterans Day today with a day off from work, the true celebration will take place on November 11, Veterans Day.

With the approval of legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

How to Teach Kids About Veterans Day

Here are a few ideas, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs and EducationWorld.com:

1. Teach your children about the history of Veterans Day by having them create a time line of events leading to the observance of the holiday.

2. Have your kids write short articles or essays of how veterans are honored around the world. And if you know any veterans locally, propose that your kids interview them about what it's like to serve in the U.S. military.

3. Research how American veterans were treated after they returned from various military conflicts, ranging from the French and Indian War to the Persian Gulf War. Ask your children to compare and contrast their findings. Also compare and contrast how women and minorities who served in those conflicts were treated.

4. Have children draw a picture of Veterans Day, and what this holiday means to them. Military children can draw a picture of a parent who is currently deployed, or a relative who has served.

5. Make a thank you card for veterans. Children can give this card to veterans that they know or to veterans who are listed through the local VA medical facility.

6. Ask your children's teacher to invite veterans to their classroom. Veterans can discuss what it's like to serve in the military, and how important it is to observe this holiday.

7. Have your kids make a colorful and fun poster with the names and pictures of relatives who are veterans.

Happy Birthday to the Marines!!
Today is the 231st anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps.
