McCristy-Knox-Hedges Mansion
The mansion located at 1323 W. Broadway in Enid, Oklahoma is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has housed many famous Enid families including the McCristy's, the Knox family and the Hedges family. My friends and I hung out in the mansion when it was owned by the Hedges family. Michael, Craig, Carol and Brendan had many friends running through the house most hours of the day. I especially remember the third floor where we were allowed to cut loose. There were games, music and a huge train set upstairs. There was also a round wall that circled the spiral staircase. We were all allowed to write and draw on the wall. You could find many a signature on that wall, much like your old high school year book.
Other things I remember about the mansion were it's seemingly 100 foot Christmas trees every year, that shot up the center of the staircase. There was the huge table in the dining room that had a butler bell on it. (It really didn't work) I remember playing with Michael Hedges electric guitar that he had taken apart and left strung out in the basement.
If you were ever doused with a snowball on west Broadway it most likely came from us as we launched the white stuff from the second floor balcony. I have many memories of the old mansion and I'm glad to see that it is being well lived in even today.
